800 here and yeah he's only a few rank tiers away from me. Green, Red, and Ruler will still be roadblocks but he'll probably get through them faster than usual.
Law is an easy character in rank pushing and execution Me on the other hand is purple rank after 700hrs + with bryan only as he's difficult in rank push and execution in most big boy combos
@@frosty1162 Wait do you mean Ruler ranks or Purple ranks? I just realized I keep getting those mixed up. You probably mean Fujin and whatnot. I haven't made it beyond Revered Ruler with Kazuya. I'm barely getting used to fighting Bryans. It's taken hundreds of hours of ranked just to fight him enough to get used to that nasty low kick. I think Kazuya's problem is that he's the most iconic "protagonist" in the series (along w/ Heihachi & Jin) so his moves are easily the most predictable of the whole cast. For example his uf4,4,4,4 is almost always blocked. Its only use is as an anti air counter hit read and even then it gets shut down by almost anything. And somehow people always block the second hit even though I can't seem to do it myself. Sometimes the game lets me block low after getting hit and sometimes not.

The Gimmick Arc is tough, yeah. There's just so many moves and there is this absolutely massive wall to climb before you're able to force people to play the "real" game. I think what you said about the shift from trying to force wins with gimmicks to focusing on learning your own "real" game and having fun is critical. Perfect defense against gimmicks can only come with a HUGE number of hours, so you just have to prioritise the stuff you can master in a reasonable timeframe.
"The Gimmick Arc" is the perfect way to put it. I think every new Tekken player goes through that. It's basically a knowledge check forcing you to either quit, flounder, or actually learn the game. It's extremely satisfying once you break that wall and then the gimmick players become some of your easiest opponents bc that's all they can do.
So cool to see people giving this legacy game an honest try and acknowledging its strengths/weaknesses. Id totally like to see a KoF week cause its also a whole other world within the fg genre.
yh saw my friend get the platinum for this game and I wanted to try a fighting game after seeing a retro arcade fighting game (not sure what it was, maybe it was street fighter), honestly This made me range i tried to do like 3 moves but so far I've just been mashing buttons and learning, got to initiate in bots
@@safwanakhtar2528I would recommend to just relax take it slow and learn how to do inputs clean. Because all the other stuff will come pretty easily once you get the muscle memory of clean inputs down.
Seeing strong FG players playing tekken 7 for the first time is always a treat. It's pretty depressing to see him getting orange in a week tho 😂. As a FG novice, it took me maybe a year of playing consistently & looking up guides.
32:42 I play this shit for years and its the first time I see someone succesfully hit that and convert it into a combo. That does mad damage, lmao. Interesting video. It helped me solidify what I believe to be the best way to approach learning this game. Learn your chars stuff, find ways to break people's defense, work on whiff punishment as the basic defensive skills and lab as you see stuff.
Btw Diaphone, you ain't wrong, Tekken is a super gimmicky game due to how knowledge check based online is. There are only a rare few who actually bother with something as essential as fundamentals, especially in the online setting. My hope is that when Tekken 8 comes round with that good ass netcode (lord help us) we'll be able to react to dumb, gimmicky shit so that everyone is forced to adapt, learn, and react at higher ranks.
That redemption arc is so good. Tekken is a knowledge game and I really understand the salt where each character has their own gimmick and even a character played by multiple person can feel very different with different gimmick they use. The change is mindset is great because people that rely on gimmick will hit a wall that they can't overcome as the gimmick will stop working when playing against higher rank people.
The editing goes super hard on this, your journeys in new FGs are super entertaining and the pacing of the vid is great!! Hopefully you never run out of new interesting games to try out :')
its pretty cool how diaphone realized alot of stuff about the game on his own. That actually impressed me more than him hitting orange relatively quick. Like the tldr is that while yes, alot of gimmicks and knowledge checks exist, playing solid makes it so that those gimmicks only translate into losing rounds but not entire games. Having superior fundamentals is what actually wins you games. Its the foundation for staying consistent. For any beginners trying to get into tekken i recommend learning your 1 player game first and foremost. Movement can take a backseat but learning how to frametrap and what your while standing punishment options are has to be a priority. The second thing is learning how to get off the ground without dying. The wakeup system is complicated so please look up what your button presses actually make you do so you dont insta die the moment you get put on the floor. Good luck to everybody that got inspired to try out tekken by this banger ass video!
Facts. Gimmicks in (low rank) tekken are only good in 2 scenarios, either your opponents lacks the ability to not push buttons for a second or the character you play is a gimmick heavy character like Lei or eddy and even sometimes hwo. Gimmicks are often flow chart-y aswell so thats why patience will be like god mode when you start to see their patterns and sneak in the launch or knockdown. Once you can be more patient and watch what they do, you will blow through their shit way more consistently. Thats not to say lei and such cant be played less gimmick-y, just that low rank shenanigans are very common, because most people in low rank flow chart hard, and flow charts lose to patience. Dont be too patient though cause then your stuck in mind games and "im plus on block" territory.
i love seeing players from other games come to Tekken, thank you for documenting your learning process to approaching the mountain that is the game. lowkey motivated me to get back into the game and grind for the god ranks again. best of luck Diaphone🙏🏼
The thing about Tekken's Gimmicks is the greatest obstacle eventually becomes your greatest opportunity. It just takes a lot of fights against a character and some research but eventually you start seeing the patterns and you'll naturally adapt. It can seem daunting at first but once you get it you'll style over players who only advanced due to the gimmick and don't know how to play the real game. For instance I went from getting my ass handed to me by most Law players, to eventually consitently low countering them and causing numerous rage quits.

I can tell you must have a lot of fighting game experience, I know people who played Tekken a lot longer who still can't execute some of the things you did consistently. I mess up the DSS too sometimes. Sure, you did not reach any miraculous ranks, but given the time you put in and the progression (and continously better attack choices) I am 100% convinced you would beat me within a year (also a Law main before I quit , Fujin)
