QWERTY versus Stenography on Steno Arcade

  • Here I go against myself in the easiest song of the Steno Arcade demo. You can see the speed and comfort of stenography over QWERTY in terms of overall hand movement as well as accuracy and typo-correction. I was a little nervous so neither was a perfect run!
    I average about 95WPM in QWERTY on TypeRacer, and 140WPM in steno on TypeRacer, but it's a little different than writing a song as it's playing.

      @@generalyido Professional stenographs do cost absurd prices, but the open steno project allows a few alternatives for those who want to try out stenography as a hobby
      The free and open source software Plover can turn any qwerty keyboard into a stenograph, you can find that here: github.com/openstenoproject/plover
      I recommend getting the latest weekly release from here to be sure that you get all of the latest features: github.com/openstenoproject/plover/releases
      If you are wanting to try out stenography, make sure that your keyboard has n-key rollover, meaning that your keyboard can detect more that 6-8 keys being held down at once, you can check that here: gadzikowski.com/nkeyrollover.html
      My keyboard supports 30 key rollover, but as long as your keyboard supports more than 10, it should be more than enough for stenography
      And there are plenty of people making diy or prebuilt steno keyboards made to work specifically with Plover, many of which start around $80-$100, you can find some of those here: github.com/openstenoproject/plover/wiki/Supported-Hardware

    I was curious, if I start learning steno from scratch, typing 2 hours a day, how long would it take me to reach 180 wpm? I'm 28, male, 50 wpm sustained speed currently on a QWERTY.
    I get it's very subjective but from your and others' experience, give me a range.

      @@akshatghoshal6098 this may be true, but even as a decently fast typist (~80wpm) with natural language tests, I think much faster than I can type the numbers and symbols often required for coding. And for the same reason those symbols are harder to type quickly on QWERTY, I suspect they are doubly so for steno

    • @alex2143
      @alex2143 Před 2 lety

      @@samkorn4047 Coding is more than just hammering out code. You have to actually think about the code that you're writing.
      I don't even think it'll be faster for coding, and even if it is, it would take so much time to learn how to be efficient with something like this and you'd never get value out of that investment of time. Because a large part of coding isn't writing new code sequentially, but editing and refactoring code. And there, the speed at which you can type is less important than the speed at which you can jump to the correct place in the document, and then type.
      A lot of coders use vim or emacs to be really productive. I'm by no means a master in vim, but it's not very hard to get to a level where you can comfortably use vim to reach the same efficiency as you could in, for instance, notepad. And from there, you only get more efficient. Funnily enough, from what I've seen vim and steno are pretty similar - in steno, you chord together words, and in vim, you chord together movements and operations on characters. Vim is basically to editing what steno is to writing new text.

    Art of Chording is great and I'm totally on board, but this is poor technique for typing qwerty. The right hand is clearly not as capable as the left and the left is over compensating by hitting keys like "u". The right index finger is hitting "i". It's like the whole keyboard is shifted over one column for the right hand, a column is added for the left hand, and the right hand still sits on the homing keys for some reason. It's a disingenuous comparison.

    • @ArtofChording
      @ArtofChording  Před 2 lety +6

      I've talked about this before but while I don't disagree with your assessment that it's not a fair comparison (because no fair comparison could really ever exist), here's my take:
      1. Touch typing was invented after the typewriter and qwerty already existed.
      2. In the TypeRacer competitive typing community, most of the top (150WPM+) users do not use a standard home row typing method. Take Sean Wrona as an example -- his typing is completely out of this world w.r.t. technique.
      3. Ultimately, my own typing speed is limited to around 100-120WPM no matter what layout I use (I've used Qwerty, Dvorak, Colemak, Workman, and Norman). So by typing at the approximate speed that I do, it's as fair of an assessment as any.
      4. I am left-handed if that helps explain anything.
      5. I'm a generally fast typist compared to the masses, but slow compared to the speed typing community. My steno speed is also not outstanding by any means, and yet it's much faster than my typing speed.
      6. This video is truly comparing *my* experience in steno vs qwerty. Norman would be different as it's the typing layout I use most and I type "properly" on it. The video isn't meant to show experts of either craft or anything, it's just an anecdote.
      Overall, I'd welcome someone who considers themselves an expert typist to record their hands and I can record a pro stenographer's and we can create a more fair comparison!

      @@alex2143 Yea, that's just not accurate. Just because you CAN become very proficient with a QWERTY layout by no means makes that the best layout for there to be. Not only is DVORAK superior to QWERTY, it isn't even the only layout that's superior. There are at least 3 that are provably superior.

      @@Astraeus.. there are plenty of experts who completely disagree with you. There are plenty of studies that show that Dvorak is not measurably faster than qwerty. Any perceived benefit comes more from people actually practicing their typing skill than the specific layout they're using.
      I can see you're a bit of a fanboy. That's cute, but it does blind you. You are set in your opinion and unable to accept any facts to the contrary. That sweet sweet sunk cost fallacy, amirite? Can't make it feel like you wasted your time learning Dvorak whereas you'd have been equally productive just further practicing qwerty, because you're a bigbrained individual, and bigbrained individuals don't make mistakes. Right?

      @@alex2143 If I was a "fanboy" I'd probably be using a DVORAK keyboard, no? Meanwhile, without digging out the 2 I have boxed somewhere, I'm pretty sure my 4 keyboards are still all QWERTY. Don't need to be a fanboy to understand that logically, there would surely be better ways of laying out a keyboard.
      Getting good with a single-action revolver or bolt action rifle will NEVER let you shoot faster than an automatic weapon. Same logic applies.
      A keyboard layout that takes into account 1- the language, 2- the frequency of use for specific letters in that language, and 3- the way a hand works, should very obviously be superior. If you really don't understand how that could be possible, then by all means, kindly piss off.

      @@Astraeus.. Meanwhile, actual evidence of Dvorak being measurably faster is nonexistent. But hey, who needs actual facts and evidence if you can just be a retard online.
