  • It was there in plain view: Page 292 of the manual. Several people send me messages to let me know that you CAN modulate AN-X with channel aftertouch. I tested it, and they're right. I show how it's done, and explain why I couldn't find it originally when looking for this functionality in the synth. Thanks to Joel from Moessieurs and Ziv from Loopop for getting in touch to set me right.

It really had me going for a little bit there, I even missed it in the manual! I'm glad it's there, because I LOVE THIS SYNTH! 😍

I've run into the "Road Block" sign as well that appears like you can't change a parameter but then I discovered I can change it elsewhere. Yamaha's goofy design that never seems to redirect you to the thing you're trying to accomplish. Design engineers are too smart to understand common sense paths to destinations. They have created a path it's just that nobody knows how to find it. I'm petitioning for Yamaha to develop what I call the "Yellow Brick Road" protocol something that Tony Stark would be very proud of indeed.

I posted this on the Yamaha Musician forum. (Read down) Here are some screen shots of a few experiments of the noted voices. You could do this alone on the M8x for years and never get bored.
You can see so many options for Poly AT and why this is so much better than not having this option.
You can even set curves for the response or custom curves etc. It's endless and well worth having the option rather than not having it on the M6/M7.
I suppose CAT has these options too but when it changes all notes it's not really useful. For example when playing the ANx or EP you really only want a note or two to go out of tune or modulate and not the entire chord or voice. These subtle nuances are what makes sound interesting. Vangelis would agree because whether it's a marching band or orchestra the various detunes, bends and slides that are accidental or intentional are what give sound life.
The parameters are many, the curves are vast, you get (4) total parameter changes if you want, you can apply these to different OSCs, it can be dramatic or subtle, set the ratio amounts, etc. and it's endless and fun which is most important to me.
If Yamaha added a randomize PAT function with one press you could get stuff you might never have thought about.
The M8x is dare I say "revolutionary" being 45 years of age but because it's now implanted in a modern flagship affordable synth with unlimited parameters. It's pretty special being built on the Montage platform plus everything else they have added and that is coming. Sorry to the M6/M7 crowd as I was one of you but this M8x is the way to go until the others get the "x" upgrade.
Whether you have the Fantom with endless add-ons or Korg etc. they can't touch the M8x because of this feature. It doesn't matter until they can catch up with an offering. This is the only synth available that can be the "entire package" so for now it reigns as the supreme champion IMO. I have real deal analogs too and this ANx gets close enough at times I can't tell the difference.
One unusual item I noticed using the PAT curves is you have to remain above the horizontal axis line (at the beginning of the curve) like in my photo #4. When you select a curve or move it below that axis the PAT effect plays even when not being activated. Sort of defeats the purpose of PAT by definition. I suppose Yamaha realizes this but anyway I keep it above the axis. It's probably the polarity as they call it but you can experiment with it to taste or expectation.
Most of what we've witnessed on CZcams is ANx modulation which is fantastic but it goes miles beyond that. I wanted to see what would happen when I caused a "random" detuning in real time of an AWM2/FMx EP voice. I'm actually causing it but when random notes dip or detune within the phrase or chord suddenly it's a new instrument to play. Traditionally you'd have to remove your hand from the keys to roll the pitch wheel and then everything detunes. Not anymore with M8x superiority! This is arguably the greatest music synth ever made considering the value of it too.

It is, I am with you 100 percent. I also think with the secondary display and new gui, the superknob (I usually use the pedal) really comes into its own in a big way.

@@DG-ss1gc Yes it's much better organized with less confusion going on but still needs some tweaks here and there. Don't tell Yamaha but they could sell it for $1,000 more and I'd still say the M8x is a reasonable deal. The price might go up eventually once demand exceeds supply. Or conversely the M6/M7 prices fall.

It seems the new GUI is prettier but it's still complicated enough! Thanks for following through.

That is what I think of as "poor UI design." I would have never thought to look in a completely different place for channel AT vs. where PolyAT settings are; the opposite of intuitive. Me thinks Yamaha needs to fix that quickly and push out an update.

I will say I originally ordered the M6 and then returned it for the M8x because the M8x is a monster GEX/PAT that can change the way literally every voice is played. Strangely I think my CAT channel aftertouch didn't work or wasn't activated as you discovered which was odd on my M6. Some voices had "PAT" in the names but not many and didn't really showcase the power of PAT. Since we're looking at 45 years since CS80 PAT I determined that PAT on an 88 key flagship synth was the most extraordinary item on the M8x. I was right, it is worth leaving the M6 & M7 alone to wait and see whether Yamaha releases the "x" versions of those. Some say it's not useful but I activated it on some EPs and those dull boring EPs come to life. Don't underestimate what PAT can do, it can make every voice special not just ANx. Just get it.

I thought they might sneak PAT in on the Genos2 but no dice. That was an aging keyboard and it could be years before they do a 3.0 so you'd have thought now would be the time to do it to differentiate it from 1.0. The Genos2 update was far less aggressive than the Montage M.

Any idea why SoundMondo works on both my computers (used them as test subjects with Chrome) when using my YC73 but when I connect the M8x it won't connect to either computer? BM told me it was operator error however I've already proved it's the M8x that won't connect. Not sure how it recognizes which synth but my computer sees the M. Is SMondo not allowing a synth different from the original YC to be recognized?

    Hey
Scott so new to the montage
Taken a couple years of weeks to work my way through it
I have an issue that I brought up with Yamaha tech support In the Uk they told me someone would ring me they did not
So want to send audio and midi through USB
Quick sep up menu you have a number of options
Stand-alone , midi rec on DAW and a couple of others I wonder if you could go this this with us as difficult to work out as all appear flakey in operation
So I want to rec midi and audio on cubase 13
So choose midi rec on DAW this switches local off Set one track to midi and one to audio
So montage midi to midi track thru to play montage montage audio to audio track on cubase muted output from audio track to stop doubling of sound
    It works
So long story short if I worked something out
When local is switch off I cannot use the left hand edit screen It is limited in functionality and operation some edits do not work not at all
Switch local back on full edit comes back
    Give it a go

Then the presets on M8x sound differently on M6/7? I mean, no aftertouch because it’s only poly or the presets have both part AT+synth poly AT enabled?

It would be helpful if you deleted the other video, it is adding confusion to the CZcams keyboard community.
