- The super-sweet aluminized Tamiya Hornet is suffering from a bit of an identity crisis, it wants to go back to the 80's (who doesn't???) and sit on the shelves of all the Sears and Radio Shack spots it can find. Can't say I blame 'em!

Looks great Fil!! I loved my little heads up turbo hopper! I love the way it turned out! You are 100% right that rushing is the root cause of most failed paint jobs. It is hard not to want to rush it as it is usually the last thing to do before you can go have fun with it so I think all of us have rushed and goofed!! I know I have more than once!!!
Haha me too Addam, I've been in a rush, applied heavy coats, had my masking lift and caused runs in the paint. No Bueno! 👊
She looks smart buddy! That reminds me of my first buggy, the Hoppers fragile sibling known as the Mugen Manx. I was also reminded of a conversation we shared about decals. I think its a word that will always be more fun when pronounced dee-cals.

Couldn't get it clean with dish soap, but the fiber cloth worked perfectly! 👍

The Turbo Hopper was my first RC, my mates had Tamiya's which I was envious of as they were a lot better performance wise. The wheel on top always protected it well though. Nice to see this look on a Hornet and takes me back 👍🏻
P.S. after dropping bodies myself, I now fold tape making a handle in the top of the body. Works a treat.
That tape handle idea is probably a life saver! I'm gonna try that next time. 🍻

A slick trick for painting bodies; use masking tape on the outside of the body to create a handle.

It is always nice to see paint schemes and decals that are different to box art. I notice when you paint (and most others I have watched), you spray in short bursts rather than a constant spray. I always find that each time you spray, stop, spray again, etc there is a greater risk of paint blotches appearing rather than an even fine spray due to the nozzle being partially blocked and then cleared again. Also, I always find I use way more paint than expected (maybe due to my technique). It is very rare that I can complete a whole body with one Tamiya size spray can.
I find as long as I'm using thin coats I'm ok, as soon as I start rushing and use heavier coats, that's when it all starts to fall apart. 😉
Some great tips Fil. Think I'm going to have to watch this again the next time I have a body to paint (As an official old fart my painting has started to go down hill a bit) hehe. Hope you are enjoying your weekend buddy.

I used to have the turbo hoppers (a few of both) when I was a kid. I burnt up a lot of rechargeable AA batteries 😂. I just ordered the 049 decals from MCI. I'll be making the black turbo hornet hopper
Nice, that's wicked! Yeah we'd burn through aa batteries like there was no tomorrow, right? I remember getting rechargeable batteries for the first time, it was such a game changer!

Jet hopper sounds so funny to me, probably because I grew up with it known as the Turbo Hopper. I suppose Jets and Turbo imply speed and radness. Lol! 🍻
@@poorboysrc Thanks, bro! Been watching several of your videos too. Top content. Yeah, but I think Tyco chose well to rebrand it as ‘Turbo’ instead of ‘Jet’. In my country the best seller was definitely the Nikko Turbo Panther, with second place to the Taiyo Jet Hopper. ‘Turbo’ sold a lot back in the 80’s ☺️ The Turbo Panther had a ‘real’ turbo feature too (basically just a 2-speed throttle feature - together with the high and low gearing)
I remember the Turbo Panther, it had the cool radio with the Turbo power throttle stick, lol! We loved our Turbos in the 80's, right?!?! Haha! Cheers pal! 🍻

Another RC Canuck!? 🇨🇦 sweet! I’m in East York Ontario. Where abouts are ya? Yup light coating or what I call “dusting on your coats” always works for me. Dust-coats definitely dry faster, & it gives the heavier laid paint something to keep it in place (in other words less likely to run)! 👍 Thanks so much for sharing, Eh! 🍻🇨🇦

This brought back memories Phil, my very first RC was a Nikko Lobo II from sears. Do you remember those? They were very similar and so much fun! Thank God batteries were cheaper back then for those cars. Another amazing video Phil with a trip down memory lane.
Yeah dude, I had that same buggy! I remember taking the body off and wrapping it in saran wrap to water proof it, lol! It didn't last long after that... 🤦

Turbo Hornet Hopper / Turbo Hornet turned out great! Well done 👍 How well does the spring loaded bar in the rear compensate the axle slap? Did the handling improve a lot?
Thanks for watching and commenting! The axle slap is a bit better, but it still drives like a Hornet, lol. The added weight of the aluminum wheels and chassis has helped the handling characteristics out quite a bit though. It feels much more planted now. 👊🏼

Nice work. How do you find those aluminium wheels on the Hornet? Thinking of getting some for a Chromed out Frog that I'm planning. Is it possible to polish those up you think?
Kiwi Mark, great name dude! The wheels are sexy, that's for sure! They're not super heavy, but enough weight to keep the Hornet's ass on the ground (aluminum chassis helps, too). They have a bit of a texture to them, I'm sure they'd polish up a bit if that's what you want. You can also hit them with some clear coat to give 'em a shine. 🍻

Tamiya paint is lacquer, light coats work best with lacquer because lacquer never actually dries, it chemically cures on the outside.. the thinners always stay active, therefore the lighter the coats tge better. If you put too thick of a coat it’ll pool, or run, and tge thinners will never bond together properly

Hey Filly, this doesn’t relate to this video but I was hoping you could help me out with something? I’m a big Midnight Pumpkin fan like yourself and I’ve just ordered the aluminium chassis after being inspired by your video 😁 I wanted to upgrade the front suspension to the Ampro Engineering double wishbone, do you know if this can still be fitted to the aluminium chassis? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers dude 🤙🏼

I've never tried (or even seen up close) the Ampro double wishbone kit, but I do know of it, I've considered buying it a few times. I'm out of town this weekend, but when I get home tomorrow I'll take a closer look and get back to ya. I'm pretty sure it'll all work together, but I'd like to take a closer look at the chassis before I say for sure. 👊

That's the Tamiya Dark Impact. Its got about 3 minutes of run time on it, lol!
Instead of washing it with dish soap! Just spray it with Isopropyl Alcoholic and wipe it down.
Edit: just got a wee bit further into the video and I see you already know the IPA trick!.
I used to race RC back in the day and my bodies would take a beating. It wasn't until I started washing them VERY well before paint, and even giving them a light scuff that they stopped peeling. It works really well! 🍻
