A lot of big fancy words were used during that Tour

Really amazed by how manual this process is. Seems like lots of opportunity for errors and imperfections. So much different than a modern automotive stamping facility.

So chaparral owns these guys now, i worked on chaparrals back in 07-13.
They were put together crappy, i hope you are doing these better, for the money you want for em

If you want to stay relevant you need to add tournament edition models to the 270 and 302. I would pull the trigger on a new robalo If one of those came with no forward seating, had a coffin box or large in floor box, a real tackle station with tackle storage and a 40 plus gallon live well or twin 30's in the transom. All your boats are sand bar boats and miss the mark for people who like to fish.

18-22 mm of gelcoat? Are you sure it's not 1.8-2.2mm? Nearly inch of gelcoat sounds excessive and expensive! : D
    Nice tour man.

mil = thousands of an inch.

I think he meant 1.8 to 2 mm. You can’t put down 22 mm thickness with a spray gun. 22 mm is equal to 2.2 cm which is 0.86 inch (nearly an inch thick gel coat). You would be putting down layer after layer of gel coat for days to reach 22 mm all around a hull.

I thought he was talking in mm at first too. As others have pointed out, 1 mil = 1 thousandth of an inch, so we’re talking about ~1/2 mm here.

Just saw a 2017 243 cayman have to get cut up for broken fuel tank. The horrible job done by the factory is a testament to the lack of respect for their own work or customers. The tank was secured with tabs to the stringers but not all the screws were even used. There was a pice of plywood separating the tank compartment and the console compartment which is right in front of it. There was also a piece of 2x4 running across the top of the tank. It was untreated and bare wood. I guess it was used to secure the tank somehow. Or it just helped the floor not flex as much across that span. Truly horrible construction buyers beware

Nothing about this hull construction was unique or special. Pretty standardized process and materials.
I really dont understand boat prices. Very basic materials and processes, performed by relatively low skill (and low pay) workers. Boat powerplants are absurdly priced, but thats on MerCruiser and Yamaha. Even when factoring the drivetrain cost, boat retail prices are insane. $100k for an unremarkable watersports boat? Where does the money go?

Low skill is not low pay anymore in the US…especially if it’s a union shop. So many hands are touching this thing. Really makes me wonder why the hulls aren’t made in another country and stacked/shipped in for final assembly.
