My pleasure!
I agree. Especially here in Britain if we didn't have container ships then we'd be pretty screwed.

@@JeffHK you have amazing videos. I hope to make a channel like you one day
the structure is so well designed wow
@Hammerschlägen M the Expanded Canal (the one in this video) was designed and built by Panamanians. The Americans designed and built the original smaller one which was inaugurated in 1914. Regards.
Sailor: mega ships on montains, rare sight.
Panamenians: its everyday bro.
You’re not wrong, I drive on the puente centenario everyday to work and seeing the canal everyday you’re like ehhh🤷🏻♂️😂

2:01 All the planes look like shooting stars, so pretty!
Clarification: Ships travel north/south between the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Twenty years ago my brother and I did a partial canal transit aboard a cruise ship. After anchoring in Gatun Lake, we disembarked to tour the older locks with operating "steam donkeys" instead of tugs and also swim in the lake too. It was an experience I'll never forget!
Scott, yea most people don't realize it runs more in a north/south direction!

As someone who will never in their lifetime be able to experience the human ingenuity that is the Panama Canal, thank you so much for this! It's so much better than seeing four photos of it in a textbook.
as I live in a big USA city---the images of the night time stars are astounding to me , never get to see that !
I live in rural Montana with no light pollution and I am STILL amazed!
I got accepted to Massachusetts Maritime Academy!!! I’m getting my major in Marine Transportation

Well good luck.
Damn the amount of Earth moved to create a lake. 13 minutes went in a jiffy Jeff. Wonderful as usual sailor boy. Be safe and take care.
They only removed earth to navigate through the mountains passes. Once they built a dam, they flooded the low-laying areas. They didn't remove earth to make a lake.
But think how many years that took and how many people died of disease
@@blackopscw7913 a shit tone of people, not o ly deases, but the excavation operations also took som peoples lives
To think my grandfather had to traverse the Tierra del Fuego when he was in the Merchant Marine over a hundred years ago--it took weeks to get from the Pacific to the Atlantic and it took you about half a day.
Human ingenuity is amazing.
Loved this video!❤️ Stay safe mate!
Btw: I'm Panamanian and I love every time I see this marvel of engineering in videos from people all over the world, visiting our little beautiful piece of land😍
Beautiful country!
Jorge: You're so right on the engineering marvel and the beauty!
I am old enough to remember when some Americans were angry when President Carter turn the canal over to Panama. They were talking as if Panamanians were not competent enough to run the canal. Looks like they are doing just fine, and have been all along.
Jorge, I lived in Panama, in the Canal Zone. I have 2 younger sisters who were born there. I visited last in 2006. It's still a beautiful country with beautiful people. I have many wonderful memories from there. Best wishes and be safe!
Iv'e said this before & I'll say it again, you missed your calling dude, your video editing skills are unreal. If you ever need something to fall back on i'd look into a career in that. Anytime I see you made a video i drop what i'm doing to watch.
I'm flattereed! thanks chris
I think it goes both ways. His editing skills are so good because he had so much time on the boat to improve them!
@@JeffHK your videos are awesome I sincerely love this channel and can’t wait for more uploads keep up the good work 👍⛴
I was the Construction Manager on the Cocoli Locks for the Panama Canal Authority for 5.5 years from 2009 thru 2014 and it still amazes me. It was a tough build but what an experience! Congrates to all involved with the build.

Thank you for let us know more about Panama Canal, as a maritime student it is useful. 師兄加油💪🏿
I've posted this before. I work in Neurology and perform painless EEG tests on kids. I show the autistic kids your videos and they get caught up watching so I can perform the test without them resisting. A recent patient wants to be a helmsman now thanks to you and Saturn!
Finally found a video on CZcams without any dislikes.

These videos are always amazing, the production quality you get while still having to work and do your full time job at the same time is incredible.
JeffHK is one of the few channels that, when a new video shows up, I immediately stop everything, put the computer in full screen, and enjoy the video.
Thanks mark 😂
This is something people don't usually get to see. It's nice to see all work you guys do and makes me appreciate your work to keep the global economy moving. Hope to see more videos from you soon!
Finally, i was really looking forward to a timelapse of the Panama Canal.
This is one of few contents most other people can't copy. You created your own genre and you are practically dominating it while you are doing and earning from the two nice jobs. Damn...that's so nice.
Thanks! Im flattered!
Thanks for the wonderful video. In the 70's, I have a chance to work on OOCL's container ship, later I decided to work on a new OBO ship instead, sailing between Japan and Australia. Life on the OBO (we only carried ore, not crude oil) was less stressful than working on a containership. I have never had a chance to go thru Suez or Panama canal. Thanks for the video and at least I can experience the fun of sailing thru the canal by watching your video. Cheers!
welcome back jeff, good to see new content from your channel. really interesting to see your adventures at sea while most of us are still stuck at home.
all the best from Ph!
Thanks!
Great editing! Thanks I followed my ford mustang from USA to the states and followed the ship through the Panama canal!
Dude, this is great, the algorithm randomly recommended a video of yours to me (red sea to Hong Kong time lapse), and now I'm here.
Who knew that youtube would enjoy videos about big ship sailing the high seas
Those little tugboats hard at work, pushing a big ship with all their might. Makes them look adorable ❤
Ur videos re being used in our Clg for STCW courses Nd also for the subject cargo work(container lashing) etc. Thnk u for making this type of informative videos. Be safe sir during this covid19 situation.
"Picture-In-Picture" with the maps is a great addition.. very nice Jeff!!

I also went two times through the Panama canal also with a Containership. Going through the rainforest with a giant ship is really amazing. But the day of the Passage is always a really long day 😅
Yes!!
Thank you for the video of the new Panama Canal. I went through the older canal back in 1969 while on the USS Galveston CLG-3, traveling from San Diego to the Med and back again. Since Lake Gatun is fresh water we did a test of our chemical and biological wash down systems. I’m surprised they don’t have the Mules that are on the old canal. One fond memory is the night before we traversed the canal. We had liberty in the Enlisted Mans Club, what a rip roaring time we had there. Now that is another story all together.
Take care and stay healthy
I love the sky when timlapseing its so satisfying
Jeff, loved this! I grew up in Panama, and have 2 sisters who were born there (when there was the Canal Zone, Panama). Gatun Lake is about 85 feet above sea level, so that's why the locks were made to bring you up to the lake, and the back down to sea level. Not sure if you're aware, but Panama has been having a problem with some water shortages, and also deforestation problems. The government is trying to address these issues.
yes they recently increased the draft requirement
Wonderful video. Look forward to complete time lapse of trip. We transited same direction west to east back in the 90's. We were on a Crystal Cruise trip, had come down west side of Mexico, and then transited across southern Caribbean with stops on many islands. Hired a car on Aruba and drove with friends around the entire perimeter of the island. Good times. The transit thru the canal was fascinating. A real marvel of engineering. I remember they had a viewing stand where public can sit and watch ships transiting at some point along the way, I think at the western end. Maybe we will see that in the unedited time lapse.
I did 6 transits in the mid 80's. Worked as a deckhand on a 150 foot adventure cruise boat...(ship?)
We took passengers to the sunny islands on the Atlantic side and the jungles of the southern pacific side. Passengers would take the indigenous travel methods. Dugouts mostly.
An incredible experience! I touched the canal walls each way!
Imagine working at the Panama Canal and every day, having huge ships come rolling through, nearly and sometimes scraping the side, while you just watch, waiting for the command to move your tugboat forward
It's funny that I was just thinking of you yesterday and wondering when your next video would be out. You should win some kind of award for this short documentary of the Panama Canal as well as your other videos. Thanks for the most interesting videos on CZcams!! 👍👍
Thanks 🤣
Never thought about the insane engineering behind this! A Container Ship literally scaling up, across, and back down a mountain, all within a span of 24 hours!! Really cool!
i cant believe the Panama canal was bigger than that I learned. Its such a masterpiece to look at but a reminder that the canal took thousands of people to build, which many of them died.
The timelapse makes it look like if the ship just crash into the walls XD. Nice work of navigation and maneuvering!
Man I really love your videos, they give me a look at the career that im into! I'm at first year of Argentinian Merchant Navy School. Thanks a lot for your videos. Greetings from Argentina.
I had am accident last year and ever since after that I was not able to get back into sailing. Watching this give me pure joy and brings back the good old memories of being a sailor. Stay safe and have fun at work Jeff
I had no idea about any of this, you are providing not only a great service to the world but educating people too. Thanks man!
Been waiting for a new time lapse thank you💯
I absolutely love your use of time-lapse imaging with your narration. It's educational and fun to watch artistically; a rare quality in CZcams vids these days. :)
I really did just read about Panama Canal yesterday and here comes a video of it! The sun and the moon aligned and made this happen!
Nice description of a passage through the new lane of the Panama Canal. Really enjoyed the video and the memories from my previous passages of both the old and new locks.
Finally a new Timelapse! Spectacular as always :)
Its great to see you still kicking man! Stay safe, stay strong ❤
Jeff, Thank you. I am from Panama, I always like to show my students more about the Panama Canal. You video has great details about the actual process. I like the way you showed a little bit about the history and maps so the students can appreciate more the distance etc. Thanks for sharing/Gracias por compartir!

Btw I was waiting for your video for a long time and I love your videos and have you ever come to india cuz I am from there 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Fantastic video, I really like the navigation overlays. Editing the yellow ship moving along the route must have taken you ages!
Always a treat when I see one of your masterpieces pop up in the feed! Thanks for making my lunch break that much more enjoyable!
the little tugboats pushing the ship against the aligning structure looked cute
Hello Jeff, your content is incredible, thank you so much for sharing. I get to see stuff i could never imagine since i'm a land rat. You gave me a new perspective with every video you upload, and i am amazed for everything you do did and done so far. I hope you continue your path and stay healthy. Thank you! I love it!
Your swiss friend, Roman :)
Great video, as always. These are giving a great insight on how the world of shipping actually works. And nice to see Norwegian Star at the lake, we've worked on that ship in a dry dock a couple of years back.
The end of this video and all of your videos with the night sky, I see all the stars and it makes me want to weep. It’s so beautiful. I wish I could see it in person from this view.
Great video. My father grew up as a young boy on the Pacific side of the canal, and used to watch boats going through it. I never got a chance to visit it while he was alive, and this is the next best thing. Thanks!
Incredible footage and editing, thank you so much for sharing
Great video. Very interesting. 👌

Sir jeff? Do you have a filipino crew onboard?
My first transit of Panama Canal was early January 1967 after a rough trip from Yokohama, no sun, no stars
and no GPS. High seas all the way. Used radio direction finder to fix positions. Back then, the vessel was towed by trackors on both sides through the locks.
Absolutely INCREDIBLE timelapse. Your service, in our global society, is absolutely essential. People often forget this. You keep sharing --- we will all keep watching. You missed your calling as a Hollywood producer !!!!!! Great job.
Thank you for these amazing insights of the cargo world!
Awesome, fascinating, great footage and put together in an interesting way. Thanks!
Your videos are like refreshing breeze of sea wind in hot summer day...you never know when will they come, but when it does, it is great.
I can’t tell you how much I enjoy these videos. Not only are they beautiful but they’re incredibly entertaining and so informative and interesting. I love every new video!!
As usually, amazing video OOW Jeff :)
Keep them coming, Thanks!
Fair winds and following seas!
I’ve been through the old locks and haven’t seen the new locks. Thank you.
Interesting thank you! That anchor chain is off the hook!
Wow, it seems like there is a whole filming crew doing all these different shots and angles, incredible that this is done by only one man! Great stuff. Keep it up!
Huge fan of the time lapse footage. Some interesting stuff today too such as monkey island, thanks!
This world of shipping is so cool
I love ships
8:30 holy cow, I didn't realise how big your container ship was until I saw you looking down on that massive cruise liner as it went past! Great channel!
Just came here to say thanks for that amazing video. You know which one I'm talking abt. It has 1million likes. It was amazing- no astonishing- no inconceivable- no.... extraordinary!😊 Really made me think abt how small I am compared to the world. And I have always loved sunsets, sunrises, and space. I overthink it, but in a good way. I rewatch that vid at least once every 5 months😂 thank you for posting it
Heard it's pretty rough out there for sailors during corona times. Stay safe my dude
It sure is
Jeff did a video early on about COVID 19 - interesting and informative. His video is actually why I started taking my temperature daily early on before it was required by my company in the U.S.
2:24 It is amazing how large the chain is
Even more massive is that huge lever used to lock the chain
It's so interesting how you take on different pilots at different places to facilitate communication and operations as you pass through the locks, come into harbors, etc.
The part where you go through the mountains is amazing too!
We have missed you Jeff!!! Glad you are well !!!
8:40, A nice Cumulonimbus developing!
Brilliant Video Jeff- answered many of my thoughts and wonders about the canals
This is the new wider lock... The older locks had traction mooring locomotives to pull ship along.
been a long time man! Awesome timelapse as always.. Now I'm having second thoughts of uploading my Panama Canal timelapse.
hey dabi! no worries :) no one is comparing!
A Fantastic video Jeff. I was wondering how you were getting on during the global pandemic. Looking forward to next week. Cheers
After a long time, ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ missed u
Chain drop, awesome! I have never been thru the Panama Canal, Thank you for the tour. Very exciting
Great to see a view of the new locks. I was there in ‘82 before these were built. I remember Mira Flores locks.
That’s really interesting- thanks for the perstpective!
The Casey Neistat of the ocean🤗
aalexistasia So true , So true
Because both have great content
What does Casey neistat have to do with a massive container ship going through a miracle of human engineering?
Thank you for always incredible vlogs. I crossed the canal once 40 years ago. It was Gatun Lake that made me feel "I'm in a tropical forest". Rain and low hanging clouds on the forest were so impressive that I clearly remember the scenes even now.
Your videos are pure quality! Feels like a lifetime since I watched a new video of yours!
Love it.... the hand on lens cap transition is a little much though, for every transition. Maybe just 1 per video
I love your videos the style is amazing❤️✨ much love from Germany
I wish cross world travel didn’t take so long because I love these videos and I want to see them way more often!!!
Man I really liked this video.... Its like you are a movie director, letting us see the radar and all of that, great work man🙌

So happy to see you check in with another vid Jeff! It's been a while! I watched this with my sister who was visiting but didn't get to pay much attention to detail so had to watch it again! Happy travels!
