I wish I'd seen this video before adding oil to my pool and setting it ablaze.
Lmao

LMFAO!!!

Having a pool is hard work omg
It is bro thats why we selling our home all because of the pool! Never ever having a pool!
Ohhhh man. I’ve seen these this year and now that I know they can bite I’m FREAKING OUT MAN.
Not to mention yesterday I was bit twice and had no clue what it was.
Here I go to shock my pool.
Hey folks - don't let the dragonflies bother you. They can eat hundreds of mosquitoes a day. We love them around our pool. No bug bites!
And if you provide another water source for them, they don't have to drink from your pool and risk drowning!
I love them too ❤
Awesome. I noticed them in my pool recently. My water is crystal clear but we do have a lot of mosquitoes around as well. I am currently draining it for the winter but very good info for next year!
I swear I’ve been stung by these many times!
The back swimmers bite
I've been listening to all of your MoneyLab episodes and wanted to watch the videos you brag about ;) I don't even have a pool but I watched most of the video because it was interesting. Nice job!

Great Videos Man.. Awesome
Thanks for your vids!!
To get rid of the bugs you have to shock your pool for anyone needing a quick answer and keep your chlorine level up

I get them out by a net and I'm scared to get them out
I know this video is old, but I had a lot of these tiny black bugs in my pool
I literally could just watch your videos for entertainment!! 😂 I'm glad I have a pool though so it's not weird 😂
This is what I needed....thnx.
Dude - don't let that bug you. I love it!
I have a few very tiny looking black beetle type bugs in my pool. My water is crystal clear and chlorine was a little high last I checked about a week ago. PH and alkalinity were on point at that time as well. Do you know what these bugs are and if they are a bad sign to have in your pool?
Thanks so much!
Thank you so very much
I LOVE pool bugs! I take them out of my pool in the spring then pop them into my rain barrels. They eat all the larvae . They are pretty awesome. They do an awesome job.
😐
Great idea!
Thank you for your informative video. This is our first year with our fiberglass inground pool. Yesterday I discover this tiny black bugs (tons of them ugh) at the edge of the pool between water and the concrete . I scooped them out and shocked the pool. This morning we have less but still. The water is always crystal clear. Why is that? What should I do? Is ot different on a fiberglass pool?
As always, excellent information. Especially since I think I saw a boatman in MY Pool the other day!! I'll definitely blast the Pool with shock to clear the algae!!
BTW, what's SU's opinion on phosphate remover for algae control ?! I am a bit skeptical, as I think pools have been maintained for centuries without phosphate remover, but I'd like to GET your take!!
Also, are water striders something different??
Lastly, I HATE to BUG you😁, BUT does Swim University sell ANY pool equipment OR chemicals??
Our stance on phosphates: www.swimuniversity.com/pool-phosphates/
Water striders are different, but similar to Water Boatmen.
We don't sell equipment or chems. Just information on how to use those things. We're a education media company.
@@SwimUniversity
Thanks for the link RE phosphate remover. It was VERY helpful. I especially liked the knowledge that dead algae gives off phosphates ( SO,in theory, KILLING algae with phosphate remover would then create more phosphates), so I think I'll stay away from it!! I also appreciated the backstory on the "big three" (P&G, Lever and Colgate- Palmolive) soap companies - interesting stuff.
Good info. We only really see bugs on green pools or pools we don't take care of. Thanks for putting this out there.
Or pools included with weak pumps
Thanks for all the great content. I'm a 2nd year pool owner and have referenced your material often and the handbook and course were helpful during my first year.
We recently replaced the pump on our salt water in-ground pool system (with DE filter) which ran 24/7 with a programmable variable speed pump which ran 7am-7pm. During my daily skimmer check I found a bunch of little bugs (almost gnat like) swirling in the skimmer. So I kicked the VSP from 75% to 85% and am going to run throughout the night to try to clear them from the system. My question is do you think this is a result of the pump being idle over night for the past 3 nights with no surface water circulation? Or something else?
I run a dolphin t35 just about daily (didn't last week while I was away), free chlorine has been around 3.5 with each Sutro reading I've received and the water has been clear the entire time. I just kicked the chlorine generate into superchlorinate to make the water a nightmare for any plant or creature.
Thanks for any insight.
I have a black bottom pool which attracts those water skimmer bugs that are on the surface.
I was netting some debris on the surface. I scooped up a skimmer bug and flipped it out of the pool. A blue belly lizard comes running on the retaining wall and catches it in its mouth and eats it.
It was waiting for me to flip it another one which a couldn’t do again in a million years.
Only ever seen one of these. Cleaned the pool, vacuumed, and shocked it. my question is water skimmers. The ones with 4 long legs that scoot around on the surface. Why do they keep popping up and how do I prevent them from returning?
Hi,
I have a 24ft above ground round pool with the Frog Leal System. Can I use Chlorine Shock?
The easiest way to get rid of those nasty critters is to make sure your chemicals are right and get some Dawn dishwashing soap and put it where the bugs are. Works like a charm. I got this info from another pool guy on youtube, the Dawn soap did zero damage to my pool or my pool pump.
You pour it in to the pool ? Or the filter?
@@alejandrarivas6370 in the pool water where the bugs are
What about gnats?
I’m trying to remember but there was a blueish chemical I think called back up that did a couple things, one is help kill algae and two it gets rid of surface tension that the water bugs use to capture or create an air bubble that they use to breath while under water. They either leave or drown. It will foam up when you first add the product but it will dissipate over a few hours. We haven’t had any real problems with water bugs here at our pool but we have a weekly service to maintain it. Pool has waterfalls, slide and in floor cleaning system. Unfortunately there’s no vacuum to waste option on this pool. The skimmers are just a recirculating system at the skimmer from the pool pump return.
I had bugs in my pool, I brushed it and shocked it twice with clorox blue 6 in one shock, then vacumed, I vacume every day anyway. I also ran my filter pump 24 hrs a day for 3 days. My pool is bug free and beautiful, when I test it the chlorine is high, but I live in Arizona so the sun will take care of that.
Thank you for all the help.
I just ordered the Intex sand filter 2800, I think the filter that came with my pool was too weak. I have the Coleman 18' round pool. Other you Tubers that have the same pool recommended that filter and say it's a game changer!
Hi, i know your comment is a year old, but i have the same pool and want to get a sand filter. Did the one you mentioned turn out to be a good fit for the pool? Also, did you have to purchase anything else to get it set up? Thanks in advance for any help 😊
@@FreshSetsbySarah
The sand filter is a game changer, my pool is sparkling clean all the time!
Ñi did not have to get anything extra, just the sand filter and hook it up and you are good to go!
Unfortunately I had to drain the pool and my friend accidently put a few holes in the liner, so I took the pill down.
Have to get another pill for next year, I really miss it.
Have a great summer ⛱️
Yeah I checked this morning and it was a bug festival. Triple the amount of shock and brushed pool.. come to find out my clorinator and plugged up solid.
Oh so no chlorine? That would create an algae + bug issue for sure
I’ve been fighting these stupid boatman and backswimmers for 2 years. My problem is the stairs. Algae and dirt just stay behind it and it’s hard to move them because we have it in place with the deck. Luckily the stairs broke on one step this summer so after this season it’s going away and getting something that’s easier to clean behind and under. Not something bulky like what came with our pool.
I HAVE NOT SEEN WATER BUGS SINCE i WAS A KIDS IN THE 70'S... sAME BACK YARD.. NEW POOL AFTER i BOUGHT HOUSE FROM PARENTS. I retired age 46, so I have a lot of time by myself cleaning and keeping pool crystal clear.. Plus, if nobody is in pool, cover is always on.
Got rid of metals
Got rid of cloudy water
Got rid of algae
Got rid water bugs
How do I get rid of biting fly ant type bugs?
Bite them back.
Hello, thank you for yoir video, we have a UV pool and I've seen the mosquitoes larvae, like red worms and kind of like transparent with big heads worms which I think are mlsquitoe larvae too... I have sued the leaf skimmer non stop and have taken like dozens and dozens of them out... I JUST NEED A vacuum because with quarantine now I can't buy one... Will this resolve ly problem? I'm so disgusted of going inside my pool knowing there. Mught be those gross worms inside, 😭
Can you not in-line your pool? Look up what that is. It Uses your pools filter to provide the suction.
Another option is a “power vac” but that’s $800.
Okay but my pool is crystal clear and I have had a couple boatman in my pool. First time there was only one in my pool and I just scooped it out. The second time a month later I had about 10 in my pool one big one and the rest were medium sized. But my pool is clear and I checked my level’s and they are good. So what do I do ? I live near a dairy farm so I don’t no if that is an issue ?? So do I just keep doing what I’m doing and if I see them scoop them out ? They showed up a day after we had a dust storm. I live in Arizona. I shock once a week and I just my chemicals daily. As my son and I go in swimming every evening.
We had backswimmers like 6 years ago. They were disgusting!! I only had a cheap Walmart pool vac but I had a nice brush. Once I put the shock treatments in with chlorine, they disappeared. We moved that winter, never saw them again. However we just moved into our new house and it's near a huge field so I'm worried they will come back. So I've got a stock pile of chlorine tablets, shock treatments and big bottles of pool chlorine. I come prepared this year 😂
I move water bugs to our bird baths (made from goat troughs with solar fountains)... they keep the mosquito larvae out. :)
I had those in my bathing suit I’m not scared of bug but on that situation i let out major scream
Does this apply to saltwater pools?
What about the nasty horsefly? Do you have a suggestion on how to get rid of those?
I have dealt with bugs before.... They are pretty crazy.
We have well water and shocked it but it created brown water due to minerals, we have been working on clearing it up but now theres these bugs you mentioned, how do we kill the bugs/algae if shock treatments cause brown water? Can we use chlorine tablets?
I've been getting a lot of Buffalo flies this yr for some reason. What can I do to get rid of those?
You said chlorine is the only way to get rid of algae in this video. In another you mentioned a few ways. Thanks
Set up an above ground pool in San diego last summer. Today i saw some kind of bug actually swimming under the surface. Thought I was hallucinating. Never seen one before. Had a fun time trying to catch it. Never knew pools came with bugs that swim. Still no clue what it was. Guessing there's more where that one came from 🤨🙄😬
We keep having boatman bugs even though there is no alege. They fly in but don't fly away.
Same here! Our pool is crystal clear, gets brushed and shocked weekly, levels are good, and still water bugs galore 😩
When this happens to me i (usually once a season) i double shock my pool and they all die.
Good evening I was wondering how can I get rid of ants by my pool they are walking on the edge like a lot of them I just barely noticed them tonight we always have a pool guy once a week
I used some combat max ant baits pretty heavily along the ants pathways for a few days of activity. When the number of ants drops significantly spread some Diatomaceous Earth or DE across their path in a few places and in a complete circle around the ant nest.. look for bare soil.
What about a mineral water pool that uses non chlorinated shock? Any tips to get rid of bugs?
We have water bugs in our pool in our pools Blue Book we just catch them and put them in our pond but should we do what you say plus we don't have a vacuum we just have a robot would that work to
Do the larvae stick to the side of the pool above the water?
What’s your thoughts? Put up 14x42, Intel. Well water. Hard water. Never had algae . Levels perfect with dip sticks. Keep getting large adults. Any more recommendations. Thanks
quart of muriatic acid to bring hardness down...THEN shock. Chlorine won't work if water is too hard.
I had a bunch of the biting water bugs in my pool the day after it was filled with fresh well water. The first day it was fine, but overnight it was invaded.
What did u do to get rid of then
@@blugraham2195 scooped out what I could catch with a screen.
So that's what they are! Water boatmen! My pool is pretty clean but nevertheless I fished out nearly 60 of them today from my lap pool then squished them on the cement. I worked for hours today plucking those little boatmen out with a net and feel confident I have fewer than 10 remaining to get rid of since my pool isn't that large.
It’s so unnecessary that people are killing these things. Water boatmen aren’t pests, and are very beneficial insects. They don’t carry disease and they eat mosquito larvae. If you don’t like them in your pool just relocate them so they can find an actual pond to live in.
Am I the only one that saw green gas come out of his mouth? 1:45 LOL Had to do a triple take there.
Hahahaha...yes! I did the same thing! 😂
I absolutely adore your shirt and these videos!!!
Is a saltwater pool different in regards to the bugs?
I don’t get these. We live in Florida and have the screen enclosed pool, but we are right by a lake (pool edge is about 15-20’ from the lake). We get a blanket of no-see-ums on the surface of the water mixed with tiny grass particles and dirt that make it through the screen; we live in in an hoa neighborhood and the lawn people refuse to point the grass shooting out away from the pool. I have tried spraying the screen and around the pool with essential oils to keep the tiny bugs out, but it doesn’t help. They are so tiny that they go right through our main pool cleaning net. I literally have to get in the water with the ultra fine net to get everything. There has to be an easier way. I’m spending a good hour hand skimming and cleaning the edge twice a week. Should my skimmer be getting some of this? None of this is getting to the bottom, but I still vacuum often too. Any tips?
I just got a new pool that only requires you put 2 gallons of bleach when you fist get it which I did. Its an Ion system so it doesn't require chlorine., I need to test my pool water still but have to wait because I have to let it run throughout the system. So how can I get rid of the back swimmers if I can't shock it?
We got a nest of mosquitoes in our pool!! Is it because my cover for some reason has breather holes or hasn't been used?
I was at a wave pool in Nebraska 2 days ago I got bit on my arm and it was swollen 2 days ago we went home and 2 days later and it was swollen a lot today and I hope if u could maybe identify the bug that bit me
We recently got an intex above ground pool. I’ve seen one water botman or back swimmers in the water. The water is crystal clear and we took in a water sample to the pool supply they said the water is perfect. We have a saltwater system with sand pump. How do I know what algaecide I need? Should I be doing something else to the water?
pH, alkalinity, chlorine. no algaecide. there are more videos for that answer. good luck!
Just brush the pool LoveMakesItHappen. Then vacuum it.
Are you on a well water?
I disagree with the "no algaecide" of the other post. I shocked my pool, but it didn't stop the bugs, algaecide finally worked. Of course, you should clean and shock your pool to see if that works first. But when all else fails, I found algaecide worked for me. Store brand from Wal*Mart, whatever that was.
We have had an Easy-Set above ground pool for several years without any bug problems. This year we put up a metal framed above ground pool with a vinyl liner and all of a sudden we have hundreds of extremely tiny bugs climbing up the support legs and on the edge of the pool. They are actually smaller then a No-see-um. They look like moving wood slivers. They are a tan to brown-black colour and are approx 1mm wide by 3mm long. They seem to be attracted to the water, but die as soon as they hit it. They also die very easily with an indoor fly spray. They were discovered during a heat wave when it was very dry from lack of rain. I live in North-central Alberta, Canada and this is unusual weather for us, especially this close to September. I’ve lived her all my life and have never seen these bugs before! There is no sign of them in the morning, but then it seems like they wait to appear later in the day when the pool is not in direct sunlight. I think that No-see-ums are attracted to these bugs for food. Thankfully they also die as soon as they hit the water; however, some of them have managed to bite us before drowning or flying away. I have no signs of green or black algae. My pump runs 24/7. I did see some pink slime in the hose attached to the pool heater; that pump died and wasn’t running for a couple days. I cleaned out the hoses and put a new pump on with a timer; I also added more algaecide, even though I believe this is likely a bacteria. I have been skimming the top and vacuuming the pool floor daily. I scrubbed the pool walls and floor before shocking it about 36 hours ago. Yesterday it poured, so I wasn’t able to check it. This morning I took the cover off to let the sun on the pool to help decrease the chlorine levels. Again there were no bugs this morning, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t show up again this afternoon.
Do anyone have any idea what these little bugs are and how to permanently get rid of them! Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
First year pool people. What can we do about other bugs in the pool we get alot of Beatles is there anything we can do? We keep our levels where they should be.
O-man I thought there was going to be tips about Yellowjackets. The are all over my pool some hit the water and I guess the are stuck on the surface can’t fly off and if not aware we’ve gotten stung.
We just got our first pool and we had bugs day 2 before we even got to swim in it
I was so scared thinking the bit-
What about getting rid of lawn shrimp in the pool?
What about the flying bugs w/wings (look like
termites)
that have landed by the 100’s in my pool! Thought they’d drown but after skimming them out they don’t die! Got any tips to kill them once removed from water?🤷🏼♂️🤔🙏🏼
how do you get rid of flies around the pool?
Home Depot and Lowes have disposable fly attractant catchers. You put them as far away from your pool and any area you don't want flies around, and the flies are attracted away to the catcher. Once they're in, they don't get out. Once full of flies, put up a new one and throw the old one out. They have these for wasps and hornets too. Also, to deter flies from where you don't want them (around your pool), if you have a deck, fill a spray bottle with vinegar and spray it onto the wood of the deck. Doing so deters flies. It's not a perfect solution, but it helps to keep their numbers at bay. The fly traps work wonders. Give 'em a try!
We just have some spiders this time of year. They love water.
Paula Daly how do I get rid of them !!! I keep finding them is scary
@@msstoday they won’t hang around in the pool forever, and they’re harmless. Just move them if you don’t like them.
Water bugs are the cockroaches of pools
I went out this morning there were HUNDREDS of these little black winged bugs floating dead in my pool. My chemicals measure perfect, and I have a PoolRX in my skimmer. Super frustrating.
I have been battling water boatmen for the last 2 summers and no matter how much I clean and shock my pool they just keep coming back. I manage to get rid of them for a week and then 1 day of lots of bathers they are back the next day.
I get my water professionally tested every 3 days in summer so my water is perfectly balanced. I shock once per week but they still keep coming back. I brush my pool, I manually Vac all of the time because I don't have an automatic cleaner and I still can't get rid of them.
Could they be laying eggs somewhere that the shock doesn't get to? Or am I just un lucky and they just keep landing back in the water.
Having same exact problem. We’ve replaced all our equipment and have our pool checked weekly. Losing our minds, don’t know how to get rid of the algae and bugs!
Algaecide worked for me when all else failed. Of course, they do keep flying in, so I have to skim the pool often, but not only on the surface! Skim the bottom of the pool, wait then skim any black dots you see under the water and on the side of the pool. Keep it up, and they can be kept under control. Yeah, they'll leave when they find no food there, but you can't stop them from flying in every day and seeing if there is food. It's a neverending battle, but algaecide helps to be sure there's no food for them if all else is good. Shocking didn't help me get rid of them at all.
What are the bugs that dive every time u try to scoop them out??
Controlling your phosphate levels will greatly reduced algae. Algae feeds on phosphates.
I'm in NC and get these big spiders that float/walk on the water. I skim them out, but they always come back. How do I get rid of them for good?
I shock the pool after heavy rain to get Rid the algae? I’m about to shock my salt pool here in nc bc of the 3 days of heavy rain on the coast, but there’s always a few bugs after 3 days in the skimmer. The key I believe is rid the pool of algae
I hate bugs
What region of the country can we find these bugs? I'm in NC, but I haven't seen these bugs yet.
We got them in the SouthWest (desert areas) Albuquerque, Tombstone, etc. Never seen them in Florida or Southern California.
can you do a video about getting frogs out your pool?
Oooh. Yaaaas! They would terrorize my pool very loud 1st summer. Next year i tried lots of things to kill terrorize them. It slowed down. Maybe from neighboring 🐱 Cat??? They've swam @ same time every 🌙.
Lacresha Johnson bro you good
If their frogs, eat them....
Live next to a grass field. No luck on shocks, etc etc mentioned in this video. I think we need some pro. Daughter says I need to buy one of those pool robots.
Fiber glass pools can not be brushed either with steel bristles FYI
We have theese boatman bugs in our campground pool and they are a little helpful bc they eat dead ants in the pool and other ded stuf so they kinda like spiders where everyone hates them but they kinda helpful
but I still wanna get rid of them lol
So my pool is alge free..the issue is ..when we want to take a night time swim the bugs seem to be attracted to the lights and the next thing you know there everywhere ontop of the water. Is there a color that you can change the lights for bugs to be less attracted to? New pool owner.
Yellow, like the bug light color
Do NOT use blue light! It attracts bugs!!! Found out the hard way. Yellow bug light color is good advice.
Beetles are still a problem. I sprayed Peppermint Oil Water all around the edges and everywhere else around last week. Still beetles. I sprayed again today.

what can be done to keep bugs out of the water once the lights come on? within a minute of turning on the lights i have over a dozen critters in the water with us... we have a mosquito service and the yard is pest free otherwise

Yellow, dark yellow like the bug lights.
Thank u these waterboat thingies are getting on my nerves lol
I have seen two of these bugs in my pool this week, not sure exactly which one it is. The thing is, my water is crystal clear! Could this be a fluke or do you think this is a real problem? I’m freaking out!
We had them in ours too this year... and our water is also clear. So weird!
Use algaecide. Can always see the algae.
Suggestions for tiny spiders that are floating all over my pool
I have lots of bugs in my above ground pool. New pool owner please help. My pool is clean and clear but I do live in an agricultural city. I keep getting so many bugs
We mostly get beetles in the pool. Would spectricide beetle bag work?
Never put poisons in your pool water! Best I can suggest is strain them out. I haven't found a beetle attractant catcher yet. They do have them for wasps and hornets though. You could put these catchers up far away from your pool to help control them (although you didn't ask). Beetles, are unfortunately a skimmer problem as far as I know.
whats wrong with water boatmen if they eat algae? That sounds kind of like a free natural algae control to me. How about tadpoles? I had a couple of feet of water in a little lined hole, and the next week it was full of tadpoles, of course I pumped the water from a swamp maybe I sucked up some eggs and algae. It was just a tempory water pit for an outdoor event, but now I dug it deeper with an excavator and bigger so now you could properly swim in the space and put a black 20 x 30 heavy duty vinyl tarp in the hole. It's 5 ish feet deep at the deep end and 3 at the shallow end. the hole is in hard clay, so it holds it's shape pretty well , I pretty much need a pickaxe to loosen the dirt to dig. I just roughed in a 1.5 inch pvc pipe under the bottom of the pit for the main floor drain/suction running up the side to where the pump and filter is going to be, then I'm planning to have it go up into an artificial concrete waterfall and dump back in the pool. eventually I would like to make it even a little bigger and daub and sculpt dyed concrete along the walls and floor to have it look like sandstone bedrock, but i don't have the time or money for that right now. I can't even figure out how to fill it since I don't have a well or any other type of water service, or even power for that matter, which means i'll need to use my generator to run my pump when I'm around on weekends. it wont run 8 hours / day that's for sure, maybe some tadpoles and waterboatmen along with the floating chlorinator will keep it good enough. I don't mind swimming in pond water after all. The "pool" may be a little different, but I wouldn't have it any other way. There's nothing special with your standard $50,000 pool except the years of your life your going to suffer working some miserable job that you hate just to pay for it lol.
