  • Major Bernard "Bernie" Fisher died today, 18 August 2014. On 10 March 1966 he risked his life to save a comrade whose plane had gone down with enemy troops approaching. This is Toby Hughes' ballad "Bernie Fisher" from his album "Fast and Low". It's done to the tune of Marty Robbins' "Tall Handsome Stranger". All rights to the song are retained by Toby Hughes, and I highly recommend his album to anyone interested in the air war in Vietnam and its music.

From a lost F-35 and a one liner from Dos Gringos on a video to Dick Jonas to this.
    Great music. Great history.
Library of Congress worthy if you ask me.

Wow! I just came across this video and story. I am doing a donation commission to the AFROTC Commander of Detachment 850 University of Utah - a drawing honoring Major Bernard Fisher - drawing his plane and a bit of the scene that earned him the Medal of Honor. What a hero!

Shared this with my family (Bernie is my grandfather) and they all love it. Grandpa was a big Marty Robbins fan. Thanks for posting/making it.

I am humbled and honored that Colonel Fisher's family has seen and liked the video. I have always been in awe of your grandfather's courage and character. When I saw the news of his passing I felt that I needed to share Toby Hughes' wonderful tribute to him. Please give my condolences and my best wishes to your family.
