I live here in Turkey with my husband and and yes it is definitely expensive. If you're living here while getting paid a foreign salary it can seem cheap, but it really isn't. I mean fruits and veggies are cheaper here. Medical stuff if cheaper here, but most other things are crazy expensive. We thought about buying a car, but decided not too because even second hand cars are ridiculously priced!!

Having a car is super-luxury in Turkey, if you want to buy a brand-new car even the entry-level ones are priced like a luxury sports car. E.g. the cheapest Wolksvagen Golf is 150.000 liras, for $150.000 an American can easily buy a luxury sports car. Salaries are similar in terms of numbers.(not the value of currency) Also gas prices are ridiculously high, even if you get a car you won't be using it that much. Most people prefer to use cars issued to them for their jobs or they simply use public transport. Turkey is very expensive if you earn in liras and want to buy foreign stuff.

you know what, all is true but every single person has an iphone or latest samsung series. even the ones working for minimum wage. purchasing power is only high for rich people, the rest is living and drowning in debt.
alice, you live in turkey or you just travel or what? i was born in istanbul and have been living here since then. considering your comparison, some stuff are relative in turkey. for example red meat is expensive in west, but really decent in east.

  • @borisbritva7453
    @borisbritva7453 Před 5 lety +2

I can only compare to Russia and Turkey seems like super cheap for the most part. Food, clothes, most consumer goods are times cheaper in Turkey. Real estates are no comparison to any semi-civilized place in the world. You can buy an apartment for $30k in Turkey and it won't be slums but more like middle class. The things which are unreasonably expensive are automobiles, electronics and fuel. Among foods any meats other than chicken. Meats aren't only expensive but overall of very poor quality for unknown reason. Seafoods and fish are expensive which is not justified due to a geographic position of Turkey. Automobiles are unreasonably expensive and the choice is poor. Most people driving econoboxes and vehicles considered middle class in Russia are luxury in Turkey priced above $100k.
Overall Turkey is much cheaper but you must take into accounts that the jobs there are paying accordingly lesser so you would only enjoy it as tourist or retired expat.

Well, I've been living in Istanbul for 3 years now , and I can definitely tell that rent is very expensive in here. Ofc, you can find a place that costs 700 TL, but it's going to be either on the ground floor or even bodrum (-1 or -2 floor) and the conditions are going to be shit. Descent flats start from around 1200 TL and higher. Electronics are overpriced here as well, as you mentioned, cause of taxes. And cars here are expensive as well. As for clothing, food, etc. - yes it's cheap, but not as cheap as it was when I first came here in 2014. Then it was dirt cheap, now the prices are going higher. But overall it's comfortable here if you're vegetarian or vegan.

You forgot to mention bananas. They're insanely expensive in Turkey. Why are they so expensive while other fruits are cheap? Every time I asked this question to my Turkish friends they used to say "Because bananas are imported, and other fruits are home-grown." The answer is legit, okay! But here comes another question: Bananas don't grow in Russia and they're imported too. So why is the price for a kilogram of bananas in Russia three (!) times cheaper than in Turkey?! Btw, bananas in Russia are imported from Ecuador (yeah, all the way from Latin America!), but they're still cheaper than in Turkey. 😂
P.S.: Şu yorumlarda altyazı isteyen arkadaşlar için, bi' zahmet, altyazı yapıversen mi acaba?! Neredeyse her ikinci insan altyazı istiyor. 😁🙈

They have high taxes on things like Alcohol, Gas and the purchase of a Vehicle. But things like property taxes are like $75USD/per year. Cell Phones Plans are crazy cheap, same with food, flights, car insurance and lots of things. Compare that to a place like Canada and its just laughable. In Canada I pay $4000/year in Property Taxes, $100/month Cell Phone. $1500/year Car Insurance, and Toronto has the highest Airport Taxes in the world. Food is twice as expensive as in the USA, even Americans are shocked at much we pay for things. So as a Canadian when I travel to Turkey I really enjoy how cheap things are there. I also love the Turkish Sun which we only 1 month of warm weather in Canada.

It would be good if could find out what they do with those taxes. Do you dare to do it my dear? Keep well darling😗

It sounds pretty cheap for foreigners tho’.. I’m going to Istanbul in couple days for 10 days and was thinking how much do I need for food, some cultural stuff and I’m beginning to think that 500€ should be more than enough and way less than what I expected..

i am turkish and i will explain this ask: is turkey cheap?
actually no :/ peanuts equal in price to gold(1kg)
a Ford Mustang 30000 dollars in America. but Turkey, a Ford Mustang is 500.000 TL. (123 513,82 US Dollars) in Germany taxs are %13 but in turkey taxs are %209
cars are so expensive so turkish people are buying cars from abroad. but it isn't legal.
the minimum wage 1500 eur in germany (1800 dollars) (6000 tl) in turkey the minimum wage is 1600 tl (420 dollars) so surviving is hard in turkey :)

If u r earning in Euros, it is almost free for u... Because 1 Euro is 5.5 Turkish Liras... But for its own citizens, the cost of living is very high unfortunately!.. Let me give u an example: the minimum wage is around 1600 Turkish Liras and the price of 1 kg of meat at least around 40 TRL. Or as u said, imagine if 1kg of tomato is 5 TRL, it is not cheap for a person earning 1600... Another example, 1 liter of oil for your car is around 6 Turkish Liras... U decide...

the thing is if u want to live in a huge city like İstanbul , İzmir , Antalya etc . some of the resources became extremely expensive , (like flat to live , general transport , bills etc. ) BUT if living in a minor city isnt a problem for u then (i think ) it is not expensive. i would suggest cities in the middle and closer to the Black Sea .
and these all for who wants to live in here for a long time or remaining of their lifes.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
if u are a tourist and u are bringing euro or dollar or something , everything u need for surviving is as cheap as u can imagine. wherever u go
