    Will Paterson - some video suggestions if you haven't already made them - rather than a critique, how about discussing sort of key points on what you look for that makes a logo good vs bad? Also, how about a video discussing the challenges of clients that challenge you? (as in don't have a trained eye but want to dissect your work). Just things I think would be interesting to hear your perspective on.

    I really love these kind of "abstract" or geometric logo's. Even making them is so much fun, but its actually not easy to make them to be usefull. I mean, they still have to somehow point to the topic, or company, or feeling it wants to express and i have to tell you a LOT of people and costumers dont see what they should in them, (and lets skip the part where you say "make it better you are just bad", that can be a part of it yes) . And thats just 1 thing, the other is : They dont believe in them, or how much skill it requires to make a good one. So they are going to be reluctant to buy it...especially from a beginner designer....any tips on this? Should i just keep making non abstract ones for years, just because it sells better?

    My first thought was a UK three-pin plug, at a jaunty angle with the live and neutral pins representing the upper and lower bars of the 'E' and the earth pin representing the centre bar of the 'E'. The body of the plug represents the back of the 'E'... The jaunty angle allows the middle bar to be a bit shorter than the other two bars. Also, everyone knows what a plug looks like and associates it immediately with electricity. A second plug rotated through 90 deg could represent an 'M' for the metering part.
    Great video, it's always important to emphasise the importance of drawing (no pun intended) from the words and associated terms and phrases of the company.

    if Im creating a portfolio for uni would it be acceptable to make up a brand and do this sort of thing or would they not like it?

    • @sophie9984
      @sophie9984 Před 7 lety +10

      Hopefully this answer isn't too late, but I wanted to share some advice I have for Uni-Portfolios. I actually tried 2 times to get into the Uni of my choice. My Uni actually gave us the advice, to only show hand-drawn stuff, to get accepted. I'm quite ok in drawing, but I mean, I want to study graphic design, so it was kind of hard for me, to only draw things. I reached in my portfolio and I failed. It wasn't a big surprise, there were around 200 people and only 30 get accepted. The second time I thought to myself, I will risk something and actually show, what I think I'm good at, and this isn't drawing. So I re-designed some Movie-Posters and my hand-drawn-pictures were when I scribbled down some ideas for my graphics, designed a book for children, some corporate design, etc. This time I got accepted and it thougt me, to take a risk sometimes. What I want to say: When you think you burn for logo design, than go for it and make up a brand. But make sure, to show a wide variety of your skills. Good luck with your portfolio!

    How do you know if your design doesn't look like another one and get in trouble for copyright?

    Hey Will, in your opinion whats the difference in value to employers/customers between designers with a Bachelors, Assosciates, Certificate, and Self-Taught? Do they care? What are advantages and disadvantages of each category?
    Thanks.

    I am a complete amateur icon designer (I’m a BI analyst and reporting content manager). I’ve been using PowerPoint (*hangs his head in shame*) since 2010 to create icons for SharePoint and Confluence sites to access reporting assets. I really enjoyed watching your creative process! I subscribed to your channel so I’ll be back to check out more of your videos. Thanks for sharing!

    Out of curiosity, if someone wanted to incorporate an animal design into their logo, how would you address that? And would it be unusual to have two logos, one that is more detailed for say a website, and one that is more simplified for letterheads or business cards? I'm trying to design for my business and the name suggests whimsy and is rather long. Dancing Fox Spiritual Services.

    Can anyone think of characteristics of pins? Like how he thought of lightning for electrical, well I can't think of much that is specific to pins. Help.
