Yep - just discovered him and I'm blown away by the dude. I'm covering "Maniac" as a one man band (recording myself playing each instrument and singing). As someone who is very meticulous when recording and covering songs, this means I have to deconstruct whatever song I'm covering so that I can rebuild it back - from scratch. No samples or anything like that - just live instruments and MIDI (actual playing and programming). I'm very very big on catching every instrument in the originals. I'm big on keeping it as true to the original as possible while having it still sound different and original on my end. Breaking this song down was a very interesting experience for me. A lot of jazz chords. Plus the whole song arrangement is just bananas. Those jazz chords he plays on the piano flavor the song just that much. For months, my cover had all of he instruments and I caught all of the notes the original had - except for the jazz piano chords. Last night, I finally decided to "decode" and convert those chords in MIDI in my recording software (DAW) - going one note/chord at a time. I did need a lot of help, so I just Googled the correct chords from there. I couldn't believe how something seemingly so innocuous could make my cover sound just that much more... like the original! But holy shit those chords are weird as hell. 7ths and shit, ugh. Way beyond my pay grade, considering I'm a grunge/hard rocker. Like I said, it was a very interesting experience hearing just how much something like that makes the song, and they're so low and far back in the mix. That's the genius of Sembello right there for you. Right before I began working on this cover, I looked up "Maniac" live on CZcams and came across his performance on one of Dick Clark's old shows.
