Hey LT! My wife has a vinyl cutter that can cut thin cardboard, it's called a Cricut Maker. I design my sheet steel pieces and before I have them laser cut I have my wife cut the parts from old cereal boxes and tape them together as a "sort of close" template (taking in to account the thickness differences) but it really works well for flat parts. And she can also cut me vinyl stickers for my cars.

Give fusion 360 a shot if you run into a barrier with sketch up, also consider getting a cheaper 3d printer (like an Ender 3), you can print your mockups before getting them CNC, it'll save you time overall if things don't fit or they need to be changed.

Hi Lawrence, I've been a Mech Eng for coming up on 20 years now, and what you're doing is absolutely Engineering, has been the whole time. People in my field get really finnicky about what is and isn't Engineering, but the bottom line is that it's solving problems.
I love watching your work and follow yours and other builder youtube channels to watch you guys design and build :)
I'd suggest that you may want to consider looking at a SolidWorks Maker licence, they're only around $100 and you'll hit serious limitations with Sketchup pretty soon... It's a fun program, but it's not going to give you the outcomes that a proper parametric CAD program will.
Anyway, I hope that helps and keep on kicking ass :)

I agree with you Drew. I’ve been an ME for 18 years and the amount of technical problem solving I see with LT’s builds is definitely engineering.
I also agree that Solidworks is a better choice given LT’s desires to do modeling and designs similar to the guy he referenced on Instagram.

Thanks for the suggestion on the program, I learned on Unigraphics NX back in school, and I definitely do not love sketch up so I will for sure try solid works. And thanks for watching as well! I do like solving problems as these projects evolve.

    • @drew79s
      @drew79s Před rokem

@@LawrenceTolman I use NX now... Solidworks is sort of like a simplified version of NX, it does the same things, but there aren't as many ways to do things and once you get the hang of it it's much more intuitive than NX... I usually tell people who've come from other CAD platforms to expect not to be happy with their output for at least a month of use after a week long training course... In Solidworks I've seen people getting the hang of it inside a few hours and becoming reasonably proficient on the basics in a couple of days... Nowhere near as powerful as NX, but you're not designing a whole car, part by part, from the ground up ;)
Also, Solidworks has a Sheet Metal function which I think you'll want to learn :)

Fusion 360 is probably the best free option from an affordability standpoint but if you don't want to learn how to do every key shortcut and are in the mood to try some ipad software that can also run on windows and imacs check into Shapr3D. It is able to draw 2d and 3d (in case you want to 3d print anything). It costs about 300 a year but they often have a discount and it is cross platform compatible so you can draw with your finger or a apple pen on an Ipad. Unfortunately there is no Android version, which is a downer. I love it simply because drawing and designing is intuitive with your fingers and you don't have to hold alternate keys or mouse clicks with the CTRL and Alt buttons to rotate and view your drawings. It has a free version that limits your ability to export and files you can save but after doing a couple of drawings I pulled the trigger and the nice thing about it is it saves your drawings on the cloud, you can export them to your desktop device, but you can always reference them from your ipad or imac device as needed.

LT, the more you start producing cut's on metal the more you will realize the cost of SCS starts to add up and you might want to investigate the Arcdroid in the future. It's a big pill to swallow initially but it looks like it is perfect for the home manufacturing process. If you already have a plasma cutter and a welding table it will attach to your welding table and give you a way to cut items in a 26 x 15 inch window, which is really great for a suspension fab setup. They do have a list of cutters that are known to work and the ownwer (Andrew) seems to be providing top notch support and service. I have been on the fence for a while but I am not making anything yet so it's one of those situations where you buy once and cry once in order to invest in your business and I am just not there yet. Hope that gives you some constructive feedback, and also, Get some rest my friend! You looked tired as heck in the first few moments of that video, lol.

You mentioned plating the frame, the best thing you could do is x-brace that so the frame is triangulated, go look at some of the race car chassis how they're done, the reason is so the frame rails don't move independent of one another, this occurs when you pour the coals to it

I found a pre-bent kit from S&W race cars I'm gonna buy, my buddy Brent also used one, it actually will fit pretty good and is 8.50 spec'd

Hey LT, you doing okay? You're looking really tired and worn out in the start of the video.

I really think this build is definitely way above ugly truck I really think u should just build this truck from scratch like you’re already doing I think it would make a bigger statement.

FreeCad is your friend. There are plenty of tutorials on YT that will walk you through it. I’ve designed and 3d printed a couple things (RC rock crawler stuff). It’s pretty nice seeing something that was in you head come to reality.

I am a professional CAD monkey. Dude anything but sketchup! This was painful to watch. I could have drawn and made burn files for those parts in 45 minutes. There are charts online for what clearance holes should be for fasteners. Just send them a 1/2 inch hole if you want a 1/2 inch hole, don't try to out smart them, the laser table is more accurate then you need.

I am gonna get a different software before too long. Any suggestions? And on the hole size thing, I made those undersized on the one bracket since I wasn’t too sure on the measurements I took, so that would allow me to drill through to the exact size and position.

@@LawrenceTolman If I had to do this for free or cheap, I would use freecad then use libreCAD to make dwg/dxf, or I would use onshape which can do dwg/dxf. You are going to be into weldments and will require 3D modeling real soon. You are going to want to learn how to puzzle your engine mounts together with slots/tabs before you weld. This will save you from jigging and set up. Your fabrication abilities will push you far past 2D, that's what happened to me.
