EPISODE 108
In this episode I make the Mast Partners - a big chunk of Oak that holds the mast in place within the Deck Structure. Pete caps the Bulkheads and installs the tie-rods. Rowan and Richard keep making great progress on the remaining Bulkheads.

108. Mast Partners & Tie Rods (Rebuilding Tally Ho / EP108)
To donate that money even though the bidder pulled out speaks volumes about you Leo. Good on ya mate 👍
Speaks volumes about the bidder too, unfortunately.
I think we should make a fundraiser to get that money back for leo
Surely, the "runner-up" bidder must have seen this. I would hope he will contact Leo and take the dinghy.
~
Somebody was probably just trying to run up the bids. Understandable to an extent, but foolish. I'd like to think all the viewers/supporters of Leo are good people. Hope this all works out in the end even better than hoped for.
What a stand up gentleman you are sir. Your name gets thrown around on just about every sailing channel on CZcams, and for good reason, you and your team have set the bar as far as I am concerned for not only fine craftsmanship in every case but also for your integrity and character. Just…. Wow! Good on you.
I became a patron today. I stumbled across this channel about five months ago and went back to view the series from the beginning. I held off becoming a patron because I am already a patron for several CZcams channels. Seeing Leo honor his commitment to the boat school, even when it was a personal financial hardship, put me over the top.
Welcome aboard. I think about the enjoyment that Leo and his team have given me ever week for so long now and I don’t even think about the money. I love being able to contribute to this project and knowing that in a small way I helped make it happen. It is the finest quality TV out there.
Leo, don't look so guilty about some mental health time off from the project, you've done huge stints at the helm managing this work, of course you need some breathing time away. Always blown away with the fit and finish of your woodwork, makes me super envious, but also incredibly happy to see it done so well.
Yes, his fit and finish on camera is great, but how many fit attempts and fine tuning go on off camera? Every woodworker knows those fit attempts and fine tuning times. Still, not over shooting the fit, and getting it right in the end, does take skill, no doubt. Very well done by all the craftsmen and craftswomen involved in this build.
But thanks for taking us along..
@@thomasarussellsr nobody’s thinking it gets like that first try. The point is that it gets there.
UPDATE; The dinghy has been sold - yay!
UPDATE 2; We have found a solution for the timber import - yay!
Big thanks to everyone who reached out to help!! (I've now removed the segment of the video asking for help with timber importing, as it is no longer relevant)
Coooooool!
AWESOME!
You probably should pin this to the top of the comment section...
Leo, the customs bond you mentioned is simply an insurance policy purchased by you to ensure the government gets paid any duty and import fees they are due if the person importing defaults on payment. The $50K is only the face value of the policy. You can buy an annual import bond (this would cover multiple imports for a full year) for around $400 or pay for a single use import bond for much less. A customs broker should easily be able to help you with this.
Bump ☺️
Hope Leo sees it, Bump
bump
I appreciate you trying to help, but this is incorrect when it comes to SOFTWOOD imports from Canada specifically. Believe me, I wouldn't have reached out before doing extensive research, and I have taken advice from multiple professional customs agents and importers. What you say is correct for the vast majority of imports but there are specific duties and anti-dumping laws applied to Canadian SOFTWOODS which require paying a cash bond of 50k (on top of the 20% duty) which will be returned (in part, or in full) when the duty has been fully analysed, which typically takes 6 - 12 years. This is all caused by a long, complicated, ongoing political dispute about Canadian softwood imports - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada%E2%80%93United_States_softwood_lumber_dispute
Thank you for sharing and educating me on this! While I have been importing goods into the US for many years, I have never imported wood products from Canada. It is sad to see such a restrictive set of rules in place between the US and our friendly neighbors to the north. Wish you the best.
1) Leo your joinery skills are amazing - the fit of that huge partners piece is airtight. 2) Hasn't Pete come a long way in his comfort being on camera!! Well done Pete. 3) Best wishes on resolving the Canada issue. 4) Glad you had the chance to recharge with a nice sail. Cheers
Well formulated comment Rick, my thoughts exactly....
Totally agree with you Rick , it’s lovely to see Pete has progressed so Much on camera .
100% agree about Pete, he would make a great teacher, his answers to, "what are you doing today Pete?" have gotten super detailed yet still easy to understand to use non boat builder types :)
Check story at 5:41 folks- integrity has not completely gone from the world, but it is in short supply. Please, those of you who have the ability, lets make a donation specifically to applaud this act of an honest man. JSA Productions will be donating $500 and we encourage and challenge you all to donate what you can. God speed and fair winds
I really love how Pete has become much more comfortable in front of the camera.
and shaved, wowww;)))
With enough exposure the human being can become used to just about anything.
Its just me that love Pete vest??
@@thomasarussellsr i once was on a nudist beach, no not everything;))
what brand it is?
Sorry you got shafted on the boat auction. Thank you for doing the right thing.
I sent you $100 using the donation link in the description to help soften the blow. If 100 people do the same you’ll be made whole. Anyone else?
Love the videos and the work Leo. You’re an inspiration. Best - a longtime Patron.
Thank you so much, Killian - that's so very kind of you, and much appreciated!
Well done KM. I only wish I could. But with a household income of under $800 monthly, it's just not in the budget. Being disabled and depending on SSI stinks.
@@thomasarussellsr fully understand. I’m lucky to be able to help.
Just added £10 to the pot :)
Done!
Leo might be time to get the project an office manager to cover emails purchasing and other office bound tasks. You might find many experienced retired local folk who would be delighted to volunteer for the next year.. Remember your on camera chat about delegation?
Leo, keeping to your word to the boat building charity literally brought tears to my eyes. I could tell from your expression and your voice that it really hurt you a bit financially. I will do what I can to help. You have a God given talent as a shipwright, wood worker and sailor. I know your Father and Mother must be extremely proud of you. well done!
Leo doesn't take any time off in over a year of steady work restoring _Tally Ho,_ and for a vacation he takes a week to still earn money toward the restoration, just doing a different kind of work. The sheer work ethic of the man is... inspirational. If anyone ever deserved to have his every plan funded, it's Leo. There' are certainly none who have worked harder toward their plans.
Installing the tie rods reminded me of a conversation I just had at the chandlers when I bought 4 silicon bronze bolts for my boat when I commented on the price the chandler said "yes sure gold bars are cheaper but they stretch more than silicon Bronze".
People, Leo is not made of money so please do not bid and then go "Woppsy, don't have it". Tally Ho has given so much to us, lets not let her and Leo down.
...agree
Leo was kinder than I would have been.
It's ebay bruh.
@@Wild_Bill57 Leo is a gentleman.
How did we guess that Leo would be let down?
The stuffed dinghy bid is very disappointing. The honouring of the donation to the yachting kids and the ongoing work to T H is brilliant. So glad your working sail went well you so deserve some RR.
It's true what they say. "No good deed goes unpunished"
Shame the guy that bought it was not as honorable as you
This why i stopped selling on ebay, dealing with all the flakes and people who want something for nothing.
This is so common with charity auctions. Trolls make fake bids and ruin it for everybody. I have seen other youtubers try this and they end up giving up.
It could well have been a error.
Leo, I also sent you $100.00 to soften the blow. Keep up the good work. Glad you had a week off from boat building.
Cheers
Thanks for helping out
The hurdles Leo has faced with determination, decency, fortitude, good humor, and diplomacy are quite beyond my imagination, and I've sailed around the world. You da man, Leo!!
I admire you so much. I'm a pretty poor student, and I can't really help in any meaningful way except to say keep on! These videos have been an important part of my life since I started watching in July 2020 and I'm rooting for you. Thanks for being an honest and transparent person.
Incredible quality of camera and music work! Very inspiring as usual! Leo, your channel is real breath of a fresh air in these days! Thank you.
Been meaning to become a patron of this project for some time…when I heard what happened with the dinghy and how you made the donation anyway, I decided I can’t watch this stuff for free anymore. I’m constantly impressed with what you are doing on this channel, and the people who are involved with it. Leo, im glad you got to get out on the open water for a little and clear your head, it must have been completely reinvigorating. You probably sailed right by my house! (I’m in downtown Manhattan).
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks and give back what I can.
Pete is such a great character in this saga. The kind of guy I can see myself having a couple beers with after a long day swinging a hammer.
You went through the Delaware cannal to the Chesapeake!! My brothers farm is right there. The house was built in the 1700s. It’s his families house, original land grant to Augustine Herman who mapped the passage prior to construction. When my brother was remodeling, he exposed an old windowsill that had become plastered over when the moved the dormer. He wanted to restore the original symmetry to the historic house. When he uncovered the old windowsill from the 18th-19th century, the old sill had sailing ships carved into the sill!!! His ancestor , as a boy , had documented the different sailing ships that transit the cannal! There are several different sail configurations. It was such a cool discovery. Imagine a boy in 1823 , boredstaring out the window, watching tall masted ships going by, probably pulled along by donkeys and ropes through the cannal? If I can find a good picture, I will share it.
Gosh, I've missed my regular fix (a week?) of seeing progress on Tally Ho.
I can't be the only person who is constantly blown away by both the quality of the workmanship shown by Leo's team and the film output which I reckon puts more than a few professional TV producers to shame. Glorious stuff, thank you Leo. I'm really glad to be one of your Patreons - just wish I could more posìtively solve or otherwise help sort your present issues. Fingers crossed, someone amongst your subscriber base will have a solution.
Hi Leo, I've reached out to a few importers on your behalf and I'm hopeful we can get someone to help. Love the great work, I'm from the Bronx so I especially appreciate your donation, so I will do everything I can to help with the importing situation.
Ah, perfect timing. Wine, cheese, Tally Ho. Like, play, weekend saved ;)
click, watch how long it is, and i am already sad that it will be over in 20 minutes ;))
WoW! Pete looked about 10 years old after he shaved his beard off 🤣🤣
Great to see how much more relaxed he has become in front of the camera with every passing video
Pete, you're a Rockstar craftsman and so fun to watch of course you're a natural in front of a Camera. But I gotta say Ronan's skills and how he has developed are unbelievable. I missed the name of your Veteran Boat Builder but his skills speak for themselves in quality. Oh, and of course Leo, artist and team builder, awesome!!!
Good luck with the deck timber, Leo; you have built up a very diverse and supportive community so I am optimistic you'll get it sorted.
(BTW Pete is getting very chatty these days!)
Well, let's get serious here, now. Pete's a star now, and he's grown into his role very comfortably. I for one approve! :)
Yea, I relate a lot to Pete, I also found it awkward when I started my CZcams channel, but at least I can only turn on the camera when I feel like it,it must have been tough for him to find himself on camera at any time, but yes, he seems much more comfortable now
I could be wrong, but was Pete formerly a clothing model?
You truly r an amazing person. 👏 to still give to the charity!! Bravo mate!
The east coast sailing video clips makes me think how amazing it's going to be watching you sail Tally Ho - and what a great video maker you are as well as Boat builder.! Keep going Leo and the team!!
At 8:49 our elder shipwright says "In hindsight, I should have put the forward end in first" and here we learn the nautical origin of "First and Foremost" meaning build he foremost bulkhead first!
I may be restating what everyone already knows, but I am so jazzed by the part at 14:50 or so. Metals are most effective when used in a pulling motion (tension). Woods are most effective in a pushing motion (compression). Those bolts and those wooden members are really dissimilar in their strengths, but they are engineered to use the best of their individual attributes. Sweet.
It'll be paradise to sit in the salon, to look up & see all the disparate parts working together - decking, planking, beams, frames, rivets, bolts & tie rods. Mast & skylight too, of course, but look carefully to find the wedged ends of a few trenails. Freakin' visual symphony.
Woods are actually also most effective in tension (approximately twice as strong as in compression) . But you're right, like in Tally Ho's case, wood is often used as a construction material taking compression forces.
One thing I was wondering about while watching this part, is the strength of the wood around the head of the tie rod.
There’s a bunch of half beams on either side that can take compression loads, but only two tie rods. And while the bronze rods have significant tensile strength, I would worry that they are limited by the area under the head to spread that load out across the wood and this would compresses or even splits.
Probably there is a rule being applied that gives an adequate head size for rod cross-section.
Pete's gotten so comfortable on camera that he should have is own show. Here's an idea: It would be titled "What Are You Doing?" and the show is Pete travelling around talking to various craftspeople and artisans about, well, what they are doing :) . Also, Leo, you're a stand-up guy for making the donation. In a media world full of outrage and negativity, your channel is a balm on the spirit.
It's great to see Pete more relaxed when on camera . Glad to hear you are taking some time for yourself .
Oh no, I have just watched the whole playlist in two weeks and now i'll habe to wait for new episodes.
Watching the partners slide home was immensely satisfying! What a lovely bit of woodwork.
Hear, hear.
You've talked about how busy you are, how little time off you've had, the stress from all the run up to the move, etc. so I'm really glad you at least got a few days off for a working holiday. It's so important to take at least a little time.
Also, you're really a hell of a guy for donating that money.
Thanks for another great installment Leo. Love your work. You are a scholar and a gentleman. Love that you honored your commitment in making that donation. The world needs more people like you!! Keep up the great work.
Unfortunately, not the first flake out on a higher profile Ebay auction I've seen. They should really have a better verification program in place to prevent things like this. Very stand up thing of you to cover half of a fraudulent bid to that organization.
Factoring in the fees eBay takes out of the final selling price, Leo really went better than half by a good margin. Integrity.
Its all going to work out for you bud with the deck timbers and the selling of the little dingy sail boat, let it go and be at peace. Its all going to work out fine.. Awesome to see a young man with real character and integrity in the midst of challenging situations. Leo you are setting the bar from a many young men and women who will one day follow in your steps. Cheers bruh. Have a good one.
That is my definition of a True Woodworker. They *know* that the 100 m (300 ft) tall trees do NOT pump water. It "wicks" up through the end-grain!!! This means that any end-grain that is ever in contact with water will immediately wick it into the timber. This causes the timber to swell, and to rot. The True Woodworker knows that the ONLY way to prevent this is to seal the end grain.
For 35 years, I have walked past a hand crafted, complex, wooden, fence. Every five years it rots from the ends of the boards where the butt against uprights. The owner became an acquaintance. One day he said he was going to hire someone to replace the fence and I taught a lesson in end wicking. This fourth fence has now lasted 18 years, three times as long as the others, and shows not the slightest sign of decay. All of the end-grain was sealed before assembly.
Capillary action.
@@jbuckley2546 lol. Both. The capillaries are arranged in a linear fashion in a tree, or "grains" to a woodworker.
@Edward Schmitt both
Oh man... When he dropped in that mast partner, it was the most satisfying moment ever... I get that a lot on these programs, but that took the prize!
Most oddly satisfying ever! 😁👍⛵

Respect to you for honor your donation. A person word should be the most important it shows clearly a high integrity .
To Leo and Gang, I’m so disappointed by the lost sale of the dinghy. I’m also blown away by how you have honored your committment to the kids charity back east. I have sent another donation to help a little. I hope all of your subscribers who can afford it will consider sending something too.
Always sad to see an episode come to an end; totally enjoy you and your crew and all your work. Thanks for what you give us.
Let’s just take a moment and digest the story about the boat auction. This is such a fine example of true character! Everybody get on Patreon now and send Leo some of the missing money for the lumber bill.
Love the sailing footage. What a blessing to be young and free.
And a massive thank you to Leo and crew. You are creating a masterpiece before our very eyes.
The fit on all this beautiful timber is amazing. What a piece of art!
1.30am in Bangkok, got a nice cuppa and ready for relaxing with Leo.
Glad you had a quality break from the pressures of boat building and went sailing with friends.
Leo, you are all class, my friend. You are a man of honor in a world where honor is in short supply. Kudos to you and your crew!
Love watching the vintage boat work but that is also a helluva that you delivered.
Nice work and even better, a very nice "escape" . It's good to take time to recharge the soul.
Love seeing your progress and I admire the efforts and quality your putting fourth, she'll be and amazing boat on the water good luck.
i am always amazed how every piece looks like fine furniture..... Such a pleasurer to be able to follow your journey.
Lovely work manship on the mast support and bullheads. Always impressed.
Refreshing to see your calm demeanor and steady hand. BrillIant.
Great video, Leo. Hope you get the import situation resolved. I'll also be making a donation toward the money you sent to Rocking The Boat.
Working holidays are the best kind. Getting a change of pace, doing something you love, and the customer picks up the tab. Enjoy
Thanks for another great video and great sailing shots. Your skill with a camera equals your skill at wood work.
Very kind of you Leo giving 5k to RTB , well done 🏆🏆🏆🏆
I love your videos. To see the work in progress every two weeks, is simply delightful. Can't wait to see how masts are made. Can't believe the highest bidder pulled out; unbelievable. I miss seeing the animals - parrot, dogs, chickens - in your videos: they made your videos so down to earth.
Leo, you're a regular human CNC machine with that chisel and hand planer. Such accuracy! It's a pleasure to watch you work.
Nice way to end the season, as always thank you for sharing the adventure Leo, and crew.
Great to see you taking some time off doing what you love Leo 👍
Wow, that's 2 setbacks in a short period...😞
Kudos to you for your action on 'Rocking the boat'. Yes, It is the right thing to do, but certainly not done by everyone!👏👌
I couldn't cover that if I wanted to. That $5200 is considerably more than half a years income in my household.
(SSI of 782 monthly).

Very clean shaven Pete!
Haha Oh my God! That circular saw at 01:06 makes Leo look like a tiny kid! Can't believe you guys are making mast parts already... And Tally Ho's had a birthday!
OK! Now I understand what 'mast partners' are, I'm a little less surprised at the great leap forwards. I love these vids. As soon as I see one, I watch it immediately!
I'm really saddened a few people let you down on that dinghy. That's really low. I may be cynical, but I don't believe anyone misunderstood anything, they just didn't expect to win - and therefore have to pay
That mast partner has lot of shakes... Do they need dealing with?
@@hydorah I am no expert by any means, but I would think the moisture once it sets sail would swell those shakes shut again.
Even with the deck over it and "sealed", the water will impregnate the entire boat over time, I would think. But as I said, I am no expert. Leo, and others, has said that the hull will swell back up once it is in the water. And it is painted outside and oiled inside. So if the water can get into those boards, wicking action will surely let water and moisture/humidity get to the entire vessel.
@@hydorah it's under compression the whole time, no twisting or flexing so I wouldn't think so.
In a race there is the third, the second, the first and before the first there is the best ! I’m really impressed by the job you give us to see you and your team. All the best Léo !
The frames with the rivets are like art unto themselves. The Tally Ho is truly exquisite.

Aside from the terrific update on the Tally Ho project I have to say that you have captured some simply gorgeous imagery from that trip to deliver the yacht to Annapolis. Your cinematography is getting so much more creative all the time. The accompanying music for that segment was a superb choice to boot. For me, this channel is an absolute joy to watch. I look forward to the same kinds of imagery when you finally finish Tally Ho and venture out onto the high seas.
