In this video, Levy Rosman did not, in fact, neglect the stare. He purposefully removed it to make the statement that all things are finite in this universe, and we should treasure the things we have and the people we love dearly. I give this statement a 10/10 in lieu of the usual stare score
I have actually accidentally discovered this months ago thinking "Imma try doing the Vienna with Black" and nobody expected it, now your video will prepare everyone. Thanks
Dude, I sometimes play London with black (and also switch up move order every now and then). Once people realize what I'm doing they take much longer pauses between moves.
You probably won't see this Levy, but I'm a huge fan of your videos! I'm actually the head instructor at my school's chess club, and my students love you. If you ever have the time, or need an opponent for a video like this, I'd be happy to play! My kids would go berserk and I think they would all pay attention for once, lol. Edit: thx so much for the likes!
I’m around 1150 ELO and I always find it funny how I can prepare effectively against a majority of my opponents simply by studying lines that counter whichever opening Levy has most recently posted a video about. You’re influence is greater than you know, Levy!
You are also winning because people are using whatever is the new flavour of the week instead of sticking to what they practiced for hundreds of games at least.
True. This line shouldn't be played if your opponent has studied it. And which you can't know before getting a game, so these lines shouldn't be played at all beyond a level of 1000-1100. Ofcourse you can play it if you want to stay noobie forever
As a proud owner of E4 New York style, I love how it is literally the Vienna with black. He mentioned the original set up is similar (with white obviously having the extra bishop move), but a lot of the later moves and ideas are really similar
I use the vienna as well and thought the same thing. Only difference is when I play with black I usually do a queens side gambit instead but I'm going to try this instead.

Thank you Levy for theese incredible lessons!

I seriously can't thank you enough for this video. I've been looking for an opening for the black side for like a week now since I saw that I always win in white but rarely win when I'm black. Good thing you made this video and I'll be happy to memorize the lines 😂
Fifty years ago I earned a USCF rating of 1650, but haven't played tournament chess since. I really enjoy your videos and your humor. Learned a lot from you and scraped off some rust. THANX👍
In watching a precious GTE vid, Gotham decried his sub for playing exactly this, saying "I don't know what Gotham Sub is doing. Maybe they think they're playing a Reverse-Vienna Gambit, cuz this is kinda like the Vienna, but this is 'poopy buns.' All this move does is lose a pawn. You can't play the Reverse Vienna; that's not how chess works." A year later he makes a video over this exact gambit. I simply love the fact that we have additional video evidence of Gotham growing as a person. Love all of your vids, GC. (I also just happened to be watching older GTE videos (favorite series on YT, indeed) and recognized the structure of the gambit, having recently watched this video not too long ago.)
Very cool. Good to see some live games with this. I have been watching Igor Smirnov's videos on this opening for the past two days on repeat. There are some nasty nasty traps beyond what you covered here. Very happy to find this gambit for both the italian, and the ruy lopez.
You solved a centuries old game that couldn't be solved for hundreds of years, I clicked on a Gotham Chess video at under 10k views, so I think we are in the same league.
OG fans will recognize this opening where we saw it for the first time. It was on a guess the elo episode where black was playing a reverse Vienna Gambit and Levy was pretty mad at that saying “chess doesnt work like that” 😭😂😂
But in general gambits are only useful at low levels because anyone with some decent experience won't accept them - and that's when most gambit users get totally lost. Like I've seen 500s playing Queen's Gambit - what the hell are you guys doing if you only know first two moves of it?
went from 600 to 1200 just playing this and Vienna The dark bishop pinning the knight to the queen on g5 happens all the time at my level, but I don't recall any times when the knight went there

In case anyone wants to play something similar against the Spanish, that f5 variation is called the Schliemann and it's what IM Andras Toth recommends in his beginner's E4-E5 repertoire on Chessable. There's also an Eric Rosen youtube video on it. Pretty spicy stuff.
The great thing about the Schliemann is it's straightforward. I once tried it in an online simul vs an IM. Like move 9 he says something like "I think Qe2 is good for White here but I don't remember why", which I took as a validation of my opening play having been out of book since move 4.

I’m a fairly new chess student, but want to make a point about bishop to G5. Pinning knights and taking is a (slight) sac for the sake of disrupting pawns. Blacks king side pawns were whacked at the open by pawn to F5 so the bishop sac is not necessary. Maybe the bishop would have been more useful on E3? Or a fianchetto since the light square bishop is also aimed at black’s king side and it’s really up to white whether the center gets opened. Idk.
I havent played chess since middle school. Was always "decent" among my peers but none of us really took it serious. i would usually beat my dad as well. I say all that "irrelevent" stuff because i wish there was someone who could have made LEARNING chess not as boring or job like as your videos, back then. Keep up the great content.
As a King's Gambit player I immediately analyzed the same thing without the knight on C6 and the white bishop out and it turns out its called the Latvian Gambit and the eval is about the same.
I am proud to say that I found a very good that you could have played in the endgame against the 1800 player. When you go Qg4 check and he goes Kh1 ,you could go Rook to f3 threatening to mate in Rh3. And when he took the rook with his own you could take back with queen and do a double fork threatening king and the other rook .
I'm glad I don't need to follow this advice any more, after a couple of good wins I am now rated 9,287 - I play a lot of the London system as white, and as Black I play the Einstein-Rosen defence that actually allows me to move my rooks (and sometimes a bishop) to the 0th or even the -1st rank behind white's pieces, it involves folding space and time, but once you've practiced it a few times, it is easy.
In this video, Levy Rosman did not, in fact, neglect the stare. He purposefully removed it to make the statement that all things are finite in this universe, and we should treasure the things we have and the people we love dearly.
