650 Swapped CX500 On The Dyno! VOLUME UP! EP62

  • The 650cc swapped CX500 build on the dyno! Volume up as this thing sounds AMAZING and put down some great power! This is a long time build and it is finally ready to ride after sorting a couple issues. If you see a specific item on this bike and want to know more about it, I have a dedicated video on it within this playlist with full information in each description.

    For those unfamiliar this is a 1981 Honda CX500 that I have built and has extensive changes throughout the entire bike. For this video the main change is the 650 engine I swapped in from a 1983 Honda GL650. I did a complete rebuild on the engine with stock pistons/bore and a fresh hone. It has new rings and just fresh throughout. I did do a bit of work on the cylinder heads with a light cleanup and port-matching on the intake side to match the fabricated intake manifolds. The exhaust side is merely cleaned up with no big changes there.
    Other components/specifics below:
    - Mikuni VM34 carbs - NO I WILL NOT PROVIDE MY JETTING INFORMATION
    - UNI PK92 filters
    - Handmade stainless 2 into 1 exhaust. 1.5" OD tubing with dual 1.5" inlet and 1 3/4" outlet merge. - 1 7/8" ID inlet Competition Werkes Muffler 3.5" canister version but custom ordered
    - Rae-San Hall Effect Ignition system
    - Ultima Big Twin single fire coil PN 53-434
    On the dyno our main mission was to work on drivability and fueling at normal operating conditions. Simple jet changes and adjustments were needed. As the dyno is a great tool it was able to highlight other issues I had with the bike in the areas of fuel supply and ignition.
    On the fuel supply issue it became pretty clear the petcock I had installed simply could not keep up with the fuel flow demands and was causing a lean condition mainly in the left cylinder. Once we hooked up a simple fuel bottle we could continue with testing. I have since purchased a Pingle 6411-AH petcock which is for the 16x1.5mm threads on this tank. That will sort my fuel flow issues.
    For the ignition misfire this was due to two issues. I had set this bike up with some MSD automotive plug wires that I had lying around but was not using a resistor spark plug cap. The Rae-San system seems to not like those so I have since picked up a set of NGK copper core wires with the 5k ohm you normally see on the bikes. The first few scenes on the dyno you can hear a lot of misfiring which was due to the spark plugs. I had a non-resistor plug in the bike and forgot about it. I ran to the store and grabbed some NGK DPR8EA-9 plugs and that was a drastic improvement. All simple fixes but hard to diagnose on the street.

    Hey everyone I hope you enjoyed the video! Before It gets asked I want to say I will not be providing any jetting information for multiple reasons. One reason is that every combination is different and what worked for this bike may not work for you. Another reason is that if you plan to tackle this yourselves you accept a level of research, cost, and time that needs to be invested and not simply have answers provided to you on what to do/use. Anyway, I'm looking forward to sorting the couple issues and getting this bike on the road to fully test out!

      A call to Mikuni/Sudco got me definitely in the ballpark on a '78 Triumph T140 w/36mm flatslides, a few needle & (one) mainjet changes dialed it right in with my "seat of the pants dyno". That bike had trouble keeping the front wheel on the ground with the nasty TT cams we had installed and the 2:1 handmade stainless header. Not bad for an air cooled Triumph(with many engine mods internally)!
      I get it about tuning info, learned carb fine tuning on my CBX many years ago when it was normally aspirated, got it to run with individual K&N air filters and modded 6:1 header(loud AF), felt like it had an extra 100cc or better after it was done. Hard part is figuring out CV slide air bleeds and spring tension, was rheostat smooth after getting the CV slides to follow the throttle in a more precise manner. End result was 11.01 @ 121 mph at the drag strip with street gearing & open stack on the header. Keep your stock parts, used spares for this mod.
      Honda did a really good job engineering the carb function with stock airbox & engine configuration, hard to out-think their expertise but it can be done!

      Get it that you wouldn't have a stock airbox for that bike, but your choice of carburetion is excellent and will drive very nicely after you get it fine tuned. Thanks man!

    Nothing like real dyno tune to humble even the most experienced "experts" out there! Heck of a way to truly sort out your machine. If you think about it, the expense and time on the dyno is cheaper than slogging around in the dark! Cool dog!

    Really cool video buddy - this would have freaked me out the entire time - one that it would fly off the machine - two it blow up the engine - hopefully you werent feeling as much anxiety as I was! Good to know the details - if this didnt set you back too many dollar bills I can see how this would be beneficial with all your builds. I like that this was more than just about the power power power - this process really gets into making sure that it is running at the level it could/should. Looks to me that if you were looking for the power - 61 HP is fantastic due to there only being 64 HP when it was new - haha - not too many have slipped away in 39 years!!

      Thanks Mike! I was super nervous lol. I DID NOT LIKE standing right next to the bike while making pulls. Kept eyeballing that valve cover hoping nothing would come flying out at my face haha. Indeed the video is about the process and not just a power pull. I always hope to educate on what it takes and what the important stuff is

      For the numbers I'm very impressed! 64crank stock and now 61 wheel. Who knows what drivetrain loss there is but you can assume at least 15%? I'm not sure but just happy with its overall performance

      That was a big part of why the video is the length it is. To be transparent and show how small changes add up. I won't have it back on the dyno but I should be able to get some good testing while riding and speak on the feel. Thank ya for watching!

    Excellent video of good dyno tuning. You may find that after this test session the compression has increased as running on a dyno is a great way to break in the engine and get the piston rings seated to the cylinder bores. It's much faster than riding. That flat torque curve is classic Honda. They love to pull all the way through the RPM range.

      What do you mean? I do not own the dyno or know how to operate it. The tuner/dyno operator is always the one who does that. No dyno facility ever let's you run your vehicle on a dyno as there is a lot to it

      To go a bit further in explaining the process, notice how Mike varies the throttle at different times and is watching the screen. He then sometimes presses a button not to do a pull but to add load the bike to make it work harder. All this is to measure air/fuel ratio at every conceivable rpm/throttle input. We then take that data and make adjustments to the carbs and retest. He is in control of what aspect or area he is looking to measure/adjust

    Cool video. I would love to take my 75 CB750 to a Dyno and get it tuned better. It runs good but a little rich. When I try to lean it out with the air screws I get a lot of decel pops. From what I've read, it's better to be rich than lean.

      Well there are multiple adjustments that need to be made that all affect different areas of the rpm range and throttle inputs. Excessively rich is bad too. Fuel wash on the cylinders can cause ring wear

    Awesome! thanks for sharing, on some of the higher rpm pulls I kept watching the rear tire diameter increase wondering just how much it was going to deflect. Great opportunity for you to see it perform up close like that as a bystander (as in not driving). I too would have been a bit nervous about some spontaneous engine disassembly 😨

    I've watched you put on every single nut and bolt on this bike, buy nope, I'll take that Bobber you built any day . no for power Just because I think it's beautiful. There's an ass for every seat my friend. Well it been a year sense my surgery on my neck and couldn't touch the Cavernoma without killing me we left it a lone and fussed from C-2/T-2 had my second operation yesterday because I have an infection in my spinal cord so they matched the infection with the antibiotics so I just may get another shot at this whole thing.

    Great work on the diagnosis RE: the jetting and ignition. I'm impressed with how flat that torque curve is. Bike sounds great, with jetting changes did you stop the exhaust popping on the decell..??

      Yea there wasn't much curve to that torque line haha. She's a stump puller! With this exhaust there will always be some popping. Its not to an excessive level in the least

      Yea shaft drive does have a pinion jacking effect but I do feel the rebound is far off as of now. We will see how it acts on the street

      @@banditnev not really actually. Thats what it takes. For every 5 minutes you may see on here there is 5 hours that went into it. You also don't see the hours of tuning in my shop/on the street to get it as close as I could.

    I almost skipped ahead because fifteen minutes of a stationary motorcycle hooked up to a bunch of electronics makes for dull viewing. I’m glad I didn’t because I would have missed the whole point. (And I’m willing to bet 99% of us are self-taught so these videos are an invaluable source of information.)

      I was really worried the sound would get distorted by the volume and ruin the recording but it did great! I had my audio recorder going but only used the external mic on my go pro

      I had a miss fire on my VTR when I got it years ago. Very similar to yours. I tried everything through ignition system to ECU through to fuel system, different carbs.
      Turned out to be a crack in a plug cap... That was all it was but so annoying to find!
