Bennett makes a reference to John not having run a mile under 4 minutes. The day before this program aired, at the British Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, Roger Bannister and John Landy of Australia were pitted against each other for the first time. At the time, they were the only two who had run the mile in under 4 minutes and Landy was the current world record holder. Although he didn't set a new world record in the process, Bannister ran his faster time ever in beating Landy in a race that was called "The Miracle Mile".
When Roger Bannister was the first to accomplish a sub-4 minute mile in May 1954, he didn't do so in a major sports stadium. Rather it was at modest Iffley Road Stadium, the home facility for Oxford University in athletics (track and field) and association football (soccer). While Bannister was no longer a student at Oxford when he ran the historic race, he had been one in 1949 when he was elected President of the Oxford University Athletic Club and led the effort to replace the bumpy, uneven track with a state of he art (for its day) facility. It's highly doubtful that Bannister would have considered competing on that track in his quest for the record if it had not been upgraded.
Because of my past association with Cornell University track and field, I was fortunate to actually walk on the very same track on which Bannister set the record at Oxford. I was there in 1974, two years before they upgraded the track to a synthetic surface. When I was there, it was still a dirt/cinder track: state of the art in 1954.
The running track portion of the stadium has since been renamed for Bannister. Sir Roger Bannister, MD recently celebrated his 88th birthday in March 2017, but is suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

Beyond that, some of the people whose "end" is profiled by this person are still very much alive. In any case, I find the "sad end" phrase odd. Eva died from complications following a fall, and lots of people do. She and Eddie Albert worked well together and made us laugh on _Green Acres_ Before this show she had starred in the original _The Happy Time_ (not the musical version with Robert Goulet), which actually ran more than twice as long as the musical. I think the woman who was last on this video must have appeared earlier in the show and either the video was edited out of sequence or they taped her and used her as filler when they had extra time for the broadcast (after the celebrity guest). There's no way anyone would guess "pretzel bender" for the female wrestler and then the last guest turned out to be exactly that.

To be fair, they all did that to some extent. More to the point, one of the reasons I've been watching these videos is because everyone is so wonderfully classy--imagine a Price Is Right contestant wearing an evening gown--and it's really not classy to criticize and insult a woman who has been dead for fifty years for something that in the end isn't really a big deal. Dorothy Kilgallen was witty and sharp on this program, I think she brought something very valuable to the panel and the show suffered when she passed.

Eva was great in Green Acres. Zsa Zsa was actually offered the part of glamour gal Lisa Douglas, but turned it down, recommending her younger sister.

I don't know if Eva was the "most talented" Gabor, but she was very talented. But, I guess, since Zsa Zsa was known more for her quirks and private life, Eva did make a bigger name for herself as an actress. Eva goes down in TV history for starring on one of the most recognizable and longest off-network running sitcoms ever: Green Acres. However, Zsa Zsa defines the word "celebrity", while Eva was "the actress" I suppose. What about Magda, the older sister? There is so little information on her out there. Does anyone on here have some reliable and good info on her please. Comment if you do please. It'd be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

For some reason this isn't letting me reply directly to LisaDawnn's comment so I hope she sees this. Mystery guests were paid $500 per appearance and guest panelists were paid $750. When Bennett Cerf first started he said he was paid $300 per week, but by the end of the show he said they were being paid "scandalous amounts" (no idea how much that was).
    BlueShoeLover 1 year ago
My very first full-time job, in 2001, paid me $300 per week! Do you have some sort of comparison rates for 1950s money v 2000s money?
    Jeff Vaughn 1 year ago
    +BlueShoeLover
I don't know if this is accurate or not, but I found on line that $1 in 1950 = $8.33 today so that said, $300 in 1950 would be worth around $2500 today and conversely the $300 week you made in the 2000's would be the same as $36 in 1950.

I wrestled in Junior High. I weighed 125 pounds and was not strong in the bulky sense of the word. But I was very wiry and quick and knew how to use my weight, how to lure my opponent into thinking he "had" only to wriggle out and pin him. I beat a lot of the stronger kids. It was impossible to pin me. That's how strength is not necessarily needed to win in wrestling.

I had to look up Eva Gabor's height because she looked so petite when she shook hands with Bennett Cerf and Steve Allen, both of whom were tall. She was 5 ft. 2-1/2 in. tall (158.75 cm), 12-1/2 inches (31.75 cm) shorter than Steve Allen and 10-1/2 inches (26.67 cm) shorter than Bennett Cerf. So a rather petite woman, I'd say. Based on the way she answered the questions, I think she was pretty smart, too, and obviously had a good command of English. I think she knew how to use her Hungarian accent to convey a certain personality on which she capitalized. By all accounts, Eva Gabor was a very nice woman who was very well-liked by the people she worked with as an actress. I think she had a good sense of humor -- I think that was required when she played "Lisa Douglas" on "Green Acres" for six seasons.

    • @loissimmons6558
      @loissimmons6558 Před 7 lety +8

She was adorably delightful on Green Acres as well as being gorgeous - especially for someone in her mid-40's to early 50's during the run of the show. She displayed outstanding comedic timing on that show, a surrealistic spin off of Petticoat Junction (or perhaps the PJ writers on heavy drugs). But all terribly frustrating to her usually logical husband, Oliver. I say usually logical because what attorney would buy the Haney place unseen except one whose eyes were clouded by an overly romanticized and idealized view of the American farmer. Lisa would say the most outrageous and nonsensical things and then one of the local people would repeat them as if everybody knew about that (except for Kate who was always very sensible). And Eva and Eddie Albert had remarkable chemistry together.
My two favorite parts of Green Acres were Oliver trying to explain the electrical system to Eva (which required nothing more difficult then adding and making sure the total didn't exceed 7) so they didn't blow a "foose", and the time the selvage (for want of a better term) from Lisa's pancakes (stamped out with a "pot's cover") replaced the broken head gasket on Oliver's truck.
And regarding her accent, Lisa would sometimes remark that she had trouble with her "woulbe-U's" and her "wees".
      +ToddSF 94109
Being a Californian who has lived in both the southern and northern part of the state, did you ever notice that in central California there is both a Pixley and a Porterville in fairly close proximity to each other. (The Cannonball would have had a run of about 12 miles.) Of course Porterville's name had to be altered slightly to fit in with the presence of the Bradley sisters: Billie Jo, Bobbie Jo and Betty Jo, not to mention Bea Benaderet's ample charms.
