In 2008, a historic event took place: The New York Philharmonic, under the baton of acclaimed conductor Lorin Maazel (1930-2014) traveled to Pyongyang, North Korea to perform a concert at East Pyongyang Grand Theatre. It was the first time since the Korean War that significant US-American cultural representatives were permitted to visit the secluded country. This event captures a historic moment in which music found itself navigating sensitive political realities, and revealed its unique power - the power to awaken human minds and to push for change by creating moments of communication, unity, and hope.
The New York Philharmonic began the concert by performing the national anthems of North Korea and the United States, followed by a program that introduced the audience to European and US-American classics (such as Richard Wagner, George Bizet or Leonard Bernstein), and created moments of symbolic meaning: After performing pieces such as Antonín Dvořák's Symphony "From the New World" and George Gershwin's "An American in Paris", the orchestra closed the concert with the famous Korean folk song "Arirang", which is beloved in both, South and North Korea.

This is one of my favorite pieces of music ever composed, it’s awesome that they performed it during the unique Pyongyang concert with the NY Philharmonic.
May L. Maazel rest in peace.

I was fortunate to have a family while growing up in the 50s that loved this piece of art. I loved it even at age six and still do to this day as I'm seventy three years old. I sit back and close my eyes and so many memories and emotions come to me as if it's surreal.

The girl on the left at 1:55 has precisely the expression of how a Maazel performance used to leave me too.

This is a masterful performance of this piece. The trumpet solos were whimsical, bluesy, and smooth - like butter. The trombones and tuna were excellent, too. All were wonderful!

One of the great recordings of this place, up there with Levine and Ozawa.

The Communist audience looks about as impressed as if they were all waiting to get a root canal. Other than that, a great performance!
