Cyclists must ALWAYS be careful around trucks

  • In theory, trucks have enough mirrors to cover the blind spots, but in practice cyclists are often overlooked. That's why cyclists need to know the dangers posed by heavy motor vehicles and their blind spots.

In part, I agree with the message of the video. Stopping next to a truck or overtaking it while it's moving is a deadly mistake cyclists often make. It should be avoided in the same way you avoid walking off the edge of a balcony.
But the issue not addressed in the video is why the f* are cyclists supposed to share road space with big trucks. It's shocking, in the same way it's shocking to stand on a balcony that has no protective barrier at the edge.
The problem is not visibility, and it is not unsafe behavior. The problem is dangerous infrastructure that forces cyclists to share space with dangerous motor vehicles. This is what we need to emphasise always.

You can never avoid this for 100%. Even in residential streets, the garbage truck drives through once a week. To know where are the dangerous places around a truck, safes potentially the life of a cyclist.

Gutes Video!

Sad such #victimblaming nonsense is still produced today. In typical fashion, the victims are portrayed as being responsible for the consequences of road violence. No word about the inadequacy of a cycle bell vs. a truck horn, the need for turn assistants or taking turns slowly. All effort is put on the victims.
0:20 "She was seriously injured and died at the scene of the accident"
0:36 "I think it's because both parties don't pay attention to each other".
Speculatively blaming the dead victim who can't defend herself anymore. Just sickening.
1:12: Claiming "I especially cannot see everything at once" -- while the front mirrors view seems to be obstructed by some kind of curtain... I don't even have words for this. This alone should be sufficient reason to take this video down.
I am sure this is meant well and it's important to warn cyclists about the dangers of reckless truck drivers.
However, the term "Dead spot" is very problematic because it sounds "god given" -- where the real source of the danger are zombie drivers that first overtake you and then forget about you or don't check their mirrors properly.
The problem with this is the sentiment this style of framing creates in drivers and policy makers: "Well she was in the dead spot *shrug*".
Tom Flood has been working on car advertisements and he knows why they love this kind of "education" -- and happily pay for it -- as in this case. I'd really recommend to follow him on Twitter or Mastodon.
I'd also recommend "Helm auf und sieh zu, wie du klarkommst" in "Zeit Online" by Mely Kiyak.
Kelcie Ralph and Ian Girardeau have documented part of the problem in their article "Distracted by “distracted pedestrians”" published in "Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives"

I watched this with wet eyes. I almost got killed at the same place. I was riding in front of all the cars and trucks. A truck came behind me very fast and the road suddenly got too narrow that only a truck could fit. But the truck didn't slow down. I don't know how I stopped in time, perhaps 1 second saved my life.
It made me so upset to hear that both parties don't pay attention. You can say this on some other time but not here. It hurts.
I just asked to paint something on the road to indicate the road gets narrow there. It doesn't require construction. Just some paint! So next time I can look behind me before I join the main road. This is the case for cars, when a lane gets narrow, there are indicators!
