What breaks my heart, since the beginning of this incredible game three years ago, is the love that Amicia has for her little brother Hugo. Pure, strong and vital, this love is so consuming that it is the primary reason Amicia is able to move forward, to endure the pain, the grief, and to keep standing chapter after chapter. From the very beginning of their adventures, when they were both young souls innocent of the ugliness of the world they are still living in at this moment, Amicia had a huge responsibility placed on her shoulders by both her mother, and the world around her, which was to give up everything to protect a brother she didn't know. I think that it is important to remember that Amicia is a kid, which can be easy to forget since she, and us as the players, are doing all the grown up things that have to be done in this game such as having to make the hard decisions, killing human beings, and confronting the ugliest minds of their world. Throughout the adventure, Amicia is the one who preserved Hugo's innocence by protecting them both as well as by killing the ugly minded people of their world, on a constant daily basis. No one but her could do it, and even though people keep telling her that she isn’t an army, it seems to me that she is, and she knows it. Hugo prevents Amicia from letting herself be overwhelmed by the darkness of their world. She is old enough to understand what is going on around her, which is dark, but to young to see those things herself. Just like Hugo, Amicia's brain is still developing, and what they are going through is absolutely horrible. After going through all of these things, and after losing so many people they cared about, people who died to help them, people who were also just children, Amicia and Hugo developed an extremely strong and unique bound. They have seen each other at their worst, but also at their best. That is why Amicia can't lose Hugo. Her existence, since the massacres in Guyenne, is dedicated to take care of her little brother. To protect him, both psychologically and physically, to feed him, to educate him and to be his emotional support, which prevents her from having to think about all the darkness that is spreading into her own head. She and Hugo have been in survival mode for so long that she no longer knows how to live without doing all of these things for him. Without caring, loving, protecting, and having him every second of every day by her side. Without having someone to love so deeply. And this love is scary, because it is as beautiful and magnificent as it is dangerous.

This game is definitely a tragic tale of two siblings who try to live a normal life, but when unfortunate circumstances came their way, they can’t avoid the inevitable. :(
What I notice about this game is that it’s a lot more colorful and vibrant than the first one, Innocence. But in that game, it ended with a happy ending. Whereas despite the colorful and heartfelt moments in this game, it ended in tragedy.
Also, a detail of foreshadowing that I notice is that when the kids first arrived to La Cuna, Hugo was gifted a flower crown, and overtime, flowers wilt and decay. King Hugo’s fate was already sealed by the time he set foot on that island. :(
But overall, this game is phenomenal experience, the voice acting is on ANOTHER LEVEL, and it was such a journey to see and connect with Amicia, Hugo, Lucas, Sophia, Arnaud, and all the others, as well as other players who are invested in their journey. I cannot wait to see what Asobo Studios and the team have in store for their next game. :)

Right, every subtle line of the game is linked to their journey through consciousness.
From Innocence to this one Amicia crossed the thresholds alongside Hugo, even the mom tells her "you two share a bond that I can't truly understand", each threshold means a loss of innocence and childhood, thus a mindset change. In the final trip Hugo helps Amicia crossing it, and accepting their fate. As Lucas said in Innocence, the Macula is here to change the world, by dissolving the old one.

I hope that Amicia will find the next carrier and protector and guide them so that what happened to Bacilius and Hugo will never happen again. Amicia deserves her happy ending, and I hope she gets it. How much horror will she have to go through if the third game for a Plague Tale is made? Guess we have to wait.
But the other ending suggests that it might occur in modern times, which means that the year will be in the early 2020s or the 2030s. The 21st Century is going to experience one hell of a wild ride.

I think some of the interacts you see him have especially with Hugo are precious cause you know he had a son once. And in the end Amicia gave him what he needed, Purpose. 18 mins in and I dig that you break away to theorycraft since those are tangents I enjoy doing as well; I think that helped with picking up on themes throughout, especially when Amicia is navigating the phoenixes and must douse the flames later. I also love that your reactions are so expressive, so many of the people I've watched after finishing Requiem looked like they were trying to be stoic for camera - we literally had the same reaction to Arnaud's moment on the beach 😂 So thank you for looking and sounding like you actually were engaged and enjoying the game!
As for the teased ending... I'm open to seeing how Asobo Studio makes a spiritual successor, after all the game is "Plague Tale" so they could do multiple tales of different plague events. That said, my own thoughts were that I think the strength of Innocence and Requiem is that they tell a tightly woven narrative and there'd be tons of expectation on what Asobo brings to the forefront on any future game remotely bearing the same title as these two. Personally, I'd give a spiritual successor a chance. The level of improvement all across the board from Innocence to Requiem was astounding and it's clear that Asobo are dedicated to the storytelling craft, so I'm excited to see whatever project this team works on next.

I also notice there were several characters (including the Count) who talked about the "always at war" mindset. after being at war /and/ losing someone, they mentioned feeling like they could never let it go, "that it always stays with you." I feel like Requiem is Amicia's story of breaking out of that cycle. instead, she'll let Hugo's memory motivate her to leave a more positive legacy for them both.
this also fits with a whole lot of games that do the "sacrifice your loved one or save humanity" type thing, which maybe actually helped me understand Requiem more? (SPOILERS ahead for a bunch of old games ok?) like Life is Strange, with the Bae vs. Bay endings (I always save Chloe :) ). or TLOU, both Parts. fatal plague illness, going from strangers to family, and themes of innocence (or loss of) make some big parallels between Hugo and Ellie I think.
but maybe the biggest parallel I can think of, is The Walking Dead Season 1, with Kenny, Katjaa, and Duckie. like Hugo, Duckie's death is inevitable. the *only* influence the player can have, is on who... well. who takes on a very grim responsibility. same with Amicia vs. Lucas taking the final action in Requiem. but after this horrible loss of family I feel like Amicia's character is set on an overall more positive/healing direction than Kenny's was.

God I played it the day it came out but I'm still not over it. I don't think I'll ever not cry seeing the ending. I can't recall that many games where I felt this strong for the characters. I am still at awe everytime I remember how underrated this franchise is.
Everything is just put together so well, and it's so unique. From the scenery, graphics, mechanics, weapons to the dialogue, even the simple lines..
Like you, I cried a lot during this game. Broke down many times, but it's so, so worth it. It's just so REAL. Life can be dreadfully unfair, and sometimes all we can do is accept that, there's no way around it. This sequel showcases that perfectly, and parallels Innocence's ending greatly. The calm before and after the storm. Getting Hugo through the first threshold back then, and now failing, but stopping the harm and death from spreading just like how Hugo wanted in the first place.
As the game goes on, and everything gradually gets worse, you can start to suspect maybe this can't be fixed. How could this end with a happy ending if everything bad just keeps repeating over and over again? I can relate to Amicia in that way too. I was in denial of this as well, but deep down I knew there was no way out of this.
It breaks my heart everytime I think about how Amicia, barely 15-16 years old, lost both her mother and her brother on that day.

What an amazing Let's Play. It was such a joy to watch you play this game and hear your commentary, Jess!
This is hands down my GOTY. From the visuals, to the soundtrack, to the characters and the writing, the devs really made something special. A game hasn't made me cry like this since I finished Mass Effect 3 from MELE. Running through those waves of rats to get to the Nebula felt like that last run to the Citadel in ME3 dodging the Reaper beam.
My heart breaks for Amicia, but it seems like she's on her way to finding peace. I'm glad she has Sophia there for her, and Lucas (wherever he is). I'd love to see more of her adventures, even though Hugo is gone, but I'd also love a modern Plague Tale too. Either way, I'm excited for whatever the devs put out next.

According to Wikipedia (which probably only lists the major epidemics), the plague after the Black Death was the "sweating sickness" in Europe, which happened well over a century later. So either Amicia is planning to leave behind a sort of guide to future Carriers and Protectors, or she managed to find them before the next major plague and was able to help stop it before it got worse than the Black Death? Which would be nice if she becomes successful in saving some of the future Carriers that never made it in the history books. In that way, I don't see their journey to La Cuna to be a wasted effort, as it gave Amicia a purpose after Hugo died. Still think it'd be neat if she ends up creating a splinter faction from the Order that focuses on actually protecting the Carrier. I could see the Order playing the role as future antagonists, if they're anything like what we've seen in this game.
Hope the next game (assuming there will be a third), if it does end up taking place in a more modern time, isn't any more modern than the early 1900s at the very least. I don't want a Plague Tale game set in current times or in the future, since the historical setting was a big appeal of these games for me.

"The game is absolutely incredible, I just don't know what to think now" is in line with my experience of it too. It's certainly an emotionally resonant game, it succeeds in getting you attached to the characters and their struggles. I loved these kids and wanted everything good for them. It has a lot going on for it thematically and narratively. But still... after the bulk of the emotions wore off... I can't help but wonder, what was the point of all this then? I know the epilogue sets up Amicia as a mentor of sorts for the next Carrier and Protector- with the implication that she'll make it so that they don't have to suffer the same tragedy- but what WAS the point of these two games?
I get that sometimes pointlessness *is* the point of some stories. But I didn't feel like this story- bleak as it is- is one of those. I think Requiem is going for a bittersweet, "a tragedy happened but we can heal" tone at the end. I'm not saying an ending where Hugo dies is inherently bad either. With that logic, you could argue that Basilius and Aelia's story is equally pointless but that's not the case imo, because they are people but unlike Hugo and Amicia not characters- we don't actually know them, they died a long time ago and they function as a warning for our POV characters and a way for them to reflect on themselves more than anything.
Which is why it leaves me kinda hollow when history repeats itself with Amicia and Hugo (with the difference that this time around the Protector has to put the Carrier down like Old Yeller- but hey, she gets to survive? Which is arguably more tragic than Basilius and Aelia's story tbh) while nothing outside of them changes in any meaningful way either- the macula is still a thing, Carriers and Protectors are still a thing and so is the Order and all those who would try to abuse this power. Even if Amicia becomes a catalyst for change in the future, what is the point of all this within the context of her story and Hugo's in these games? Even if Innocence and Requiem are meant to function as setup for a larger story, they should still fully stand on their own, right? Having played them should enrich the experience of future games, but they should not have to depend on future games to have a "point" and deliver a satisfying narrative (and no, I don't conflate "happy ending" with "satisfying narrative").
And also they were things like the motivations of the Count and Countess being kinda undercooked in my opinion. I couldn't take them too seriously, like they really tried (and partly succeeded) to murder the 8yo Carrier's family and expected what? That he will embrace them as parents? That he won't turn on them or go berserk with the powers they knew he had? Smh. I know the Countess is implied to be mentally troubled but still, it's just basic common sense.

    • @epicglitter7218
      @epicglitter7218 Před rokem

so, chances are good that what I say won't really-really persuade anyone who feels the game was pointless, that it's not. ime that's just not how online comments work. so: pls be kind, and let me say up front, whatever your opinion is of the game it's valid!
here's part of my opinion tho. I think one of the themes Requiem was going for, was a combo of (1) futility of staying in a "war" mindset when it's no longer useful to fight, and (2) hope & potential to break out of that mindset, heal, and use your energy for a good purpose. still "fighting the good fight" but not as destructively.
I can think of at least two characters who talked about this feeling that they'd experienced loss of a family member, and they'd been to war, and that these things never leave you. Amicia showed signs that she was heading down that road too. at one point late in the game, Hugo tells her something like "I wish you could stop fighting as hard now, as you did back when it mattered." there was a time when her ferocity, her dedication to protecting Hugo and keeping him alive at any cost, was super necessary and justified. but that's changed. she can't self-reflect, she can't evaluate if her "warlike" approach is truly needed now, she keeps pushing Hugo in directions he doesn't feel right about also. she's driven partly by fears of loss (Hugo) and of failure (as Protector and sister). Hugo wants her to break out of the cycle so many characters are stuck in. he wants her to accept that losing him is both inevitable, and necessary to save countless lives... and he hopes she can cope with that and move forward in life. not stay stuck in the heartache, the despair, and the desperation to keep fighting.
the last scenes suggest hopefulness that she can break that cycle. she seems to have found purpose and meaning in a path that (hopefully) won't involve so much bloodshed. she will talk to the next Carrier and Protector, she will use all this tragedy she and Hugo and Basilius and Aelia endured to prepare them and help them. she can't fix the macula, but she can pass on the best of her wisdom and experience. that's worth something. and the secret scene - with the macula'd child in a modern bed, it seems - hints that maybe her effort of passing on wisdom, started a legacy that went all the way to modern times, when perhaps scientists actually can do something about the macula. it wasn't for nothing. Hugo's sacrifice, and her loss, will prevent others' suffering and save lives.
the last other note of hope is Sophia. she quickly mentions that she's into legal trading these days, so, giving up a life of piracy. not out of moral judgment, but because "she wants to live longer." it's a minor thing but to me that's also an example of a character breaking out of a "war" mentality and looking to her own future with a new perspective
