My friends and I visited Costa Rica in '97. It was a he described it. In the main city, you could always tell the Americans as we dress like bums whereas the locals would almost always be dressed nicer. The men would be in shoes, khakis with white shirts and the women would at least where a skirt or dress. The only women who would talk to us directly would either trying to sell us something even themselves.
The atmosphere was relaxed and peaceful.

I was in Costa Rica just last week. We had a wonderful time. We stayed in Tamarindo. The people were warm and friendly and in Tamarindo, we felt safe the whole time. We stayed at the Tamarindo Diria and it was a beautiful hotel. The portion of the hotel that was across the street from the main building was like something out of a Bond film. I'd go back in a minute.

Costa Rica is a beautiful place with lots of great people. I miss living there, 9 years wasn't enough and I wanted to stay but my family needed me in the States.
Costa Rican women are women. It's kinda dumb to make generalizations because the 2 I was with were very very different from each other. Some are super traditional and some are not at all. Some are gold diggers. Stereotypes aren't fair.

So, I have visited CR several times this year and I have to disagree with you about one thing. The traffic there is horrendous. Not because of being stranded in traffic but because almost everyone there thinks they are race car drivers. In San Jose, its frightening the way people drive on their small twisting two way roads as if no one else on the road is important. The city roads are full of potholes and thereare hills everywhere. I go by taxi or uber because I would be afraid to drive my own car in that environment.

I was there for 8 months, 2 months in San Jose and 6 months in Puntarenas. While in San Jose never noticed the smell of urine all over the place, plus the continuous thunder showers probably washes it away for the most part. Low crime because of gun control. Confrontations I've read when a weapon is involved is with knives, but I never saw a confrontation the entire time there. Prositution is legal but you have to get a permit and register with the government. They don't stand out in the streets, they enter the hotels/casinos and sign in and stand around but not overbearing in terms of business. Puntarenas is a quiet town, use to be a bustling town because it was a cruise ship stop. Photos I've seen of back in the day with beaches packed. It's not that way anymore, at least back in 2018. There were times I was the only one on the beach on the shoreline a couple of miles from the downtown spots. No complaints about Costa Rica, it seems a little more laid back then Colombia based on videos. I didn't get a chance to get to Medellin, Colombia. If you stay long term in a country, you can only stay 90 days consecutively and then if you want to stay longer you have to cross the border and be out for 5 days before you can return. So, I flew to Nicaragua and Panama for my border crossings.

I had a rental house in CR back in 2008. As far as partying and night life, it's great. Once you settle in for real life, you realize that groceries are priced very high and electricity (for the A/C) is even higher. For visiting, it's great and relatively safe. Driving from the airport to the Pacific side is treacherous, as you are driving up steep mountains in the rain (it rains every day in the mountains).

A huge number of people in the West live alone or with pets. The west has poor family values. Most people live their lives individually which leads to stress, loneliness, disease and mental disorders. The west is too strict , and people get old soon and die too young.

I wouldn't move to Costa Rica because I would always feel like just a visitor. I'd be living among locals and a whole different culture with a different language and I would always feel like an outsider. Much more comfortable in Connecticut surrounded by family and people who speak English lol, I just go to Florida in the winter - much easier!

I have relatives in CR. There are very few firearms but property crime is rampant. My relatives live in what I would consider a compound, with fences, remote controlled gates, and razor wire. It's like the criminals have imprisoned the citizens. Don't go out alone at night. Actually, don't go out at night at all.
The roads absolutely suck. The address thing is real. I have to send mail addressed to "The pink stucco house 100 meters north of the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Motion, on the right side of the street". I don't dare send anything valuable by any means.
The kids left for Europe and the US and are residents of those countries. They only come back to visit.

Lots of exageration and misstatements in this video. For one thing, if you drink and drive you will end up in jail! I came to CR in the early 1980s and drove extensively throughout the country...yes, there were traffic signs and traffic signals installed...even then! ;--)

Wow... This video was laughable. Yes CR is beautiful! It's cheep. (but most expensive of the Latin countries) Seafood is great. ...hard to get a good American steak. The people are friendly. But... Get off the beaten path and you better know Spanish. Hide your wallet and get ready to be taken advantage of at any opportunity. Count your change. Everything there in the jungle can kill you... including the women. Every where you drive, is a race. Unless it's a gravel road, .. then, it's a rally race. They tailgate, honk and yell. Some intersections are void of traffic signals and any markings on the road are purely for decoration. Animals, old busses and tractors are rampant. I could go on, but you get the idea. Have fun! Oh, finding a bathroom can be a challenge.
