  • This is a giant Blackboard DIY that I love. This tutorial gives you the good and bad of making this giant DIY chalkboard . Add fun to a blank wall with Rust-oleum chalkboard paint. You can create a huge fun chalkboard framed as art on the wall. You can also make a framed chalkboard and hang it. I wanted to make a giant chalkboard and opted to frame my chalkboard directly on the wall. It is not very expensive to do so but might take some commitment and elbow grease.
    Rust-oleum Chalkboard paint is inexpensive blackboard paint, but it has some nuances you might want to know about before you get started. You can buy chalkboard paint here: amzn.to/3vZ1a5B
    Here's the kreg Pocket Hole Jig I have (one of the least expensive options): amzn.to/3CD1bfg

    • @BlissHomeGarden
      @BlissHomeGarden  Před rokem

      This is the 3rd time I change it and I’m getting ready to do my 4th design for fall. The dust only happens when I change my design. If you plan on using it daily, yes, you will have chalk dust to worry about. If you use it seasonally like me, you’ll deal with that less often. I just keep a vacuum handy when I re-design. Other than that, I love it and will put up with dust for a couple of days. Hope that helps.

    • @BlissHomeGarden
      @BlissHomeGarden  Před 2 měsíci

      The can is correct. It just paints thin. You’ll notice it’ looks “oily” when you apply it. The product goes a long way though. I didn’t use my entire quart. I have plenty left if I want to touch it up. But I haven’t needed to do that yet. Have fun!

  • @BroodykayBroodyfour
    @BroodykayBroodyfour Před rokem

    I confess I came here to see what size lumber you used for the frame and I haven't started the paining yet so take that into consideration with what advice I have. I was worried about using a roller as most of my work is wipe on or regular brushes and airbrushes so I called my cousin who custom paints everything from walls and cabinets as well as chain stores all over the Canadian east coast. He said the taping and cutting in us the hardest part but where this in nowhere near a corner, ceiling, or lightswitch no cutting in needed lol. First fir a painted or primed wall do it just the way you have tape it up and give it a scuff or with a bare wall or if using a removable chalkboard cut out do any sanding and knot/ blemish filling now and seal the plywood then another quick scuff sand just get rid of the "orange peel" if it feels bumpy but this shouldn't happen it should be smooth. Now with the rollerload it up good you will want to apply lots put to much so it sags or runs then he usually does a big Z sorta stroke to evenly apply the extra where you need at (he also said for a whole wall he would roughly divide in 3 sections doing one at a time so in effect you'll make 3 Zeds across the wall by the time you're done). Now go back to one side and pait up and down in a very slight curve and move right to left ( or vise versa if you are right handed 😂). You don't need a lot of pressure here and after the first swipe near the tape put this pressure more on the side of the roller where the handle attaches (also should have mentioned the handle side needs to be facing the way you are painting. He assures me 4 isn't needed but hey a pro so I might cut that time back a little but not much besides I got other projects, housework, a wife and 5 young "adult" children to keep me busy for several 4 hour coats ha ha. Also again no sanding is needed unless you have stopped long enough for it to cure. He suggested 2-3 coats +1 when using chalk paint and the rest from cuing to installing the border and conditioning goes exactly how you've done it. He suggests the wall paint was too glossy for a base layer but also you weren't using enough paint and were way too erratic with your roller direction causing very thin almost see through areas as well as lines galore. Most of this can be fixed just as you have with extra coats but by doing it the suggested way could save you just on this project enough to make 2 chalkboards for the price of one. pS very beautiful if turned out nice AND you told me what dimensions your border is and it looks perfect so thanks for the great video.....most videos I've seen don't focus in that all

I wiped it completely off when it wiped it off and did another coat of Chalkboard paint And I smoothed off the sharp edges on each side of the chalk.
    But I'm so scared to do it again.Do you have any suggestions?

    • @BlissHomeGarden
      @BlissHomeGarden  Před 2 měsíci

      The very first time I did it, it did leave a small residue behind. I can still see some traces of the first drawing I ever made. I think the first time you cure it is the most important. It gets easier and easier to work with over time. Also, every time I make a new drawing it covers any old residue and it looks fine, no one notices. I’ve done over 15 drawings by now and it still works and looks beautiful. I have not repainted it since the first time. Maybe it’s time to try again, make sure it’s well cured and the first time you draw don’t push too hard. You’ll feel comfortable with how it erases soon enough. Good luck!

    • @BlissHomeGarden
      @BlissHomeGarden  Před rokem

      This is an excellent question! I discovered that there IS black chalk. I haven't tried it, but you've inspired a new video. Very smart. I can't recommend just yet, but here's what I found on amazon: amzn.to/3lxjVde These are larger onyx colored sidewalk chalk. I will also be researching another product to clean the "ghosting" that sometimes occurs. Sometimes when you erase (even if you wet it again), you'll notice a very faint residue of what's been drawn before.

    Would it help to prime the area with a black primer?

    • @BlissHomeGarden
      @BlissHomeGarden  Před rokem +1

      I don't know. I suppose it would give you a better base, but i think you'd still need several coats. I've had my board for almost a year now and I believe it is now at this point that I might need to either add another paint layer or find products that eliminate the "ghosting" left from previous artwork. I've drawn about 6 designs since this video.

      I go to a restaurant that has chalkboards and the owner told me they have to repaint often bc they use chalk markers. I suggest you test them on a corner or something. I like the versatility of regular chalk. I used the rollers for doors and cabinets to apply paint, that's why it was small. Another person commented I might have done better with a regular roller and applied it similar to painting a wall. I have to tell you that we have had a blast. Right now we are doing a Christmas theme with a barn and a truck. I'll post it soon on my instagram page. You'll have so much fun! Go for it!
