  • This is a Stihl model SH 85 blower / vac 2 cycle gas engine. It's been hard to start and won't run for more that a few seconds.
    I diagnosed a bad carburetor.
Carburetor was purchased on Ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/304401642675
This is by no means of a criticism of the Stihl corporation. All power tools need maintenance from time to time.

Looks simple enough. I went to use my bg86 this spring and it did the same as yours. I'm gonna try taking it apart and cleaning it,but I think I'll end up having to buy a replacement or carb kit. The spark arrestor was ok and fuel was fresh. I just haven't ever taken the side off of it and was curious about it and the throttle linkage. I know mine will be a little different, but close enough.

While this is a very good video, I have the older Stihl BG65. My throttle cable's a braided one, with a swivel type c-clipped carburetor linkage arm attachment. It is NOT a formed throttle linkage piece (as shown hear). Therefore, this $13.00 - 14 aftermarket carburetor type DOES NOT work with my application. Oh well, I'll keep researching resolutions. I did do a Gum Out can spray cleaning. However, I probably should take apart the carb this time. It started, ran really well and now won't start again. Lessons learned.

I'm sure all your carb needs is a good cleanout and check for worn parts. Thanks for watching!

Do you happen to remember which one was the idle screw?

Chinese crap. I’d buy genuine Stihl parts.
