    A good example of tones in English might be the English word "so", which requires a different tone depending on context. "So" with a high, flat tone is like you're trying to understand something. "So" with a descending tone means you're about to explain something. "So" with an ascending tone is like "so what?".

      THATS A GREAT IDEA!!!! I just did “so” in the 4 tones and it works!! Great for memorizing the tones.

    As a native Chinese, I am impressed by the way matching mandarin tones to English tones, which makes sense. But I also wonder about the 3rd tone, because as far as I know it should be a falling-rising tone rather than a low flat tone. Then I checked my own tones, and I am shocked to find that in speaking, we indeed pronounce the low flat tone much more frequent than the falling-rising tone, especially in the middle of the sentence

    Am I wrong ?

    • @somefuckstolemynick
      @somefuckstolemynick Před 9 lety +9

      No, you are right. But it's actually "the same" as the low flat one, the third tone. When it shows up by itself it's pronounced like you say, starting high, dipping down and going back up again. When it shows up in compound words with other tones (which is most of the time) it's just a low flat one. And since it mostly does show up in pairs, I think she saves the "lone 3'd" until later lessons, trying not to confuse things. Watch her great "Best way to practice tones" video, which is about tone pairs! I think she talks about it a bit more there. :)

      An interesting thing about Chinese is that the same characters are used for a TON of different dialects, with different pronunciation. There are some language resources that will put tones over the characters to help students, but our approach is a little different. We separate our conversational courses and our Chinese character courses completely, so you are able to focus on the pronunciation, tones, vocabulary and grammar first, and then learn to read and write. It's a lot easier that way!

    What is the difference between Chinese and Mandarin Chinese???

    • @YoyoChinese
      @YoyoChinese  Před 4 lety +1

      Great question! The Chinese language has many different regional dialects. The Mandarin dialect originated in northern China, and is now the official dialect in China and widely used and understood throughout the Chinese-speaking world. you sure can not learn a tonal language as a theory in language books😇 I've learned Thai language which has 5 tones, different from mandarin. It's the similar story regarding rising tone anyway as native speakers speak very fast and there's not enough time to use the same tone as in language teaching theory. When I started to learn mandarin I can understand it easily and am fully aware you need to practise listening a lot, practise speaking with yourself in a loud voice(regarding tones-practise not words but sentences or phrases either) and stay in everyday speaking contact with natives(better not with teachers, but ordinary people, sorry that i'm saying this😁). btw As Stuart Jay Raj said they are colours of your voice much more than "tones". You sure get to use it well, if you make an effort.

      This is a great comment - thank you! You are totally right: to learn a tonal language you need more than a textbook, you need to hear native speakers so you can gradually learn to match their pronunciation. Having learned Thai, you are going to find Mandarin pretty easy! 加油 (jiā yóu)! 😊

    Thanks for the lesson, but isn't the third tone where you have a gradual dip of the tone followed by a gradual rise? That's what I first learned about the third tone.

    • @xc00314
      @xc00314 Před 7 lety +1

      That's the textbook version, natives use the low flat tone to smoothen the speech.

    Dear Yangyang, I was told the third tone is down and up, but you seem to pronounce it as a steady low tone. I am confused now. What is correct please??

    • @YoyoChinese
      @YoyoChinese  Před 4 lety +1

      The third tone is traditionally taught as a falling-rising tone, but if you listen to native speakers, that's not actually how it is pronounced. Most non-native speakers who learn the third tone as a falling-rising tone pronounce it incorrectly, and it often leads to them not being understood by native speakers (which is frustrating!). To learn more about the unique way we teach the third tone, check out this blog post, 'The 3rd Tone: How to Pronounce It Like a Chinese Native': bit.ly/2O9KP5D
