- GBH were early pioneers of British street punk, often nicknamed UK82 along with Discharge, Broken Bones, The Exploited and The Varukers. GBH have gone on to influence several punk rock musicians, but their influence has been especially far reaching in metal including the early Bathory albums Hellhammer Celtic Frost, Exodus and each of the big four of thrash metal. Metallica frontman James Hetfield has repeatedly expressed his enthusiasm for GBH and said such bands were the beginning of thrash to him, Sascha Konietzko of KMFDM has said he listened to second wave punk bands before starting his own band, mentioning GBH as an example, GBH have also influenced 1990s and 2000s rock bands such as Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age and Rancid. One of the key bands of the street punk scene that gave a second wind to the UK punk rock scene, GBH were also one of the first bands to add a strong heavy metal influence to punk rock, and would be cited as an influence by Metallica and Rancid. Hailing from Birmingham England, GBH were formed in 1978 by lead singer Colin Abrahall, guitarist Colin Jock Blyth, bassist Sean McCarthy and drummer Andrew Wilf Williams. The band's name comes from the British legal term Grievous Bodily Harm, with which bassist McCarthy had been charged, McCarthy was not long in the group, and Ross Lomas took over on bass by the end of their first year. Playing hard and fast and with no fear of rude or controversial lyrics, Charged GBH first made their name touring throughout the UK and after striking a deal with Clay Records, they made their recording debut in 1981 with the EP Leather, Bristles, Studs and Acne. In 1982 the group issued their first album City Baby Attacked by Rats, which was followed by more touring including their first visit to the United States.

GBH is one of the greatest hardcore punk bands of the 80's. I'm still listening to them 40 years later.

We had the pleasure of bumping into Colin on an elevator. They played at holidays in the sun in Asbury park early 2000s. He's was memorably friendly at a time I was blitzkrieging my memory. Also one of those guys who ages very well.
First show I ever saw- late 80s - Roanoke, VA. Oh the memories. I kept fixing Collin's microphone stand for him. We left bloody but damn what fun.

Seen GBH all over the country. My first was at Brum Golden Eagle January 81, and my 100th GBH gig was Carlisle Brickyard in July 2022. Seen em at Wolvo, London, Glasgow, Brighton, Morecambe, Blackpool, Derby, Nottingham, Coventry, Stoke, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Durham, Stafford, and Wakefield.
