HOW TO POWER ANY BUSKING SPEAKER

  • THREE THINGS YOU NEED:
    1. Pure Sine-Wave Inverter 600W ~$100
    2. Deep Cycle Battery (Lead Acid Battery) 38Ah ~$70
    3. Power Board (with Surge Protection) $5
    INVERTER SIZING:
Look at Peak Power (W), this one is 600W peak.
My AER Compact 60 says 150W on the back. This one works great for me,
The Yamaha DBR12 Speaker in the video is rated at 1000W power, but in reality uses a-lot less.
This 600W inverter seems to do fine.
    BATTERY SIZING:
Get a 12V Deep Cycle battery from 14Ah in Size, up to 80Ah+ THEY ALL WORK THE SAME!
Larger batteries with higher AMP HOUR's will LAST LONGER, but will be HEAVIER.
This 38Ah battery last's me 10hrs+ busking with my small amp and pedals!
    Small Speaker: AER Compact 60/3
Large Speaker: Yamaha DBR12 Powered Speaker
    Mixer: Allen Heath Zed10-60FX
Hope this helps!! Put any questions below and ill try my best!

I tested our setup with a W meter and our Blackstar Artist amp is only pulling about 60W. My inverter is about 87% efficient so we are pulling about 69W out of the battery.
W (Watts)=Volts x Amps. So your battery is say 40amps x 12.5V=500w/69W=7.2 hours of use from a full charge. Your big speaker is similar to ours and it uses less than 100W to make enough sound for the street. I have to admit I questioned the hell out of that and disbelieved the Watt meter I had but it nailed everything else perfectly. So I concluded that they must have some other way of classifying speaker power than power use. It makes no sense to me at all but with your ear drums bleeding it is only using about 150-200W.
Long story short assuming your inverter can actually produce 300w (Many absolutely don't)you have enough of power to run 2 of those speakers and your PA and guitar amp if you want. But I possibly would not recommend running any of these cheap inverts too hard. Mine included and it's not cheap. This will mean you are pulling about 27-30 amps from your battery which will be getting near a small battery's limit for constant current draw.
I highly recommend anyone getting an inverter to buy a Watt meter. They are fantastic.

@@hanf71 Hi Sean. If I were to build another one spend the money and buy a Lithium battery. Our battery is a 130AH lead acid and since I built it I too have learnt a great deal. Lead acid (PB) batteries should never go below 12.2v the inverter will take them down to 11.5v. This has happened a few times now and it has defiantly reduced the capacity of the battery. I spent good money on that battery too. It was by no means the cheapest on the market.
We recently busked for 5 hours running 2x Guitar amps, 2x DB F12 speakers, 1x Tablet and the Presonus desk. By the end of it the battery was down to 12.2v.
Frankly something like this would possibly do the job and far cheaper than building one. Just remember to never ever let a battery go flat! That's any battery I mean.

The size will depend on how much gear you plug into it, and how long you need it to last. If you only plug in a few items that don't draw much power and use it for a few hours, I recommend a Pure Sine Wave inverter like the GoLabs i200 from Amazon, or something similar. I have 2 of these for small set ups, and larger set ups as well, and they all work great. Good luck!

I agree a pure sine wave inverter is the way to go when using with PA equipment. Mimics the power that you get at your home. Anything else will cause unwanted hum, and isn't the best for the electronics. I use a 500w inverter, and even power a small fan that I always like to use while playing. I'm using a JBL Eon One amp, a Yamaha mixer, as well as a few other peripherals, and of course my electronic keyboard.

Yay! You said you use a pretty keyboard! :))))))))))
Yes, I do in fact think electronic keyboards are pretty :)). They sound pretty (or at least they can).
Seriously though, I've been considering trying something like this myself (although it's a bit different than what was shown here): I have a portable AC power bank, meaning that it combines batteries and inverter into a single unit. It also has USB ports for powering/charging any USB devices like a phone or computer or whatever. So the idea is to play my electronic keyboard outdoors, where there may not be power, and I can have my own little power supply in the form of my power bank. Should work well. Just haven't tried it yet. The keyboard also has its own speakers, so I do not need any fancy speaker system or anything of that nature (I'm not looking for "amazing" professional quality sound as this is all purely for the fun of playing music). I'm not even expecting an audience (my goal here isn't necessarily to attract people and gain recognition or whatever), though of course it never hurts if someone near by just so happens to hear the music and wants to listen.

The original Eon One has a 10" speaker and bass is no problem. As a matter of fact, I just replaced the JBL speaker with an Eminence Neo speaker, which was a nice improvement to low end. The Eon One Compact I believe had an 8" speaker. That version has a built-in battery. JBL made the Eon One line confusing, with several variants.

I've tried the S1 and it's pretty great for its size and ease of use! Not as loud as the AER but excellent value!!

Hey man, I actually bought this one in Aldi. (supermarket that also sells random things). But you should be able to find similar elsewhere, search "38aH Deep Cycle Battery"

You can buy a 12v Battery Charger, or a Trickle Charger (same thing just charges slow). You can find these at car parts stores or hardware stores!

@@tomsoutheymusic Mine never worked very well. It never gets fully charged. You're lucky if there's enough power generated to start a vehicle after the battery goes dead.

  • @PetraKann

The black switch on your powerboard is an overload trip - all powerboards must have one.
A surge protecting circuit is a different device.
You can estimate the life of the power supply by knowing the power consumption. You can either work it out roughly by looking at the power consumption on the panel of the each device and multiplying it by the percentage volume/capacity you set the device at.
    38 Ahr at 12 volts = 456 Whr
So you could theoretically run a 456 Watt load/device for 1 hour. Or 45.6 Watts for 10 hours.
This doesnt include the losses by the inverter so the life of the battery may be about 3/4 of these values depending on how efficient your inverter is
(also the power output of your PA is different from the power consumption so you should use the rating or power consumption value written on the back of the equipment. That is, your PA delivering 1000W is not going to consume 1000W. The specification say that it consumes 18W on idle and a maximum of 74W at 1/8 power)

hey tom! question for you, would my 800w Digital modified sine wave inverter work on a Laney ah40 amp? sorry I just find it all very hard to understand and there doesnt seem to be good info online about amps and digital quasi sine wave inverters

    • @tomsoutheymusic
      @tomsoutheymusic  Před 4 lety

Hey Mel! I think the answer is, it would probably work.. it's just not as preferable as a pure sine wave. So this could mean you might get potentially get some humming noises or it might be a little inefficient. It all depends on the quality of the modified sinewave inverter.
People do use them! They're cheaper. But the electricity they output can be further from what your amp is used to, coming straight out the wall!
      Hope that helps!
      Tom

Thanks. Do you have to use a mixer if your speaker has the input channels? Presumably I just use the power supply direct to the speaker and use the speaker mixer.
