While I can understand these rankings, I think you were a little harsh on Valka. Don't get me wrong, I don't completely condone her actions. However, there are other factors to consider. Firstly, Valhallarama, who is Hiccup's mother in the book series, also spends a lot of time away from Berk on various quests, making her a somewhat absent parent as well. Secondly, due to the Vikings of Berk and the local Dragons initially being at war with each other, it's doubtful that Valka's presence would have helped since it was hard enough for Hiccup to keep Toothless a secret for as long as he did anyway. Finally, no one knew how successful the first How to train your Dragon film would be, especially since Chris Sanders and Dean Deblois were asked to be the directors and make several alterations to the story to achieve the results Jeffery Katzenburg wanted, despite only having 14 months in which to do it. Therefore, having her present from the start was not possible and could have made Hiccup's situation in the first film worse.

If you do something similar with grandmothers, you have to mention Branch’s unnamed grandmother. While she’s only mentioned by her youngest grandson in the first movie, it’s unknown how deep her bond with her other grandsons is. The only moment showing her is her death, where she sacrifices herself to save Branch from Chef. This ends up costing her life, and that’s how Branch became negative. Firstly, Valhallarama, who is Hiccup's mother in the book series, also spends a lot of time away from Berk on various quests, making her a somewhat absent parent as well. Secondly, due to the Vikings of Berk and the local Dragons initially being at war with each other, it's doubtful that Valka's presence would have helped since it was hard enough for Hiccup to keep Toothless a secret for as long as he did anyway. Finally, no one knew how successful the first How to train your Dragon film would be, especially since Chris Sanders and Dean Deblois were asked to be the directors and make several alterations to the story to achieve the results Jeffery Katzenburg wanted, despite only having 14 months in which to do it. Therefore, having her present from the start was not possible and could have made Hiccup's situation in the first film worse.

If you do something similar with grandmothers, you have to mention Branch’s unnamed grandmother. While she’s only mentioned by her youngest grandson in the first movie, it’s unknown how deep her bond with her other grandsons is. The only moment showing her is her death, where she sacrifices herself to save Branch from Chef. This ends up costing her life, and that’s how Branch became negative.
