What if you're on a hill and making a right turn, then what? You can still keep the right foot on the rear brake to hold yourself still, left foot on the ground and go right. You know why you can't? Because you never practiced this and go out and see how this feels. Go do nothing but right hand turns and keep your right foot on the ground. If you're not willing to go out and practice, you'll always have excuses and hate on those who can. linktr.ee/GregWidmar
Half expected there to be an onlyfans button :p
I’ve been riding for 50 years yet still find it hard to turn on full lock. I realise now that the problem is in my head, not the bike. Great explanation.
I know he says it’s all practice, but I still have a tough time with it.
You are a great instructor ! Many thanks !
Yep, practicing this very thing a couple of weeks ago. In mid turn I stupidly squeezed the clutch. Still don't know why but I did. The bike went right down, just like you said. LOL! I got a nice bruised ego out of it. But since no one saw me, it didn't count, right?
Did this yesterday myself. I have highway bars on my bike though so got a bruised ego and a small scrape on my shin.
We have all done stupid stuff like that before. I was taking a class and was struggling on this one drill. I finally did it just grab my front brake at full lean because my hand moved before my brain could stop it.
Thanks for your comment. I will cement your comment in my head while practicing.
Correct
Thanks for this! I started riding motorcycle a bit later in life and based my “style” on driving a car with a manual transmission. I was always taught not to ride the clutch. Watching your videos is teaching me feathering the clutch is wise! A new and helpful mindset for me.
Motorcycles have wet clutch. Cars have dry clutch.
@@thanosetsitty1896 Some motorcycles have dry clutches. Though they're probably rare.
@@MrChanw11 Then with those rare motorcycles, we should be very careful riding the clutch.
@@shaihanghani2711 No need, ask any BMW boxer or Guzzi rider they have dry clutches. I feather the clutches on my Guzzi's all the time for low speed manoeuvrers havent trashed a clutch yet.
@@MrChanw11 I don't get it, So is it ok to ride the clutch on motorcycle? what different does wet or dry clutch makes? Will the wet clutch not wear out? I am still learning motorcycle,
My one "accident" was a slow speed right turn. It was embarrassing. Drill baby, drill!!!
Dude. You have absolutely made me make riding again a priority. I knew so little, and thought I knew so much. Decent responsible rider with fun moments, but this knowledge has inspired me again. Mahalo!
Thanks
New rider. Thanks for the simple and clear lesson with explanations. Thank you to your experienced riders who commented, for being honest and confirming your lesson.
Simple clear instructions as always
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thank you, I really needed this!! Great teacher!
Great demo Greg. Thank you. Absolutely love your vids. From New Zealand 🙃
Excellent instruction and it applies no matter what you ride. Thanks!
Another great video for me to absorb and put into practice!! Love this stuff!
I practice this by lining myself up on a parking space line. Start at the top with a left turn and go down to the end of the space, then do the opposite and do a right turn. Up and down and up and down parking spaces. 30 or 40 spaces then turn around and go back. Many thanks MJ!
Nice tip!
Mulțumesc pt efortul tau! Te urmaresc cu mult interes deși nu sunt începător, real folos, succes si felicitări!
Great video! I’ve been riding allot of years and even I get lazy and fail to practice these turning steps! Going to practice tomorrow with my new Road Glide!
I learn something new on all your videos.
Oh man, I like the Foot Peg Press MUCH better than the "Cheek Slide" that people do. That Cheek Slide is too uncomfortable for a tall guy like me. The Foot Peg Press is MAGIC.
EXCELLENT,
GREAT ADVICE, THANKS FOR SHARING THE KNOWLEDGE
That’s something I have never heard of but by now I should have. Wow. Thanks 🙏
Thanks for posting. I'm in the NE so it's always a good mental exercise to think about riding when I most definitely won't be.
Many thanx!
I love this channel, it has taught me so much, thanks again cheers rob
Brilliant very well explained
Thank you for this. I managed to get everything in the MSF course except that darn turn and u-turn! I appreciate your explanation.
Thank you for that advice.
Yes, power to rear wheel keeps the bike up!
:)
Thanks for all your tips and tricks. In this video I especially liked the moment when your were going without the bike. Moving head, hands and body intensively. Showed me your moves in a tactical way. And was fun although :-) Best wishes for 2023 - stay save to all
I did this for a week religiously with my Harley before the MSF course. At the course if you eased out on the clutch you didn’t need idol. It just went by idol. Doing uturn drills I didn’t even touch the clutch nor the brake just a tiny bit of the throttle and i was doing figure 8 in the blue box with no hesitation and I was counter steering like you said. Now on my bike you have to use the clutch and brake because it will be too fast doing uturns…
Boy I needed this, those tight corners would get me each time.
Same technic on a dirt bike. As a dirt bike racer this is good stuff.
this is funny, the first time ever riding my first bike, a 600rr...i had to start at a full lock turn, i was dreading it... but wth i slowly let out the clutch, full lock , counter balancing and off i went. thanks to your videos i have all the knowledge i need to put into practice. I've been getting better, more comfortable on the bike... there's a LOT i need to work on of course but with the help of solely just your videos I'm becoming a better, more confident and safer rider! thanks man. ps... bought both of your books and Lee Parks' Total Control v2 and they have really helped understand more of the theoretical side of things, and your books, with the diagrams are epic training tools. thanks! 😊
As a new one, once I tried to make a full lock turn without leaning the bike.. now I understand why the bike did turn from the opposite.. 😅 I was so confused then 😂
Greg, you are great!! Thank you!😊
Keek them coming !!!!! Always making sense :-)
Great tip! learned now.
Bro I been your subscriber for a long time now and every time I watch your videos I improve. Thanks for all your video.
I use this to actually practice the blue belt parking spaces slalom drill. This way I never have constant momentum of movement helping me out. I'm FORCED....to practice friction zone+proper throttle and some full turn lock for around 80 ish % of the turn. So far..I'm making it every time within each next parking space ( around 17 foot turns realistic/worst case).
Cheers Greg !!
I’m fine doin sharp turns from a moving position but I still struggle with from a stopped position.
I took classes and they said to turn the handlebar all the way while stopped then ease off the clutch and follow through but I kept struggling with confidence in moving forward. Hoping to get more practice. I need to build my confidence and trust that if I just go through the way I’m supposed to, it’ll go smoothly.
Thank you so much for teaching the techniques
Great advice. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Simple yet excellent description to help anyone learning or already skilled! 👍🏻
Omg!! I'm in love with the way you show everything in an exaggerated manner ❤❤ It's very memorable and therefore - useful. ❤😊
great advice thank you
Great video. Thanks
This will help, thanks Jitsu 💯
Awesome info! I’d imagine it’s the same when your riding down the street & need to turn right or left…
Excellent !! Thanks !!
Your videos are truly the best at teaching and just shows how much I really need to practice
👍 great instruction !!
Dropped my pikes peak today in the parking lot practicing. Was doing emergency’ish stops with no foot down then quick left turn. Not enough throttle and maybe not enough counter balance. Down she went. SO depressing. Feels like getting dumped by your girl friend at 11 years old.
part of the process
@@MotoJitsu yep…took about 15 minutes to calm down before getting on the bike. Stomach in knots. I practice your lessons often, maybe not often enough
Well, now that I think about it….better in an empty parking lot than on a main road!!!
Yep. Broke my ankle. Now, I have to wait to practice all over.
Awesome, thanks for your explanation of counter balance 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant!
Thank you for making this. Extremely helpful for a total beginner aka me
Danke!
You really is a lovely teacher !! So understandable! Thanks!
You're very welcome!
Its fun to watch from 2.44, you are moving Like AMECA!👍😀🇩🇪🇺🇲Love from Germany ♥️
Excellent. Thanks.
Thank you for demo-ing this. I see exactly how I dropped the bike. Watching you, I could feel what I was doing and where I erred.
Glad to see you back on the GS.
Very helpful. I didn’t think about pressure on the foot peg
That’s a great video. What I would like to see is doing turns on a hill or slopped road …. Challenging for many including me!!!
Thank you!!!
Brilliant as always
Thanks a lot. You are the best 👍👍👍
Excellent, clear and entertaining way of explaining! Very helpful 👍🏻😊💃🏻
I find it easier to release the clutch only, without any throttle. If I add throttle the bike straightens up and I can't hold the full lock position. I have to be very light on the clutch otherwise it will stall. This only applies for full lock position u turns.
Thanks!
Very good .
I liked the way you explain. Good job. And I liked another video of yours about the cornering on blind road curves too.
And returning to this video. I'd like to ask about letting the clutch go softly to gain tork in order to raise the bike after the clean turn. Your bike is a high powered one. Do you think that this technique (gaining power) would work for smaller cc bikes as well?
Love your videos. Is there a video on starting off from a stop sign in the rain; straight ahead, left turn, right turn, u-turn?
Thank you. Practice makes permanent 🤣🤣
Good one!
Super video 👌🙏
I found that by myself, it's a bit like counter steering, for example if I wanna do a sharp right turn, I make a little left 1/5 of a turn and then a sharp right turn.
I'll have to try this next time I do some parking lot practice.
Are you able to demonstrate this on a 850 lb Harley Davidson Street Glide? It's the bike I ride? Do the same principles apply?
Great Episode 👍👏 Happy New Year From Redondo Beach California ⛱️🏄♂️🥳
On a cruiser-style bike with forward controls, counter-pushing down on the foot peg is less effective than on a bike with mid-mounted foot pegs. Do you need to counter-lean more to make the corner? Or, do you have other advice?
Thanks for all of your great content!
Personally, I find the initial lean and accerating quickly enough for the bike to "take over" are the key points. Though my bike's only 450 pounds or so, so holding it in a stationary lean is pretty easy.
Loud and clear 🫡👋👌
Can you make a video of riding at night? Safety and what to look out for and how to ride differently vs day time? I’m new to riding and the only time I have free is after sundown and when the parking lots are empty
Having been a fan of yours for a long time, going from a novice rider to a vet I see why you do beginner vids. More views. But any tips for more advanced riders too? I’m still looking to improve even though I’ve been riding, on a track, dirt, road, everything I can try on two wheels. Any further advice?
That looks like it could lead to another drill; tight U-turn from stop. Same principle applies only you would go to a full U-turn.
Newbie here. Thanks for this video. 👍
Took the MSF course back in May and just now starting to ride again. Today went on a test ride and amongst a multitude of wrongdoings, accidentally opened the throttle wide while turning right and lost control, think it was mainly due to gripping way to tight and not leaning enough/not counter balancing. Do you absolutely have to use the throttle in this scenario though or would using the friction zone entirely through the turn be possible?
Yeh that imaginary curb you didn't want to hit with your back tyre, you just bounced up it, wiping out half a dozen pedestrians 😂😂
HI,thanks, you prefer your GS to an Africa twin?
Hello great movie very nice motorcycle ;)
What do you recommend if you have to keep your hand on the brake to prevent the bike from rolling. You can't give it throttle if you are squeezing the break and if your right foot is down you can't have it on rear brake
Yeah I want you to do that with Harley-Davidson 700 lb bike
As much as these high intensity low speed manuevers can be useful and proven possible (as shown on vid by MJ), these techniques can also generally be accomplished just by going slow and putting a foot down, which should provide more control.
MJ you definitely got skills but i swear you play too much "floor is lava" out there
Don’t forget to check the opposite direction as well, otherwise you are in danger of getting wiped out on your blind side.
With a pillion, do u recommand same position as bike, or same as driver ?
Greg just posted a video on this the other day. Here ya go: czcams.com/video/HbFy3EIGzUg/video.html
@@davidruggles996 Thx, had not seen that one 👍
so good

Now I know why I kept dropping my bike in slow turns.thanks
Look down go down. Looking out to where you want to go made a huge difference for me
sure does!
