Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump

- During our tour of southern Alberta we visited Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. The area is a World Heritage Site and was used for almost 6000 years as a site for driving bison over cliffs to obtain meat, hides, sinew, and other materials which were crucial for life in a harsh landscape. It's amazing to think how the Indigenous groups watched the bison and learned how to form the drives to guide the bison to the cliffs. The cliffs currently are only about 10 metres or 32 feet, but back in the day they would have been over twice the height.

When my family and I visited here I was in awe. I was constantly looking around and wondering how the country side looked back then, and how life must have been. One day I hope to check it out again.

It just looks like a wide, desolate land, but I can hear the breath of the natives who have lived with the bison. And the wildlife and various wild flowers are living strong. Thank you for a wonderful trip.

Oh man that is a sad story for the Buffalo and the boy that died trying see it. Guess this one is a prefect Halloween timing adventure in a way. Love that you include all this history . Very pretty plants there, never seen some of those berries before. Safe travels! Cheers! =)

Another fantastic site beautifully filmed and narrated. Thank you for these films, I am learning a lot from your adventures (like pemmican). It is a place with a long history and interesting to know how the bison were hunted and enjoy the shots of wildflowers. On a side note, there is a dry moat at a fort on Governors Island where I visit often, somewhat similar strategy of running so fast the drop is not noted until its too late...
