  • Michigan Medicine performed the state’s first spina bifida fetal surgery in 2014 - and today, that baby is a running, dancing, active five-year-old.
Carter Hilton recently celebrated his fifth birthday and started junior kindergarten. He was the first baby in Michigan to undergo a specialized surgery to repair spina bifida - while he was still in the womb.
Since Carter’s case in 2014, Michigan Medicine has performed roughly 20 similar in-utero surgeries that aim to improve long term outcomes for children with the condition.

I´m so touched, this video give me so much hope because I´m also affectet. When I saw Carter I was crying because he walks like me. I thouht I was the only person who can walk whitout splints and whitout crutches. But Carter is a wonderfull person with so much life energy. When I heard the sentence, "the wheelchair is in the garage, because he dosen´t use it" I cried. My mother never give me the chance to use a wheelchair and I´m so thankful for it, she always believed in me. Carters mom reminds me of my mother, thank you and I think you deserve praise for being such a great mother. The world needs more people like you.
Pleace stay safe even if it´s difficult right now. I wish you all the luck in the world.

That must’ve been so scary to get that procedure while pregnant. Bless him! He’s too cute!

I got it a year ago in Houston. Very scary. But the staff helped make me feel more comfortable and safe.

I'm not trying to be negative. However, it is possible that your 2nd child can have it. My younger Sister also had it. As do I. So, it all depends.

Just a little advice: It is great that your Son, can jump around like that. However, I would be very careful about it.
