When my 2 and half year old grandson comes over to visit, first thing he says "Nonno, lets watch Banana!!"; thanks Matt and crew!! You guys are great!! Especially Trevor; that man is talented!!
Trevor is pulling out every circuit we are not using- don’t forget that check engine light.
Everyone: "Matt, you can save most of that re-work if you plan it out carefully!"
Matt: "I can re-work WAY faster than I can plan"
You all are using the Hotrodder's Law: For every modification made, there are three 'other' modifications needed to make the initial modification work.
Rudy: Whos Bob?
Trevor: Your Uncle
Perfect
Trevor is a good sport and a great electrician.
Trevor is good at all things I think. Oscar worthy :)
@@svein1754 yes, good sense of humor and quick-witted
Yes and happy birthday Trevor
And he's always doing the worst jobs without complaining. Even comes in to fix stuff on his day off. Seriously, this man needs a raise. And i'm not talking about the wrecker...
Trevor has a lot of patience to re-wire that entire harness. Props!!
This is how it really goes though when doing heavy modifications and waiting for parts. All those fantasy land shows on TV about cars have weeks to order and get everything ready, when real life is like this. Thanks!
Dude! Build a radiator shroud! They are INSANELY effective!
Nah let's blame the electric fans instead! And use 100 year old tech!
Mad props to Trevor dealing with that wiring harness. That talks lots of patients.
Hands up for Ed needing to film his gold mining trips👏

"cutting new grass like this" never heard that term before now. But it makes complete sense. Always look forward to your videos. Love watching your crew. Keep up the good work. Longtime fan.
That washer bottle relocation is pretty neat
That killed me. About the engine clearing the hood. "That answered about 200 question" 😅 love ur videos keep them coming.
Typically a radiator needs a fan cowl in order to pull air through it at slow speeds. Without one the fan will pull air from all directions instead of concentrating it through the radiator. I've seen lots of people not have a cowl then wonder why they're overheating.
It's just like your air filter hanging in the engine bay sucking up hot ambient engine bay air vs any kind of ram or fresh air intake
Similar concept
Fan shrouds have a lot of science to go with them on placement and clearances.
They even help with gas mileage because the fan isn't churning up a bunch of engine bay air.
It’s gotta have a cowl / shroud, otherwise it’ll create wind, but won’t pull it through the rads…. JME…👍🏻🇬🇧🇷🇴
Trevor should get a raise just for dealing with all the wiring through his project ;) Happy belated birthday Trevor! Nice whip
The "Tommy Boy" reference is solid gold!
The relocating of the washer fluid container from under the hood to the back and it happened to fit absolutely perfect was just hilarious lmao.
On top of being able to do a backflip , Trevor is a great sport , man what a guy !! Great vid guys 👍👍
Happy birthday Trevor! Enjoyed the video, even though you all were all over the map. I know you will magically pull it all together in the end. Thanks for posting.👍👍👍👍👍
Hey Trevor, I think the reason they ran the extra ground wire in the loom was for something called “star grounding”, or “star point grounding”.
Grounds can be weird things. Modifying KC135 in the Air Force we had 3 ground points to the frame within 1 inch of each other under the copilots side panel. 1 was DC, 1 was AC and 1 was shield. If you got the wrong wire on the wrong post you'd get all sorts of strange indications.
@@msgtdan60 Then that is a crappy design to begin with.
@@rebelyell1580 it was a carefully engineered design to avoid ground loop currents by having distances be exact etc.
I work in pro audio, and good studio and theatre electrical systems have very complex grounding designs keeping wire lengths identical, etc, on the high voltage side as well as the audio side, all the lighting, etc.
Any time you have a difference in potential you have problems, and the Jeep having star grounding is only because they had issues and added it, they wouldn't waste the work and wire if they could avoid it lol
It’s a miracle that anyone can make sense of those wire bundles.
I was just gonna say that shock mount was way overkill. Then I remembered,.. I did the same thing and welded in a 3x3 125 wall square tube to the frame and floor. It actually does help a ton for flex. That should have been there from factory to be honest. On top of that I welded 130 thick SS plate all in the back cause I wasn't sure at the time. So now it's a 3/4 ton XJ 😆
Awe, I love Max and Lady! Happy Birthday Trevor!
When you see them the next time, remind them of always wearing safety goggles, especially lying under the van welding.

The sad thing is a mechanical fan will work just fine, has done for 100 years. The reasons to use electric include fuel savings, space savings, and the option for continuing cooling after engine shutdown.

seems like a 1950's 4x4 power wagon ambulance would be the ticket to a great recovery vehicle. Get big enough tires, and motor, all that room in the back for every recovery tool you would need.
As a support vehicle it might be a great choice. Although my opinion is the humvee would be more cost effective. But if they have to go on the tight trails those light weight Cherokees and even the moorvair are really ideally a good fit.
Love it when Matt references funny movies (like Tommy Boy, "Here"), just that 1 of many layers to him. Good natured, loves his music, movies, family, and helping. So glad I found this channel last year...
And then pulls some Rob VanWinkle freestylle. 😅This guy, Im tellin ya.....

Glad to see Ed’s return and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TREVOR...!!!
Trevor's a genius. Give the man a bench to do wiring harnesses on.
It's great that you have Trevor to figure out all that wiring!
Trevors Beard Is just the best, I have been growing mine for many years and have nothing on his.
When we had a Cherokee I tried desperately to find a detailed workshop manual. All I could get was the manual for the gasoline model electronic system, useless om=n my diesel model. So I admire your ability to decypher the wiring system!

Just a general comment: I would prowl the beaches of Cape Cod Mass in my stock 1989 3.0 Toyota Pick up and rescue full size pickups buried to the frame..they often said "your going to pull me out with that!" The extra ground wire is necessary. It was likely there to prevent ground loops and get to the ground star point.
Ehhh, I think we're going to find out in the next episode just how necessary it is lmao.
@@MattsOffRoadRecovery as someone familiar with ground loop issues, if you ever start having your computer do wierd stuff, try putting that wire back in... Lol
Let's just say that Jeep didn't spend that work and money on millions of Jeeps without a need, they like making profit instead of giving away copper!
You may get lucky, you are reducing the amount of electronics in vehicle, but generally it's better to leave the 2 oz in and trust the electrical engineers... ;)

I’d run two electric fans before I’d set up a misaligned clutch fan. One fan on front blowing through and one fan to the rear doing draw. On separate circuits so if one goes…
With a little rpm a mechanical fan cant be touched by an electrical fan set up!
@@Rccrdawgs not if the clutch fan is misaligned with no shroud
@@Rccrdawgs I like the reliability of a mechanical fan. But I doubt you’re going to get 3800 CFM out of a single clutch fan. There’s single electric fans that can do that and more. And you can add 2 of them, unlike a clutch fan setup.
@@Rccrdawgs in the desert heat? lol
If you want to prove what works in heat, look at front wheel drive Cadillac, the most crammed engine compartment with the most accessories and designed to run AC all day long in the 120 Arizona heat, they use Electric Fans just fine. That will save water pump bearings, will remove the fear of the fan eating the radiator for lunch, and in certain situations, like fording a river or in a mess of sand in the fan, you can turn off the electric fan momentarily to get through whatever it is, the clutch fan will just drown your engine in a mess. And the clutch fan when fully engaged takes atleast 10hp away from what you could have at the wheels, makes the engine work harder as outside temps rise.
Trevor's age is metric. That's why the 99. However, I can't seem to find a conversion formula to find his actual age. He might have two of these a year.

Hope you had an amazing birthday Trevor! Great job with the wiring mess.
I’m looking forward to the 5hr video of Trevor removing all that Plastidip 😢🥴
Hi Lizzy,
I had the same question about the fitment of the valve cover and just went back a few episodes to where the original engine was in the Banana. It looked the same, so I knew the new engine would fit.
Two big electric fans with shrowd on the front of the radiator solves the cooling, the engine-driven fan coming forward into the radiator, the engine-driven fan hitting the hood, and trying to make a shrowd for the engine-driven fan. Yes, I know you are skeptical about electrical fans, but they work in high horsepower applications, not just Jeeps.
Banks makes amazingly good parts, mostly for diesels, but for other stuff too.
I would have thought that two limit straps, tied to the top shot mounts would have been lighter and simpler.
I look forward to Sunday videos! 😎 Glad Ed is back to keep y’all in line! 😂 And Happy Birthday Trevor..

I'm with u on that. I no it was all in fun but I would not be happy but a least it's only a VW and that hood scoop might make the value actually go up.
I agree.
Why not run a electric water pump and fan? You could have a switch inside to keep them running with the engine off to help cool it down when its really hot out and you are working it really hard. Or to the ecu but im sure you are running the stock one.
I doubt the electric water pump motor could stand the heat.
This is what I would do. I remember seeing this with the LS drag racing crowd. Apparently it's good for a few hp as well since it isn't driven off the crank. And I'm sure there are warranties in case it fails prematurely.
Because then when you're alternator fails you're stuck
Hope you had a great birthday Trevor. Thanks for sharing your new hot rod with us and being an awesome regular on the channel. Someone has to keep this crew in check!

Happy Belated Birthday to Trevor. Mad Props to him for his wiring skills.
mechanical fans are great, but a good SPAL electric fan does wonders. (I have tried other brands and they didn't work as well as the SPAL.)
(I would leave the mechanical if possible on most setups, but when it is that offset, I go completely electric. On setups with a mechanical fan I may add in an aux electric fan)
It adds additional electrical draw, but an electric water pump and electric fans lets you run the fans and pump at high at low engine RPM.
It also allows you to have them continue to run when you shut the car off until the car comes down to a setpoint temp.
I use the davies craig EMP pump and controller, SPAL fans, and build my own radiators using Bell core's for all of my agricultural and street stuff.
End's up being a little pricey, but the result is something that holds their temp no matter how hard I push or what the outside temp is.
He still remembers vanilla ice lyrics 😂🤣

0:48 So what you're saying is that "No the Valve cover _doesn't_ clear" unless you install solid motor mounts. It'll rock over under load and _could_ still contact the hood.
@@MattsOffRoadRecovery Wow! That's cool! Nicely done.

The clearances aren't that great but at least theres a hlaf inch between everything lmao. Love it man.

You make it really interesting and worst of all make it like it’s easy. Lots of skill, common sense and as always, enjoyable for people like me with near zero practical skills
ceramic coating or just wrap the headers :) keep the enginebay a little cooler
• What made you decide to use a mechanical fan, as opposed to running an electric (or *dual* electric) fan(s)?
• Plasti-Dip does not remove easily, if only a thin coat is applied.
EDIT: I found (the same day I posted this original comment) that in a previous video, the decision was made to replace two of the three existing electric fans with a clutch fan, which solved the overheating problems.
It simply seemed to me that having to get a hub machined to adapt the clutch fan to the water pump, combined with having to fabricate a fan shroud - was much more difficult than simply installing a single 3000 CFM electric fan, or 2-3 smaller 1700 CFM electric fans... especially when space, difficulty and time to return to service is a major factor.
I anticipate tears in this story.
plasti-dip is a nightmare
I agree with the plastic dip, thick coats come right off! One coat is a nightmare
From what I've heard, the trick to removing thin plastidip is to add more to it so it'll all peel off easily, haven't tried it personally though
All true. Don't put it on oxidized paint. It won't let go from mechanical grip. One thing you can try is purple degreaser and a giant soft sponge. I went from a completely plasti-dipped car, (Rust-o-leum version, brilliant blue,) to spray paint. I still have one piece that's plasti-dip. It's a perfect match to Bahama blue metallic from dupli-color. Maybe you could feel a difference. Horizontal surfaces are the worst with spray paint.
Stop apologizing and enjoy that excellent work you all are doing. All the best
Matt is a lucky welder. Noone welding alot or typically much at all are brave enough to not wear gloves. Once u get a burn all the way through the middle of a finger nail, it's a mind changing ordeal.
They are expensive but why not high flow electric fans for the radiator?
If it clears by a finger width, it probably wont clear when you're in drive giving it the beans
Not trying to sound corrective or rude, just meant motor mount play when you're stuck. Good to know itll be okay though
Organised chaos, but great at it. It always seems to come together. Happy belated birthday Trevor🎂
NEVER SEIZE.. warms my heart!!
Hope you send (sent?) that header and even possibly the first section of exhaust off for ceramic coating inside and out. I found with long-tube headers it made a world of difference for underhood temps here in the Phoenix area.
Or fiberglass
Dunno if you need to think about this, but there may be a problem with that plastic fan and uneven air flow. I know there is an issue on OTR trucks that block off a portion of the radiator. The part of the fan that is working moving air tends to flex. If it happens over the entire fan the forces balance out, Just something to watch.
Not only that but with age, the plastic fan will fatigue crack. A whole blade or portion of one will break off and eat the radiator. Happened on a Peterbuilt i was driving. Shook like crazy (out of balance) and coolant fell out on ground pretty quick. The boss had a fleet of them and after a few of them had the same failure they started replacing the old fans with new ones on the rest of the fleet. Seems like the failures started happening around 7-9 hundred thousand miles.
Matts fan is definitely going to flex the bottom blades foreward when they grab a bite of air. Then at the top where the fan is higher than the radiator the blades will relax. The constant bending will eventually break the fan. It might take longer than the Bannana lasts but eventually it will break
Trevors car looks amazing !! Happy birthday Trevor !
Brown dog motor mounts would be a better bet, with more mount points to the engine block. In my XJ, I run a Taurus electric fan, with a BMW engine temp sensor, a Volvo relay to turn it on and off, and a golf cart relay for power delivery. It does work very nicely, especially since it allows the engine to get up to operating temperature quickly, but a good fan clutch is probably a lot simpler if you can make everything fit.
Why didn't you go for an eletrical fan setup so when it's idling the fans can ramp up and not depend on the engine Reving
They also come basically shrouded... So no need to worry about the fan coming through the hood or the grill on a kinetic pull
That's good thinking right there.
