    My son, a 50 y.o.fabricator, mechanical tech, automotive electrician and Engine Control ECU builder has converted his repair shop to EV conversion wire harness manufacturer and EV conversions. The back log is up to a year wait, nearly as long as the Tesla EV back order catalog. Growing business. LOTS of room for more shops. A LOT of custom car owners with a quarter million invested think another $50K for an EV swap is COST EFFECTIVE.

    Like every original inspiration, somebody somewhere on the web has already done it! Yamaha released an electric crate motor two years ago, as did Chevy (Connect and Cruise eCrate) and Ford (the Eluminator). Best new tech is the AEM PDU-8 Power Distribution Unit, which massively simplifies the whole build.

      I thought the same especially when the next gen batteries are available at low cost and lower weight. Early 2000s rangers wranglers Tacomas early model transits and frontiers still alive in 10 years might get electrified for a bit cheaper than a new car.

      @@williammeek4078 The trouble is the modification of the transmission wouldn't be cost effective. Take a look at the 'Electric Classic Cars' channel if you're interested in conversions.

      @@eclecticcyclist people have already been doing it for decades. The transmission isn’t the problem. As with everything else, it is the cost of batteries. Take a look at all the EV conversion videos in UTube.

    I only wake up completely when I smell and hear the cold start from my AMG63s… 🔥 However this is a plausible concept, for a few years later since such hand build Vehicles can be kept in mint condition for many years to come. Keep up the good work! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Ford is selling their Mach E motor as a crate motor now! It’s $4095…and you still need the batteries, inverter and other electronics…but it’s a start!

    There could be a huge custom market for this as well. Imagine something like a Chevy Bel air with an electric motor and 200 mile range. How cool would that be to have as a second car? Maybe a Tesla for the "real car" and for long road trips. But as a second car for errands around town and visiting friends, super cool.

    This is ingenious!!
    In the US I was a member of a local Mustang club and every one customized their cars to the nth degree. Usually making them faster more unique looking. The saying at the time was "If you didn't build it, it isn't really yours". I was afraid that with EVs this hobby would slowly die, but electrification of a muscle car or any other classic car can be the hobby of the future.
    It'll make the car as powerful as any ICE car and much less prone to mechanical problems.
    Of course, you'll be missing one of the most important things: The sound of a V-8 with "almost" straight pipe exhaust.
    These cars are typically not driven for long distances. To the track and back or a weekend night cruise around the town à la American Graffiti.

    I love that setup. There are a few companies offering ev crate motors .Electric Gt , hypercraft , and I run webb motor works that has drop in electric crate motors that look like a sbc or a flathead v 12 . It is a lot more sustainable repowering an older car than crushing them and building new cars .

    I think a Volvo P544 electric conversion would suit the Electric Viking. Lots of upgraded running gear parts available as it was and still is a popular rally car because of its coil spring rear suspension. For me the Jensen Interceptor would make a great conversion.

    Hi Sam for me any Porsche 911 from late 80’s onward. I would also experiment on any 4 x 4 / Ute for towing see what you could get out of that. It is going to be a long time before we have a competitive Ute / 4 x 4 for towing large distances in Australia.

    A new Honda CRV in Thailand cost $50,000 USD. My 02 CRV's body and interior looks like showroom new. Hope the Chinese come with a conversion soon and I'd be happy to pay $12,000 to keep our old beast going.

    Back in the 1990s I converted a VW Rabbit to electric. It became my daily commute car. I few years ago I bought a VW bug for my daughter to convert but it still isn't done. In any case, small cars are pretty cheap and easy to convert.

    Great idea. But way too expensive to include in all but special situations.
    I think I see a way to hybridize it.
    Imagine a replacement rear differential that has an integrated motor. Add a 10kwh battery and a charging system.
    This gives you the ability to use regenerative braking and to use battwries to accelerate from stop. This allows you to convert many existing gas powered vehicles to hybrids pretty quickly.
    To add on...
    Imagine a retrofit kit for your boat trailer. A small electric motor to help you accelerate and recover braking energy when you tow. That would help EV trucks as well.

      I am not saying it is a bad idea, but I don't think this is high enough volume to make a difference. Not enough people will do this - if you love your gas car it probably has a lot to do with the gas. My opinion...
      Greener. But not as green as a custom built car. Probably not more reliable due to lots of custom manual labor needed to produce it.
      Converting a car into a plug in hybrid would be easier and cheaper. You get regenerative braking and reduced gas when accelerating - which should allow you to drive green much of the time.
      Perhaps an extra motor and gear box that attaches to the output of the transmission and then to a shortened drive line. Connect it to the brake, throttle, and gear select lines and have it apply power or regenerative braking.

    The Swap Culture is one of the most Exciting things about EVs right now. There is a 1970 Dodge Tesla Swap a Guy has made and it is Incredible! Boostedbois have a Sleeper Mini Van that has a Model S Plaid in it. That thing can fly!!! The future of EVs will not only be the cars but buying the batteries and motors as kits. This would be really cool for Tesla to invest in. Hopefully they turn on Super Charging for those in the future maybe after thorough inspection.

    I'm working on a conversion for my 98 Subaru Legacy. I'm keeping the transmission and AWD. I know it's not a desirable build, but I like my Subarus.

    This would be a fun solution for old vintage semi trucks. I love old trucks, but they're bad for the environment. Converting them to electric is a great idea.

    Wish there were more forged carbon molders in the US, there's alot of pieces on heavy ICBEs that need to be removed, and molded before the engine is pulled.

    So, an obvious application for this crate motor would be boats currently powered by small block V-8 engines. For saltwater boats, this would be a great upgrade due to the fact that they would no longer need to be concerned about how they were going to be cooled. Neither complex fresh water cooling systems or corrosive saltwater would be required to run this setup. Attach this to an already beefy outdrive, replace the fuel cell with a battery bank, and you're off.

    For this to be a viable alternative to a typical crate ICE it has to:
    1. Drop in price to $10,000 to $15,000.
    2. Batteries need to get lighter and smaller.
    3. Batteries need to charge faster.

    I had to spend A$ 7000 on my Ford Transit Diesel in the last 12 months to keep it going. Insane. I need it for work and I don't have the cash to buy a better one, anyway, rather I'd find work that doesn't require a vehicle. Having said that, I love to go camping in it. So for a while I have been thinking about hanging on to it until electric conversion kits become available, or look into it and make one.

      @@Rage1732 The software baked into your car is copyrighted. That means carmakers could invoke the DMCA to shut down third-party diagnostic tools, shut out independent mechanics, and prevent customers from reselling or repairing their own vehicles. You CANNOT extract some or part of a Tesla and install it in another vehicle, including another Tesla. Tesla will become very upset if you do. Tesla has great big hairy mean Attornerys to prevent this from happening.

    That Revolt crate has a Torque Trends 2 to 1 Torque Box. They have several conversion plates that allow for different electric motors. The Tesla motor is the most powerful use of this Torque Box but it can handle way more.
    That is way too powerful for smaller cars so engineering for registration is a problem. Other motors are old tech and heavy/large. Emrax make Axial Flux motors which are small, powerful and light. There 228x90mm pancake motor gives 109kw peak power, can be easily stacked for 218kw weighing 12kg each motor. Mated to the Torque Box this is small enough to fit where the transmission is housed leaving the entire engine bay for batteries, management systems and contollers. While expensive atm a few companies are going into mass production. These small light motors are a far better solution as fitments in trans tunnel is the way forward.

    In the middle of my 1989 Toyota pickup with 487,000 miles. using leaf batteries out of a wrecked Nissan leaf ,and other part and a hyper 9 motor. Goal is 350 mile minimum. With everything so far to make it run,I am at $10,000.fabrication is left .

    I own a 1988 Toyota 4x4 mini cargo van that I bought brand new. It has been my dream to convert it to an all electric vehicle for many years now. Looks Like my dream is very likely to come true with kits such as these now becoming available.

    I own a Pinzgauer 910M military vehicle. It was the European equivalent of a military Humvee. It has an air-cooled 4 cylinder engine. It is no longer being manufactured since BAE bought them out about 10 years ago. A model 3 motor would fit in perfectly and there is a gigantic well that runs about 3/4 the length of the vehicle that would be perfect for a battery, With differential locks on all four wheels and a manual transmission that is geared for 10 speeds a manual would work just like the original Honda Insight. With electric motors having so much torque probably only a two wheel, two differential lock (on this vehicle the front or rear wheels can be independently selected), four wheel drive, and four wheel differential lock needs to be selected. High and low could also be selected, but the clutch and gears could be eliminated. However, the one speed electric motor would suffice for a transmission and ICE.
    This would be the ultimate 4WD vehicle because the fully independent suspension is already designed to carry 10 soldiers with their battle rattle. In other words plenty of heavy electric batteries could be stacked in the gigantic well. Of course a motor at each wheel electric vehicle would be the ultimate 4WD but something like a Bollinger is just too expensive.
    If there are any Pinzgauer owners reading this, it is time to start putting ideas together in our forums for EV conversion of our beloved Pinzgauers.

    1968 Barracuda, 1970 Chevelle SS, 1970 1/2 Camaro SS, an 1980’s Buick Grand National, a Nissan 240 SX Silvia conversion, 1991 Nissan 300 ZX, 1998 Toyota Supra SS, 2002 Nissan R34 Nissan Skyline V-spec, if were just wishing for things like that.

    My sprinter RV.. no more need for propane or a diesel generator. 50 amp plugs are at every camp site so charging wouldn’t be an issue. Fold out solar panels on top would be a bonus. Two Tesla plaid batteries would be fantastic under an RV. With two the range should be sufficient.

    This will be a massive industry in the high performance world. Be a number of years before manufacturers get past current electrification difficulties. Once GM, Ford, Tesla make an easy to use controller, they will sell like hotcakes. They'll need to offer smaller batteries than the standard EV battery. some thing like 40KwH to keep the weight reasonable. EvWest is a great little company

    Being as practical as I am, I’d choose to convert my present vehicles, a Jeep Wrangler unlimited and a Ram 1500. That being said, a ‘68 mustang Mach 1 fast back would be really cool. I’d rebuild and polish the original engine and put it on a stand like a museum piece.

      @@mrwhips3623 consider it a resto-mod. More power, faster, and more reliable. In my case, the engine would still be available should I want that distinct sixty’s ford rumble once in a while. The only drawback is range, but that’s not really a thing with a classic, as most spend 98% of their lives under a blanket in a garage only emerging on summer days for a few laps about town and a car show.

      @@buddywhatshisname522 that's my point. No matter what you do it will always be slower and more unreliable than a modern car even if it's electric. So honestly I'd just keep the gas guzzler since it's a show car

    The ideal candidates are cars and trucks with frames where you hang the battery between the rails. Already mentioned are pickups which is exactly Ford is doing with its Lightning.

    EV West has been mostly focused on bolt on conversions for Porsches. I have a beauty Bullitt green New Edge Mustang with 180k miles on it. It is cherry but won't last forever. I am so glad to hear of the EV West is working on this for EV small block conversions. I can sacrifice my (never used) rear seat for a "seat delete" battery location. Should serve me till my Cybertruck (res number 1,311,000) is ready in maybe 2025. It will be costly but not if they pre-stamp the mounting plates for Mustangs like they have done for Porsches.

    Love to swap the V8 engine in my jaguar for an electric crate motor. Just need to find a conversion garage which will not quote 50k plus on the cost.

    Mach 1 mustang if only I could. I always loved that rig and had one offered to me at 17 but was scared it would kill me. I was likely wise, too... Well, I am sticking with my decision regardless.

    Id like to put an electric motor into the '84 pontiac trans-am project I have at the moment, and all these 'crate EVs' look great but once you look at the cost of the motor, shipping to Australia, someone to install the item and batteries, engineering and testing once it is in, ADR compliance ... your 'cheap' muscle car has now had about (anywhere from) $70k upward to $120k.

    For a ex v6 or v8 replacement of the fuel tank with a pack could work. Just imagine a 500 model fairlane with this.

    My Mom's old '77 BMW 320i would love to have a greater than 97 hp motor and so would I! Been thinking about it for a few months. Car is in great shape, only about 160K km on it but its leaking gas and the fuel injection pump/distributor is broken.

    This was done with a Jaguar Type E which was driven on a demonstration drive by Prince William of the UK. I would love to see this done with all good ICE vehicles.

    I always wanted to do that an old bmw or Chevy corvair as it is using good used parts it is still too expensive and that is even if you are doing all the work yourself. Hope the price keeps going down.

    I would convert my 1995 Saturn SC1 to electric. It presently has a 100 HP single overhead cam 4-cylinder aluminum block engine. The car has many plastic body parts which will never rust out, so with the electric conversion, it could continue almost indefinitely.

    Note: Read the fine print in the Tesla owners manual. You do NOT purchase the software in your Tesla you purchase a license to use it. And the fine print will say that Tesla can revoke that users license agreement at any time for any reason. Like taking a Tesla motor, which contains a processor with code, and putting it in another vehicle. Even another Tesla.

    I sold my 2010 E 350 for $12000 and bought a Mache GT for a net of $55,000. It seems much more cost-effective than a conversion considering I have a new state-of-the-art car.

      Apples and oranges. You're comparing a Mach E to an Econoline? Good luck fitting plywood or a motorcycle in the Mach E or making it a camper.
      I'd take a Tesla powered E350 over a Mach E 10 times out of 10.
      It's great you're happy with the purchase but what a weird comparison.

      It was done several years ago, the E-Type Zero. They sold for around $500,000. And it was Jaguar who built them.

    This is pretty cool because many of the old cars have terrible weight distribution and horrible emissions. This could be easily solved with batteries in the back seat and gas tank area in a pure EV. In fact, I’d be happy with a short range EV in a classic car. 50 miles would be enough for 90% of my driving. I’ll just use a different car for longer trips.
