This was one of the greatest games in this rivalry between these two storied programs, even though my Lions lost this one. I wish we could keep you guys on our schedule like we used to back in the '80s and early '90s. This was always a great hard hitting game. I miss this classic rivalry.
My twin sis worked for the PSU Dean. She would get my dad and i tickets on the PSU 50 yard line. The only ND fans on that side lol. We seen two games. The 36-6 disaster and the 21-20 loss when Rice slipped going for two. Great memories!!
This was my first ever trip to Notre Dame and what a time to make it my first game ever to Notre Dame Stadium. Joe vs Lou. Penn State vs Notre Dame. Future NFL stars on both sides. It doesn`t get any better than this.
i was there. it snowed hard during the 2nd and 3rd qtrs. at the stadium. in the end it was scary for ND. one thing i will never forget is in the parking lot how one penn state fan came up to me and said "man, what a good game we had today". this man has no idea how many years have passed that i learned a new respect for joe paterno and his program. my oldest son calls him "the old man". i say "you got it right buddy"! i may be upset if he's not coaching at 90.
I'm a canadian kid who's been watching and supporting nd for 26years.Rick mier is my favorite player in any sport alltime. This is the greatest game I've ever seen as a fan.And also the best team nd team I've seen to this day. This team would beat any sec team to this day!!!
Classic game between two classy, respectable rivals and head coaches. My dad is an ND fan, he had friends who attended this game and I've heard all the stories about how this would be the last time ND and PSU would play each other on the gridiron. That all changed in 2006, but the way these two teams played, it felt like the end of an era. As a PSU fan, I can honestly say if we were to lose to any team, I would prefer that it would be ND. Gotta give JoePa some love for his smirk at 4:39 haha. He was like "it happens".
Cracks me up too... Paterno loved a good competitor, and that smirk after the Irish went for 2 in a blizzard, instead of going for the tie was respect. You have to remember there was no OT back then. You left it all on the field. The look of: "Damn Lou, that took guts, ya got me."
I was at the game and sat in the last row of the north end zone field seats. Hannah Storm sat next to me and my five year old for much of the game. The video doesn't really show how treacherous the field was, especially in the second half. It was a half frozen sponge. The mob scene on the field after the game was frightening for me with my five year old. A female student helped me get my five year old to safety! All you can say is that it was a great, great game.
This was Pennsylvania State's last season as a Division 1A independent school. They will later join the Big Ten the following year, making the name hardly any sense.
Both teams were loaded with NFL talent. It was PSU’s limbo season before joining a conference and one of PSUs most underachieving teams. PSU joined the B1G in ‘93.
Reggie Brooks. Man, that guy had a tremendous senior season. Was there a better tandem of backs than Bettis and Brooks that year... or any year for that matter.
I was in the field seats for this game, and you can see me in the video at the end when people are piling on the team. (Before the stadium expansion, ND had bleachers below the brick wall that went right up to the edge of the end zone.) It was a crap game from our perspective! We were at field level and all of the scoring drives were at the other end of the field. But we got two great plays at the end that made up for it.
hey i love notre dame. I've been an ND fan since the day I was born. my dad graduated there and just look at the screen name. but penn state is extremely talented and will probably win the rose bowl. this team has potential. and for the list of teams they beat...
Even though it must've been cold as heck, I'm sure it was beautiful watching two titan programs go at it in the snow. I'm sure it was a lot of fun despite the freezing temperatures. BTW, I'm originally from South Bend.
What a boring game UNTIL the last mintues!!! WOW! Classic Ending!! Joe Pa handled it with class!! Hentreich ( spelling?) was one of the best if not THE BEST field goal kicker EVER for Notre Dame in Irish History!!
Penn State was an independent and joined the Big Ten, so scheduling became an issue. Another great match-up that was a casualty of PSU's move to the B10 was Pitt. Notre Dame was #8 and Penn State was #22 at the time of the game.
Coastal Carolina Oregon State Syracuse Temple Illinois Purdue Wisconsin Michigan Ohio State IU Michigan State the losses Iowa Just look at that schedule. Now the Irish just have to win that bowl game! Go Irish!
The main reason OSU got blown out is because their running back Beanie Wells was injured. It would've been a much better game. I never said their schedule compared to Texas or Texas Tech or Alabama's. If you read my last post towards the end I said, "if they played a big 12 team like Texas or Texas Tech or maybe even Oklahoma they would lose." However, by saying Penn State had so many "cream puffs" your virtually calling the Big Ten a joke. and I and many other people would disagree with that.
well they did play both ranked teams MSU and Ohio State and did a pretty good job. Granted, if they played a big 12 team like Texas or Texas Tech or maybe even Oklahoma they would lose.
Rocketshark, id like to apologize for my previous comments, its just i live in central PA, and you have no idea the abuse i take from PSU fans. My brother is a current Sophomore at ND, and my family has been fans since the 50's, and when i see people like phillysportz posting stuff about ND i just get fired up. Anyways hopefully you'll accept my apologizes

So awesome... and I was there, south end zone! Go Irish!☘

I think the coolest thing about that team is none of them were perfect, but as a team they made something great

"...between two classy, respectable rivals and head coaches..."
Very nicely done. Wait, that is sarcasm, right?
Ethan Swiech Not as classy as the Defensive Coordinators!
WOOP WOOP! Mic Drop!
I remember when I had my first beer.
Cracks me up too... Paterno loved a good competitor, and that smirk after the Irish went for 2 in a blizzard, instead of going for the tie was respect. You have to remember there was no OT back then. You left it all on the field.

Joe Paterno is a piece of shit

4:07 sandusky? my god. but yeah Lou vs. Joe, LEGENDARY.
Greatest sr day ever.Thats old school collage football you go for two at home.Great call coach Holtz!!!
If you search "legendsofsouthbend" you'll find videos of Aaron Taylor interviewing former Irish greats during last season, including Mirer.
This was Pennsylvania State's last season as a Division 1A independent school. They will later join the Big Ten the following year, making the name hardly any sense.
Yea they started playing in the B1G in ‘93. 1992 was a limbo season for PSU.
My dad was in that game. Penn state #86
Great series that should have never ended.
good players from both teams. The good players had a great career in the NFL some of them won super bowls
I dunno, Notre Dame had some greats over the years
He played in the nfl for over a decade, not bad.
I was there, damn, that was a great game! Effing cold!! But awesome!
I was in the field seats for this game, and you can see me in the video at the end when people are piling on the team. (Before the stadium expansion, ND had bleachers below the brick wall that went right up to the edge of the end zone.)

LMAO...love the dude wearing the zubas on that Bettis TD celebration.

I loved the faces of the Penn State players after Brooks' two point conversion
Even though it must've been cold as heck, I'm sure it was beautiful watching two titan programs go at it in the snow. I'm sure it was a lot of fun despite the freezing temperatures. BTW, I'm originally from South Bend.
What a boring game
UNTIL the last mintues!!!
WOW!

Joe Pa handled it with class!!
Hentreich ( spelling?)
was one of the best
if not THE BEST field goal kicker EVER
for Notre Dame in Irish History!!
Boring?! Games don’t get any better. Lol
I agree and I'd gladly dump MSU or PU in favor of PSU. ND can at least get excited about playing Penn State.
I hope they play in 2009 season
Penn State was an independent and joined the Big Ten, so scheduling became an issue. Another great match-up that was a casualty of PSU's move to the B10 was Pitt.
Notre Dame was #8 and Penn State was #22 at the time of the game.
I love bad weather games mostly snow games. If anyone can tell me where to find more TY.
Coastal Carolina
Oregon State
Syracuse
Temple
Illinois
Purdue
Wisconsin
Michigan
Ohio State
IU
Michigan State
the losses
Iowa
Just look at that schedule.
Now the Irish just have to win that bowl game!
Go Irish!
Zubaz siting at 3:49!
Notre Dame already had a loss and a tie on their record. They had lost their last 2 games against Penn State.
They had to go for 2.
Shake Down the Thunder !!
Notre Dame aka The Fighting Irish #29er
The main reason OSU got blown out is because their running back Beanie Wells was injured. It would've been a much better game. best game ever...followed by psu - osu '05 and psu - fsu orange bowl '06. i kinda liked the '06 rose bowl too....WE ARE
I don’t think I’d put this as one of the best games ever if you’re a PSU fan lol 😝
I'm a Penn State student but I love Rick Mirer and absolve him of his sins from this game.
I agree and therefore deleted those posts.
Two questions:
1. Why did the Notre Dame/Penn State end around that time?
2. Were either teams ranked heading into this famous Snow Bowl game?
The series is tied 9-9-1. They played every year from 1981-1992 and it basically ended because PSU joined the Big Ten conference.
There were a couple classics endings when they played. 1986, 1987, 1990, 1992.
well they did play both ranked teams MSU and Ohio State and did a pretty good job. Granted, if they played a big 12 team like Texas or Texas Tech or maybe even Oklahoma they would lose.
"THE BUS" BETTIS, great!
Steelers rule football world !!!
@Hunkola how many national titles at PSU? how many at ND?
goddam... kerry collins!!!
Collins didn’t play well. Int on first drive and a fumble on own 14. Missed a lot of open receivers.
Rocketshark, id like to apologize for my previous comments, its just i live in central PA, and you have no idea the abuse i take from PSU fans. yes apparently they wanted more cupcakes besides all of the big 10.
@Hunkola The lions may have won in 1991, but who won this iconic game? Oh that's right the IRISH!!!
GO IRISH
Yes but PSU won in 90 and 91.
PSU really dominated the series from 1981-1992.
Was that before or after Joe Paterno died?
This was 1992. Paterno coached 1966-2011. He died in 2012.
Mirer was a punchline.
So they are a joke because they are the 3rd best conference? What?
IDk who should retire Collins or Favre lmao
I lived in South Bend this season. I hate Notre Dame.
penn state always has a weak non conference sched.
