What a trip down memory lane though! Looking at the early pages you showed I was struck by the memory of actually learning how to use my digital art program specifically to make this book! I had forgotten what a struggle the new medium was at the beginning! One other thing I forgot to mention, to answer the comment about the large panel on the first page, I had really wanted that first page to be an establishing shot like the ones in the cartoon when the title card shows over one of the painted backgrounds of the locations in the show. I put a lot into the room layouts and settings, pulling screenshots of Eric Raymond's office (co-opted by Riot in the story) and Riot's apartment to put together room layouts and floorplans for the buildings that would be as accurate to what appears in the show as possible. I can still draw Eric Raymond's office from memory even now that its been about 7 or 8 years lol. The backgrounds were all color picked from the background paintings in the cartoon to try and get an 80s cartoon accurate feeling

Oh wow, that's some impressive fan dedication. I can only imagine the work that goes into a single page, but being motivated to make a whole book is something else entirely. There really is a ton of love for this franchise - it boggles my mind that there isn't more official material for it!

You are so right ! It took 2 years and many thousands of dollars as I funded everything. I paid main the artist the competitive pro artist wage at the time. Also it was super expensive to commission Stefanie Clark Eskander who is still currently working in the industry so she prepared the toy mock up in accordance to industry standards. It was a labour of love and given my love for the Stingers you could be totally sure that IDW wasn't going to do a Stingers specific story arc so someone had to! lol

@@mitzycream Oh wow, I was doing the math in my head of what it would cost to commission it all, and it's insane. I'm glad people like you are able to support these amazing artists!

Oh man someone sent me a link to this video! Thanks for reviewing this work! Some input on the process, I had showed the writer a few examples of different coloring and line qualities so we could decide what direction to go with it and she liked the softer little bit more sketchy sample I showed that was done using a mixture of pastel and chalk digital brushes. As for style, i hadnt quite gotten to the point where I could draw the on model show style very well at that point but I had wanted to draw them in a way that was both simplified enough to get the project done without getting too swamped. I was finishing my college degree, working retail, had just moved out into my first apartment, so a full color comic on top of that was a lot of work! I had wanted to be sure to give Rapture and Minx unique facial features as they can be a little same face in the cartoon, which is something thats carried through to how I draw them currently. I agreed the lettering is the biggest weakness of the book just as my own personal critique of myself. I had drawn comics before in the past but I had never lettered a book and had a lot of trouble doing the typesetting with no real background working with text. As the page count grew we had to get more script onto each of the page which did lead to crowding a lot of text at times, something that if I could redo it today I hope I could pull off better typesetting. I picked up a copy of the comic in print form myself this past year and it was the first time I had actually looked at it in many years. I had been afraid to actually open it and be overly critical of my work but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had done a pretty good job for an amateur student doing something like that for the first time. I'd definitely like to return to Jem fan comics and I've been sitting on a script for one I just havent found the time off to illustrate yet, so depending on my work schedule keep your eyes peeled for that! If I can find the time to pull it together it will be a story focused on Rapture and Regine!

Thanks for taking the time to write all that and give a peak behind the production curtain. Always fun to read! Best to you.
