Haha I’m listening to all the gear like ‘yep, have that, yup’. Definitely gives me some peace of mind about my set up lol. Not identical but have a lot of similar stuff
Thanks for sharing that. For my battery pack, I always disconnect any USB cable(s) to avoid the plug point(s) getting bent while stowed away. Take the elastic found on bundles of broccoli and leave it wrapped on your battery pack. When not charging, I leave the cable(s) strapped to the outside of my battery pack. Reduces risk of a damaged battery pack and USB cables. We depend on this ability to recharge our devices. Cheers.
I’m glad you mentioned at the end that you mix and match between your comfort load out and your light weight load out. I don’t think I ever carry the exact same load on consecutive trips. It always depends on location, length, mileage weather and hiking partners.
In fact, I think I am going to make a video about the gear that falls in between the light weight and full comfort load outs. Looking at some of the variations based on the variables I mentioned above. I’ll give you a shout out for inspiring the thought if you’re ok with that.
If you take out the back pad and cut off unnecessary straps, the Zerk 40 is only 20oz! That’s crazy light for a pack that can carry ~20-25 lb comfortably. It’s my go-to now for my ultralight setup

You are so good at this stuff, Justin.....even with stubby arms!! Really awesome set up my friend. I can't wait to do one of these when I finally get my pack and hammock soon. I'm hoping for the 9 pound range too, maybe even less so I can one up you! 😀 Seriously great camera presence here. I really enjoy what I call the "Canadian duo" (you and Jesse). Great channels!
Oh man..... 10K!!!!!!! Congratulations Justin ! 9lbs is impressive! Hilltop packs! Love the Lanshan 1 Pro! An awesome tent! Bit by bit I am coming around to the idea of buying a pillow..... Congrats again on 10K Great breakdown of your pack.
Nice video, I have an enlightened equipment quilt as well. They are hydrobolic duck down. I’ve unfortunately gotten completely wet. Nice thing about EE is even wet retains 80% loft. Not as comfortable but I did not freeze. Keep up the good work.
Great gear choices. Its like a kit I wouldve put together myself. Im still fine tuning our 2 person luxury kit but in the future Id love to put together a 1 person ultralight kit pretty much exactly like this.

Thanks for the comment friar. I agree that the 10lbs number for ultralight is arbitrary. For me, I look at ultralight more as an approach than a quantifiable number.
Oh woww!!! Damn I really loved this video!! You did a great job showing it all, and the fact you are so considerate you put things for us in grams was so nice! I am not an ultra lighter, and I know that you are not too! So it was kinda awesome seeing how you do manage to go down to ultra light!! Something was missing though! Did you not say you had a CHAIR AND SLIPPERS!!? Where are they? Are they included in the 4 kg weight?
Malzy Outdoors I tried it, but my torso just felt too short for it(17 inches). I just couldn’t cinch the shoulder straps enough. Wish they made it in smaller sizes! I really, really wanted to keep it.
Would be cool if you made a once-click wishlist to purchase products that share some website to include as well. Well done on this list, nice to compare with others as others have said, alternative options list would be cool too.
I rock the zerk 40 too! Love that pack! Super easy to use, pack. Alot of really useful features! I only have about 40 miles on mine but so far so good. My only change would be the two roll top fastex buckles are a little small. Kinda wish they were bigger. Same with the side compression buckles. They should have been bigger or easier to use. Other than that. Great pack! Nice ul kit man! Hike on!!
I had the same question! After liking #2 a lot, I’m probably going to buy a #1 to save ~16 oz: 1) Nemo Hornet 2/Tigerwall UL2 - Semi-freestanding. Tight fit, but can hold two large mummy sleeping pads (25 taper 20 in wide). The UL2 is a little bigger than the Hornet 2 but a little heavier. Similar durability and water proofness 2) Tigerwall UL3 - Semi-freestanding. A true two-person tent, easily large enough for two rectangular pads (25 in wide) and gear in tent 3) Nemo Dragonfly 2 - Lightest 2P freestanding on the market. A little bigger than the UL2, can hold two rectangular large pads. More durable than Hornet 2 and UL2. Only a few oz lighter than UL3 4) Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 - Freestanding. Slightly heavier than the Nemo Dragonfly and not as big. Can only hold two large mummy sleeping pads
If you're looking for the best bang for your buck, The Lanshan 2 pro has treated me very well. If you're looking for lightweight but with space, then the Tigerwall UL3 would be an option. I also really like the Marmot Tungsten UL 2P and 3P tents as good all around options.
WoW!! 9lbs Curious about the pack liner. I use compacter bag right now and wondering if you can hear the nylofume crinkling as you walk... Have you noticed a difference between a regular garbage bag and a nylofume liner in regards to noise?
I don’t have enough money to buy a camping/hiking backpack all I have are some school backpacks and a small duffel bag but what I’m taking camping is a tent, sleeping bag, light and food how can I fit that all in should I use the duffel bag or the backpack
Hi Justin ! Thank you so much for the time you dedicate to these videos, it's very helpful :) regarding the stove+750ml combo, have you experienced any issue with the stove "bending" under the filled toaks weight or are you able to fill it entirely without risking one of the arms to break ? I currently have a furno 360 stove which is ok but I'm looking for a lighter one. Cheers!
I did have one of my arms bend when I had a full 1.8L pot on it. The issue was that I was blasting the stove for 15min with a strong wind blowing all the heat onto one arm. Since then, I don't blast the stove as much and shelter the stove more from wind and haven't had any problems. As a stove used purely for boiling water, it does very well!
Some electronics like charger missing and according to lighterpack all clothes counted as worn weight..I think you at least taking backup sock underwear and sleeping layers so they should be counted as base weight. I think your baseweight will be around 6kg if calculated correctly.
Have you used the CF poles to setup the LanShan2? i just wonder how stable it is compared to using the trekking poles. Thanks keep up the great videos. if you notice i am commenting a lot - i am binging your content lol. be well.
Love the channel. What type of pants and shirt are those? They both look really comfortable and a lot more stylish than what I end up wearing on the trail!
Enjoyed the video. You mentioned the OPSAK (spelling?). How do those work? Do you keep your food in the OPSAK in the tent with you? With the OPSAK you don't have to store your food in a bear locker or do a bear hang?
I haven't really noticed it having any more condensation than other tents. When I wake up with a bunch of condensation in it, every other tent around is dealing with it too. I do pitch it with a 126cm pole which lifts the front up quite a bit and allows for some good ventilation.
Hey awesome video, really watchable! What size of dry bag do you use for your quilt? I struggle to find one that I can get my EE quilt in without a twenty minute fight packing it up 😂
I believe it is a 10L bag. Something I did, was add a snap about 3-4 inches below the top of the bag. I stuff the quilt in and then do that lower snap up, which allows me to then roll the top of the bag.
Hello Justin. Do you happen to know if they ship to the U.K.? The pack? 4kg is a very impressive weight, I would try a mirror your set up here but have a job as I’m In Blighty. Cheers my lad. All the best Andy

Even at the sire where you are that looks like US 18 (Birdwood) to leman lake its dry as hell. All the wallows are dried up past the ranger station and until you get closer to the lake there is far less water.

Dude! Congrats on 10k subs! Incredible achievement!
Thanks ,mate.. Just checked it out, and forwarded to others that shared my recent track experience. Thanks for reaching out.. Cheers.
You inspired me to weigh my Hooded Mountain Hard Wear down jacket........546g....1lb 3.3 oz !! Wow...heavy
Well done Justin. That is an awesome gear list. Great choices there. I hope to get my gear down that light someday. Crow✌️
Nice clear presentation. I've noticed that diagonal compression straps on a frameless pack are a bad idea. They cause the back of the pack to bow.
Hmm, I could see that but the foam backpacking on the Zerk prevents any noticeable barreling from what I've experienced. It's a design feature I like!
Really love your channel, one of the people who insipermed me to start mine, altough a bit different
This is awesome! I need a pack with better accessibility for water. It seriously slows you down having to stop.
