Excellent work, Darcy! White doesn't have to be a nightmare these days, but I really do need to get some of those ProAcryl paints. I'm using Vallejo whites and getting decent results, keeping it thin but not too thin is the key.
Thanks Max! If you'd like to give Pro Acryl a try, the following link will save you 10% 😉

@@DarcyBonoCreations Thanks, I will!
Get them. I thought I was an abject failure, then I used Bold Titanium White...
Can confirm that Pro Acryl white is the GOAT of white paints. I even use it sometimes for priming some parts or bits that have been glued later on painted models (like purity seals).
It can even be painted over black in a couple of coats without difficulty
That's so very simple but the effect is striking. And it's easy, too. Good for getting white armor to the tabletop.
Painting everything before the white is such a good tip that seems obvious after you learn it but would def not have occurred to me if you hadn't said it! Thank you for the awesome tutorial!
I absolutely love the brassy gold-ish colours you've used for the sawblade arms on the backpack!
I don't suppose you could share the recipe for those too?
I think it was just Gharaghak's Sewers (maybe with a little Wyldwood) over a bright Silver for the dark brass. And then just Skeleton Horde Contrast for the light bronze.
@@DarcyBonoCreations THank you so much!
@@DarcyBonoCreations is one of those combos how you did the aquila on his chest? Awesome white recipe btw - I'm going to use this on my Sanguinary priest
Amazing technique
Absolutely brilliant tutorial! I'm ready to bring the noise with my own biologus now
you are a life saver, this is exactly the result that i was looking for. Thank you
I just painted my best ever looking terminator helm using this technique. OMG it just looks sooo freaking good i love it
Yaaaay! Glad to hear it :) and congrats!
I wish I could comment on ur page with pictures. Ur tip of using medium, then applying wash, amazing. I was scared at first, but the result was amazing.
I already have this Biologis. And this tuto is perfect
I paint all my 40k stuff clean as well. I know it's not grimdark, but i like it. Your point of it is art was a interesting take and I hadn't considered it before.
Wow, you made this look so easy. Definitely going to try this technique. Thanks for making this video. It was super helpful!
Great video. Nice tip on the Lahmian Medium initial coat. really clean look.
Wow definitely going to try this thanks lovely painting 👍👍🏴
When you gave the ratio amounts, you got an insta sub from me. Top notch!
yeah it's really surprising how many people just say "mix these colors". I'm new. i have no idea what the ratios should be. 0.o
Keep up the great work

Nice and easy to understand tutorial. Nice tip about the mixing of the shade with the white, when correcting. Never thought of that.
You seem to be the best lady youtube miniature painter and very knowledgeable about paint and very talented. I will look forward to future videos. I love the explanations of everything . I like to paint and watch videos and it makes very nice listening so I can look up if I need to learn something but can just listen to the rest. Love that I found you
Oh wow thank you!
But I am very small potatoes compared to Louise Sugden (youtube.com/@roguehobbies) of Rogue Hobbies and Lyla Mev (youtube.com/@LylaMev).
I do really appreciate the compliment and the feedback as far as listening. I never know if I'm talking too much or over explaining 😅.
@@DarcyBonoCreations rogue hobbies more history not much painting but fun and lyla mev I personally can't stand never takes personal responsibility also I'm a semipro airbrush muralist ( I do have art sold and hanging many places but could be better )and when I watch her bad advice videos on airbrush it drives me crazy I could write a book. I have one pic on Instagram till I found out you don't own your images on social media I stopped I have enough word of mouth anyways. I've learned alot from you keep up the great work and you probably just need a little excitement in every video and you'll be huge in CZcams. Good luck
I’ve seen so many videos on painting white armor miniatures but this video demonstrates the best approach - the technique is simple and fast with surprisingly good results
That's basically the Bob Ross wet-on-wet oil technique, but on miniatures and with contrast! That's genius!
hmm this is interesting
well done, will remember for next time I paint white.
Another great video, will be using that medium technique for sure!
This is the exact channel I needed. Im finally finishing miniatures. Please do Blood Angels
Thanks! I actually have a World Eaters one to show painting red armor. A bit heretical, but should also work for the BA:

Getting into the hobby, going to start a tau sept that is going to be primarily white, and I want a brilliant white for them as well. I have taken college level painting and I was aware of the shadow accenting the color however I had forgottten that. So I really appreciated that detail.
I also am learning the flood/flow/fill method is crucial in miniatures.
Thank you for the detailed description and demonstration.
wonderful technique!! So inspiring. Fast and efficient and suuuuper good looking!
This is the best and most well-explained tutorial on white I've ever seen! Thank you!
Wow this is amazing! I don’t have any white armoured armies but I’m going to try this with my yellow and pink gang 😁 great tutorial
Looks great! I'm going to try this tomorrow.
I love this white tutorial. Thank you!
Can confirm that proacryl’s white is stunning to use 👌
This looks like a very nice alternative to the oil washes which take forever to dry. Thanks! :)
Basing material 😆
I'm waiting for my Leviathan box 'nids to arrive and and dreaming up paint schemes.
One had white carapaces but I wouldn't have known how to even get started on those. I'm gonna give this a shot! Looks great!
Great. Sorely needed tutorial, again. Great content.
Sensational as always Thanks Darcy this has just blown my mind
This looks excellent, I'm excited to try it on my 3 unpainted apothecaries and my eldar. I totally agree about the weathering thing too. Maybe it's because I started in 2nd edition, but I love my models to look clean and vibrant
Great work!!! This is my new go-to reference for a masterclass on building cold white tones with acrylics. 😮
Took you advice and used the Army Painter Mixing Balls and pulverized those pesky gigantic pigment into submission, as an added measure I mixed in roughly 50/50ish Lahmian Medium.
So far so good. My Corax White applied a lot smoother this time. after I paint all the details (As per your video) before trying out Soulblight Grey and/or Apothicary white for shading as I am looking for grey mid tones rather than cool or warm tones.
I will let you know how this turn out I will also look into PRO ACRYL.
Call me obsessed, but I like the challenge of using Citadel Paints. 😀
Great video Darcy!
Yea good advice on the wash, I'm new to contrast paints but your method really does make a good wash for white armour, I struggled to get a good wash otherwise. Personally I do a base coat in Vallejo silver grey, which by eye is pretty much white, use your wash method then highlight, as the highlight stands out just a little more for definition. Thank you for the video.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Definitely a keeper technique!!!
wow! just found this and wow! this is amazing i love this, i cant wait to try this to finally start my white scars
Outstanding video.
Brilliant. I think this is the easiest white I've seen yet, and it looks GOOD. Glad I subscribed, good video.
Thanks for the sub!❤
Hi there, just wanted to say that this video has been a game-changer with painting my marines. Thank you!
Just found your channel. Great stuff.
Failed so many times trying to paint white, going to give this a go after I have finished up my Iron Orcs, they dont tend to go for the white armor look 🙂
'This is art, you can make it look however you want' every painter should listen to this, box art is box art, paint your own thang!
The Biel-Tan guardians I've started and stripped twice are very grateful. Great vid
I LEARNED SOMETHING. :D
Thank you for the tutorial, theory, and the formula!
I'm very glad to hear it! Thanks for checking it out.
Nice. *Real* nice.
So I like your method but I was delighted with your opinion on weathering. I was chatting with a mate about it in regards to Space Marines today and I noted the following. Space Marines are elite troops which means their kit is always in stunning condition. I cited my experience in the Australian army when we were in the bush. Our weapons boots and metallics were all cleaned after dawn stand to. Never was there rust or grime on the kit and the boots had a coat of dull polish to reinforce water resistance and leather protection. So keeping the kit clean is on point. Secondly, the armour is Ceramite not metal so no rust spots, if ever it was allowed to develop in the first instance.
This is by far the best tutorial on painting white I have come across.
You're actually muh hero! As white Scars and Imperial Fists lover you've really helped ❤
Amazing. I hope I can put this technique to use!
I’m pumped to try this! I’ve been holding off on painting Comstar for my BattleTech games because I just couldn’t be bothered to gather the oil paints and all that required for the other “easy” method.
I'm actually in a constant debate with my husband (scale modeler) about Contrasts vs Oils. Honestly it feels like they do almost the exact same thing but Contrasts have a way faster drying time. They both create filters and gradients, but the only thing oils seem superior at is creating grittier streaking effects 🤔
@@DarcyBonoCreations I’ll take your word for it! If you have a recipe for a good looking black too, that’d be nice. Black and white are what I struggle with the most on my test pieces. I usually try one black mini every couple months, shrug, then just paint it navy blue or something.
I do a cold blue in this video:
czcams.com/video/JvQjhXezdic/video.html
Also do you have the Citadel Colour app. It's free and they have a whole library of color recipes in there.
Oooooh I like that, very nice!
Wow, I never thought about using lahmian medium as a "surface preparation" medium before.
This is awesome! Thank you so much!!
I can't wait to try this. this is the model I've been dragging my feet on for my Blood Angels.
Amazing tutorial 👍Thank you, I will try that on my Apothacary (and my ComStar Mechs)
Superb levels of sass within an even more superb tutorial. You deserve recognition for that.
"Superb levels of sass" may be one of my all time favorite compliments 😁 Thank you so much for that.
Great video, really well explained! I liked the inclusion of images (cloth, glacier) to show examples of shading in the real world.
Awesome video. Great tutorial
Great video
Excellent video!
I was just typing my question regarding alternatives for Pro Acryl Titanium White when you answered it at the very end. Awesome :)
all looks nice , thx for video 👊
Fantastic video, thanks 👍
Ok, I have watched SO MANY painting videos and I have literally NEVER seen anyone else do the "put a layer of lahmian medium down first to paint on a wet surface" and it's just... so brilliant. As someone who's background is in traditional art medium, I *instantly* just had my mind blown with the possibilities. Instant subscribe.
Haha glad you enjoyed it! 😄 I think it's referred to or at least similar to "wet on wet blending" if you're looking for more videos on it.
The effect of the inside of the vivispectrum is cool.
New favourite channel, thanks
Thanks Darcy :)
The gold on the apothecary is beautifull!
thanks for the tip n the recipe of the shade u made :)
Bellissimo!
Amazing !!
So that is pretty OP
Cool tutorial. 👍
Great video, thank you! Your white recipe is great but I would also love to know how you did the gold details 😊
Great tutorial!
As usual, great tutorial! for this particular color I think oil washes can be even easier if you dont mind dealing with white spirit.
This is brilliant! Thank you so much…
Amazing, thank you 🎉
Super helpful. Thanks!
Thanks for another great video. Because of you my army may finally get apothecaries! Any chance you will share the colors and technique that makes his red tabard pop so well too?
Thank you very much!
Great video!
Man i was talked out of doing white scars because everyone told me white was too hard. now i wish i saw this video first lol. Thanks for the info!
Great method! I’ve always wondered how this was accomplished.
Cool. Best top is to paint all details first. Now I just have to find a good alternative for the medium.
Have you ever used any of the panel line washes, like those from Ammo from Mig? You seem to have made your own panel line wash.
No, I rarely paint vehicles, but I think my husband (scale vehicle modeler) has some by AK Interactive. It's basically the same concept. The panel liners use white spirits or some other alcohol, right?
Soulblight Grey is also quite nice over white!
This is so helpful thank you. I’ve had a million helmets I’d been wanting to paint white sitting around before this video
Nice tutorial for contrast white armor! I kind of wish it had come sooner, but I'm committed to my nid scheme now, lol. Also, I think I know how but just in case, how did you do the glass windows on the case he's carrying?
Thank you! The glass panels were done basically the same as the following
(czcams.com/users/shortscUXJ9_2OR7M?feature=share)
BUT with a few exceptions:
1) Coat the surface with Lahmian Medium first.
2) Use Kroxigor Scales
3) Once dry, repeat the process closer to the darker parts only.
Wow. If I can actually get this to work I might actually be able to play Star Wars: Legion!
Are you kidding me? that looks so simple and practical! Absolutely going to give it a try when I get started on my White Scars. Its Epic scale but hopefully the principles are the same!
Yep, same principles but one thing to keep in mind for epic scale is that the recesses may be more shallow. That being said, use just a tiny bit of everything in the video at time, otherwise you'll just end up with a basic all over shade coat instead of a recess shade. Just use everything more sparingly is what I'm trying to say 😅
What a great method. Would it be possible to use a wash on the Lahmian medium instead of making my own mix of contrast paints?
heh, your shade is my retro Space Wolves armour colour, nice!
Dr. Bono, Perhaps you’ve done the following? I could use some pointers on shading from one color to another. I want to do Magnus the Red with a dark crimson (standard) face, neck and central chest, which then transitions, guess through purple/lavender (?), to a typical Tzeench blue for the arms and wings.
I also like mine to be clean, as Salamanders they are suposed to take care of their gear.
Saw you posting this guy for sale and followed here. Subbed
Thanks for following! 😃
