Rongai: Inside family home where lion jumped perimeter wall and killed a dog

- Joshua Isigi was winding up his day as is the norm on Tuesday evening, when around 10 pm, the dogs in the compound started barking relentlessly. The unusual barking attracted his attention. When he made his way towards the dogs, he was shocked to see a huge lioness already attacking one of the dogs, inside their compound in Olmeut Village, Rongai.
The lioness had scaled up the perimeter wall, jumped into the compound and subdued one of the dogs. The sharp and dangerous teeth had been sunk into the dog’s throat.
Isigi quickly took a metal rod and scratched the iron sheets in a bid to scare the lioness. This trick worked, but the hungry big cat was determined to make away with its kill.
The ease with which that animal gets over the fence and inside that compound is what sends chills through my spine....... It's as if the fence was not even there
My guy's command of Kiswahili is outstanding. Kiswahili sanifu vile inafaa. But yeah, I can't imagine living next to a park with no fences. Hapa solution ni kuhama, and converting your home into an Airbnb.

For those who are saying that the park should be fenced. It's not even possible Because Nairobi National Park's area is 117km². Bigger than Westlands.
How do you fence a constituency?
It's humans who encroached on the park area.
Same way we build on riparian land.
The animals are in their territory and rightfully so.
Forget what KWS is saying.
It's simply not possible.
We humans, are on the wrong.
There was a fence on the rongai side which was broken during the SGR railway construction
Also remember that the whole of rongai is not part of the national park, yet these lions are roaming as far as kiserian.
@@virtualtourist7 The entire Rongai was a wildlife savannah with no human settlement. The demand for land and housing led to encroachment, explaining why we are seeing these animals roaming around. It is their natural habitat and we humans are on the wrong. This pattern is everywhere worldwide even in India I saw a documentary showing how humans are constructing highrise buildings in natural habitats, with cases of lions mauling children increasing
Humans have a right to live here on this earth too. Where do you want these people to go?
I have worked at kws 3 years with my late sister Martha munge I used to stay at kobil but kobil but kws was good when it was being ran by director Michael Mugo wanjau he stayed with us and knew all about the Rongai border

Every human settlement in the world today exists where wild life once existed. Now am not contesting your rationale of fencing, but if Gaza can be fenced, surely the park can be fenced. Otherwise you raise good points.

Thinking of how my friend who stays in Rongai used to take us for evening walks in ole kasasi, am terrified. Never again.

I’m an avid dog lover. Now, it’s a bit surprising that the wall didn’t have spikes on the top. Particularly, considering that overall, the area is known for its insecurity. 🤔
In any case, hope that KWS will do its job, ASAP. It’s already well overdue. Unfortunately, knowing the incompetencies of our agencies, time will tell. 🤨
Sadly, also, we humans are to blame. We are clearly encroaching on our wildlife’s territories - too much.

That's a good plan, but I do not support fencing off an area of the park where greedy people have grabbed land & settled there. These animals have been there for centuries. They have their migrating patterns & routes. They know which routes they have been using for hundreds of years. Let's not interfere with their natural habit.
