High standards again Guylain, I have thought about anything more to add to your description.
This is a song Tuomas wrote below in Finnish
    czcams.com/video/ohYieJwTB3M/video.html
. "Hiljaisen talven lapsi" means "The child of silent winter".
It might have some meaning to Nightwish songs including Ghost Love Score
    Lyrics (translation to English):
Every morning I walk a familiar path
Getting lost, the snow always covers my trail.
Every night I arrive to my doorstep,
With the little match girl I warm my hand.
This could have meaning from Bare Grace Misery, The Little Match Stick Girl comforting him from his sadness
In the Fairytale The Little Match Stick Girl dies with a smile on her face as her Grand mother takes her soul to Heaven.
In The Poet and the Pendulum he dies metaphorically, Naked and Dead with a smile on his face,
    Reborn by Mother and Father
The ocean is now without a shore,
The child of silent winter wanders on.
Only the rain of the earth follows
When he disappears into the silence.
In Deep Silent Complete "deep silent complete, black velvet sea, the sirens are calling for me. The age will say this poet lies, sand on the sea is so dry" So the Siren could be lost forever in the ocean.
Now in Ghost Love Score "the child will be born again that siren carried him to me" If the Siren is lost his innocence is lost forever, it has become silent
so the child of silent winter wanders on
Again in TPATP: "On the shore we sat and hoped, under the same pale moon, whose guiding light chose you, chose you all" maybe this means again that both sides aka the siren Have given up hope of the relationship
Also "Search for Beauty find your shore" He can find love again, He doesnt have to stay lost in the ocean.
You were child of the first snow in me,
Too beautiful to share my world.
I lived my sorrow, made it my beloved:
A warm memory in my dream in the heart of the night.
This could be found in Ghost Love Score, The sirens love bought the innocence back to him
When they were together, But he was the Beast and unworthy of her love
This sad dream he made his world,
It comforts him in the heart of the night. See ghost love score
The ocean is now without a shore,
The child of silent winter wanders on.
Only the rain of the earth follows
When he disappears into the silence.
With someone else's mouth I sing my songs,
My everything I carry to the grave of the cradles.
I melt the coldness, guard myself and await.
I wish I could someday wake up to something else
Than to the shame pierced by a mirror.
    God's creation without a cover.
The unfrozen earth awaits the drowning child.
The ocean is now without a shore,
The child of silent winter wanders on.
Only the rain of the earth follows
When he disappears into the silence.
The ocean is now without a shore,
The child of silent winter wanders on.
The search for my heaven ended with gold and tears.
This last line could have reference to Ever Dream "Turn loose the Heaven within"
Perhaps there was a promise of marriage, The reference to Gold "a band of Gold"
but turned to tears and remained just a dream
Happy New Year to everyone, enjoyed this Nightwish ride with you all

This is a "meta-song" : one song that could help us to understand all the others. Like "Beaty of the Beast". I pinned you, up there, in the comment section, for it is completely new to me, and to most of the fans. Thanks you so much and have a Great New Year!

Thank you for this and may the music of Nightwish be a soothing moment in these difficult times. Happy New Year.

      @@GuylainPrince Hi Guylain.
Once again, I couldn't resist skipping ahead from my chronological trip through your videos (just finished Beauty and the Beast) to see this one. Our interpretations are very much aligned. One thing I would add for consideration. As you say, a love relation with this fusion dynamic is one the "other" would recoil from. I suggest Ghost Love Score is essentially what the Beast is feeling in Beauty and the Beast. As you said in that song's analysis, it is probably not the most pleasant for Beast to be comforted by the Beauty who said "no." I suggest the intolerable state persisting after the Ghost Love Score "reality check" is exactly what Beast is feeling - that resignation to unrewarded and unhealthy devotion.
I further suspect it is Beast's dependency, this expectation of fusion, that is the reason Beauty says "no." Strictly speaking, in Ghost Love Score it is not certain that Beauty/Siren/Angel has said anything at all (it is conceivable she may be completely unaware of the writer's silent devotion), but either way this kind of love relation may well be why Beauty says Beast cannot offer what she needs and reminds him that "however cruel the mirrors of sin" - i.e. whatever you see in yourself that makes you think you are unloveable - "remember beauty is found within" - i.e. that unloveability is in your own head and you just need to find your way clear of your belief in it.
I cannot speak to what psychology Tuomas did or did not intend his characters to possess, but in real life I can easily see how a person whose mirrors of sin tell the person s/he is unloveable would tend to seek the more hunter-style love relation because of the belief that it is the only option available, and that very style is what keeps or drives Beauties away. Perhaps Beauty hoped to remain friends long enough to help Beast shatter his mirrors of sin and ultimately escape the trap of his undying yet thankless devotion and Ghost Love Score-style agony (with another, since Beauty's heart is already occupied).

This is an excellent analysis! However, there is one very minor change to the outgoing chorus. Whereas the first chorus ends with "If you be the one to cut me, I'll bleed forever", the chorus at the end of the song further strengthens your analysis by repeating "You WERE the one to cut me, so I will bleed forever". It's almost hidden if you're not paying attention and most of the online lyric sheets have missed it, but it's clearly there.

Methinks you have hit the nail on the head. My understanding is the same.
The power of songs like this is that they can be related to at a deeper level by the listener and the song becomes personal to them as well, beyond the original meaning by the writer. Such power. For me the ghost is the actual ghost of a lost loved one, for example.

Tarja's version is the epitome of the ever sad masterpiece. The sorrow and sadness will remain forever because of this unfulfilled ghost love. There is no way out.The poet, in his personal life had already dealt with this and was already in a better place as the album Imaginaerum showed. But what was still missing was a singer who could express that change. A very talented and skillful one, who perhaps had dealt with a similar situation in the past and could feel and identify with the song. And here comes Floor.Have you by chance watched any of the amateur videos from the very first concerts just after she joined them back in 2012? When the song reaches it's end,she seems to struggle with her own emotional turmoil and voice and some tears can clearly be seen. The now legendary climax had started to shape,at first it was just a melodic scream before the lyrics were added: "Ouououhhh! My fall... will be for...foor yououou !!! " Voila!! The Floorgasm!! The masterpiece had found it's way out of the never ending sadness. It starts at the second part, where she starts to take total control of the song. A healthily angry reaction starts at "take me,kill me,cure me, bring me home..." When she aggressively 'spits' the ''forgive the adoring beast! " it's obvious: " I'm sick and tired of my self-pity, thus I call my anger to give me strength to fight and overcome my sadness, that has stripped all of my power and energy, to defeat my Burnout! " And then : "Hey,hey, hey, hey!!! " ( Come on people! You can also do it! Wake up and start trying!! ) The anger and the power is even bigger with the realization that the other one will never say " time to never hold our love!! ", so the all-powerful climax comes naturally,an enchantingly beautiful Primal Scream!!! And the joyful and triumphant dancing follows, the celebration of defeating your inner demons! The solution to the greek tragedy has been given and this time the 'Deus ex machina' is the Man (or Woman) himself (or herself)!!! So, in my humble opinion, this incredible interpretation and transformation of the song shows exactly what Tuomas said: "She is the One" (singer of Nightwish) and that "She added dedication, motivation and charisma to the band" and that "she stands her ground" thus becoming the catalyst for the 'joyful/optimistic' turn in Endless Forms Most Beautiful. But we'll talk further about these things at Fall,I hope.
    Greetings from Greece.Have a great 2021 everyone!

@@GuylainPrince thank you. Some knowledge from psychology also contributed to my interpretation. Sadness, sorrow and eventually depression literally drain the body of its energy. Then,if our "psychic organism" reacts positively, it triggers the sentiments that generate energy: anger and/or joy. And since it's difficult & rare to go straight from depression to joy, it's usually the anger (towards negative situations, not towards our fellow humans) that does the job, provides the power and help us out of the immobility. Then,if we succeed in our goals, comes the joy along with more energy.

I just want to point two small details...1. It's common belief that the siren/angel - the muse of Tuomas's writing is actually Tarja (can you imagine being in a band with her as a integral part that is building a massive global success hence Tuomas need to be close to her all the time while struggling severely on an emotional level) 2. Floor "suffers" from strong empathy (An 'Empath' and she expressed that few times already) - can feel and understand human emotions deeply taking them on herself and i guess that is taxing and painful sometimes - i am referring this to connect on George's thoughts that she quite well know and feel the complete background of this score and lyrics as she is connecting deeply as an empath on this whole story. On a side note i can't wait the streaming concert in March for Human :||: Nature to see them live :) Happy holidays and keep safe!

Once again, you give me new things to think about. My early take on the song was that it was a reflection on a deeply loving relationship where one partner had died, and the survivor is having trouble coping with the grief.
It could also be literally a fantasy/mythological story of a human being entrapped and later cast aside by a siren.
It's interesting that the very first verse, in addition to the meaning you've outlined, also works as a simple poetic metaphor for living together. It focusses on the simplicity of spending nights together in peace and calm compared to the hustle and bustle of the day. We all know that Tuomas _adores_ ocean metaphors - they crop up everywhere.

    Dear Guylain,
Thank you for the wonderful journey through Nightwish songs. I only discovered you about 2 weeks ago though someone commenting on “Shoemaker” referring to you for an excellent explanation of the “laudato si” reference. Since then, you have entered the close circle of CZcams reactors that I consider add real value in their reaction to Nightwish songs (the others IMHO being Chase Carneson for composition, Julia Nilon and The Charismatic Voice both for voice analyses and TanktheTech for tech stuff). As such, I find it very fitting that, as others already mentioned here, you got “knighted” though a DrawTheAwe video by edojan.
Now as for your great analyses, I have one comment to make regarding the comparison of the different versions of Ghost Love Score. I agree that the choir part missing (or being barely audible) in the Floor version goes against the full understanding of the song. However, I think it is necessary for the song to work live. I for example find that the Tarja live version of the song doesn’t work ell because it feels wrong that in a live concert, the climax of a song is a recorded choir. (Now if they made a live concert with full orchestra and choir like EPICA once did …). They did a similar thing with “Song of myself”. The live version of that song is one more of the highlights of the Wacken concert. However, if you listen to the studio version, it is like a different song. There is a spoken part at the end of the song that is similarly in length as the song itself and gives real meaning to the song. However, that spoken part is simply too long to feature in a live concert,.

Like so many times you have put into words the way I feel/think about a song. I saw your comment a little below to the suggestion that this was based on the relation between Tarja and Tuomas. How well to start the New Year? Great song and great analysis! Knowing the lyrics, the history of the band and the other songs, I was expecting which direction you would go, but the way you did it made me feel like I was discovering the song for the first time. Great job!
I would like to point out two things. The first is the interpretation that Nightwish is the "child", the fruit of this described love. I never thought that, but it makes sense, especially when I know what was before and after. I don't think Tuomas thought that when he wrote it - neither did you - but as one of the possible interpretations? - of course, after all, in a way it is!
And the second thing - you said that such a relationship of two people as described has no chance of actually surviving. This is a very important statement and very true! It seems obvious, but someone who has already experienced a lot and has seen a lot can say it. Contrary to appearances, such a situation is not that rare - among my friends, I know two such. But if you are a young boy or girl, you don't think that way. Someone said, "watch your dreams because they can come true." It doesn't seem to make sense, but sometimes it does - like here.
So if someone who is in this situation today listens to your analysis, maybe he will reflect on it - he will look from a different perspective. If he does, it will save himself a lot of pain and disappointment. I think it is very important what you said.
Well - we break one journey, start another - Happy New Year and see you!

We can differentiate the real from the passion utterly within. It can be a terryfying moment that will not end in closure. Being caught in a web and how our fragile state can become poisonous. A spell from the Siren/Ghost/Phanton/Spirit becoming a beast and spellbound by our behaviour. Denial falling into a misery. No fighting back forever into a stasis. I needed this thorough research and interpretation very badly, because parts of the song has for a long time been unclear to me. That's no longer the case. Your explanation makes sense. It's indeed a very dramatic song, as you call it a 'fusion song'. I now also understand why and how Foor is still able to perform this song (in the presence of Thomas). Off course because the fans still wanted the hear it, but also because they changed the lyrics. Thanks again for the great analysis. During your interpretation of the 3th paragraph the line “Music is my first love ... and it will be my last” came to my mind. So the idea that nightwish is the child also was in my mind. Is this song indicating the change the band was going through? No longer being what it was and Tuomas losing his “muse” and inspiration. This could well mean the end of the band. For me this also explains why Tarja is leaving the stage after singing with the choir continuing. We can only be happy that this was not the end and that Tuomas found new inspiration. Floor had a similar experience - i think - when After Forever ended and also having a burn out. They both found a way to continu and that would mean that they can not perform the song the way it was originally intended. And this gave us the glorious ending of Floor.

I managed to catch a pretty bunch of perch. For me this song is not so much about lyrics. It's a love song about a "ghost" love. It has a "score" like sectioned structure, which can be understand the sections of an relationship. Or something like that. And yes, the choir is more up in the studio version. But l don't care much about these things. For me this song is the best represented always by the Wacken 2013 performance. It's perfect in every possible way. When l saw it the first time, l immediately fell in love with Floor (platonic of course 😅) and since then l've followed all of her doings like a Ghost and loved them all ⛄💗👸. • @davidcoyne7291
    @davidcoyne7291 Před 3 lety

As usual you have excelled yourself with this explanation Guylain.
Lyric wise this is a very difficult song to dissect because as usual Tuomas muddies the meaning somewhat in order to add some mystery.
I followed your lead throughout the video and i had some thoughts of my own along the way which may or may not be correct but maybe people will enjoy my take on the meaning of some sections.
I usually take it as a given that when Tuomas mentions the ocean/the deep/the sea we are talking about a metaphor for thought or the place where dreams and ideas are born. Where else could inspirations come from other than the depths/oceans of ones soul. it is psychologically inexplicable where ideas come from other than to imagine them bubbling up from the very depts of our being. In his understanding the Poet is aware that his inner self contains things that are extremely dark, mysterious and deep as well as beautiful.
The Siren in mythology is a deceiver who sings a song of love to unwary sailors and those sailors eventually ship wreck and are enslaved by her (Homers Odyssey). So here we have the though that all may not be as it seems with this desired new love and this caution creates doubt.
The Child being born again is Tuomas i would guess which would be a rebirth from the song Dead Boys poem. Maybe he is born again because of the new love. The next line calls the child 'he' which is singular so maybe its not about the band as such.
What to make of the line 'sitting on the shoulders of an angel; usually the guardian angel is said to sit on our shoulder whispering truth in our ear. Here the roles are reversed and he is ignoring the angels advice and listening to the Siren or his own desire.
Relive the old sin of Adam and Eve.
I don't think this is a sexual reference. They lost their innocence because once they ate the fruit they became aware of good and evil. The protection of the garden of Eden was removed and they saw the world for what it was, harsh, unforgiving and full of sorrow. Eve only received that name from Adam after they were expelled from the garden. Eve means 'life-spring' because from her all other humans would be born. Before that Adam named her 'Ishah' (my other self in Hebrew) and Adam (God named him 'Adam' which means 'red earth' because that is what he was made from) was 'Ish' (myself or me in Hebrew).
So i would guess that in this verse there is an inevitable expectation that any relationship will sour over time and the dream like state of first love is replaced with the harsh reality of normal life.
The 'Fall' of Adam and Eve is referenced in the chorus too. My fall will be for you...
It kind of takes the love theme to the most epic proportions when you twin yourself with the most destructive couple in history or myth.
I think the whole song is about the imagined perfect love we all yearn for but tempered by the understanding that human nature is flawed and eventually that love will fade or die.
I doubt any of it is autobiographical but some fans will only have thoughts for Tarja
No matter, Tuomas is clever enough in his writing to suck in the listener and make each one of us feel the song is in some part about anything we would like it to be.
The vision for the music has gone beyond merely writing a good song. At this point in their career Nightwish have become epic.

Thank you very much for your insights. Since there is this idea of "to cut me", once in the future and the ither in the past (an event forseen and an event now in the past), I suggest that the other - indeed- made a cut. Lived aa a pain by the adoring beast. As for the Adam and Eve part, I know perfectly well the biblical value of the text (I even said that it is not taken in this sense, sadly) because the context of the song goes more in the "commonly understood" reading. With the two allusions associated of "being in bed", I do not think it can be interpreted in general terms. As for the "loves", for now, I would stick to my reading, just because, by nature, one first love brings others. I LOVED your comments. Very stimulating !

The poet and the pendulum'' : ''You have such ocean's within''..Tantos océanos, tantas emociones.

In the song "Dead Boys Poem" there is the lyrical line "The sweet piano writing down my life". If I associate this line with "ghost love score" and if you know what will happen later (I mean the hard break with Tarja) then I understand what is meant by this song.

from the album "endless forms most beautiful"
      - shudder before the beautiful (live wembly 2016)
      - weak fantasy (live wembly 2016 with a great intro from drummer Kai)
      - the greatest show on earth (live tampere 2015, the biggest of all nightwish songs)

I get a sense of separation from this song, both natural drift and willful. A sense of being puled in a direction that one does not want to go, losing the path, like twins who once did everything together but now seek their own paths. They have drifted apart pursuing their own dreams on the ocean of possibilities the bond they shared is the siren call. The dreams are too disparate, however leading to a separation. Rather than face the pain of being separated by the other it seems they are contemplating cutting the bond on their own agonizing in its own right but more bearable than if the other had cut them.
I've read in a lot of the comments about romantic love, but to me at least it feels more like familial love, the twins. I've known twins and almost all of the time I've found they have a bond like no other and when fission occurs in that relationship, for any temporary or permanent reason, it is palpable to all around them. I will go back to the overall theme that I mentioned before, "Once" seems to be a cathartic pre-grieving of a coming separation (granted I am looking at this with the benefit of hindsight). Even the album artwork of a weeping angel seems to indicate an end. Knowledge and the loss of innocence of the dream that had been Nightwish. To be born anew.
A great first half, I'll keep poking my head in for songs of interest to me over the next few months and see you and everyone else for sure in the fall.

On vit une époque où tout est jetable, y compris les sentiments, malheureusement la recherche d'un amour durable peut aboutir à ce genre de dérive. You are the one to cut me,so I will bleed forever!!!!
This is the last verse quite different from the others before and repeated again and again until the song ending!!
So Tuomas said to the siren that he will bleeding forever after her rejection.
Maybe in the new Floor's version Tuomas wanted to change the end of the song for his own profit, because he is not bleeding anymore,he is fine and those verses lost the real meaning
    after years. It's a thought 😉.
So in my opinion, the good romadic times in the blue waters, passed away and he the poet(Tuomas himself) have the memories of a not complete love with a no happy ending.
We realize the time who the song written, the siren was already married and happy, she was next to him because she sing the songs who the poet wrote for her, nothing else can help the poet to have a dream,
he lives painful days, those emotions help him only to write powerful emotional songs.
It's the end of an era of course and Tuomas knew that they will be not other album with her,he knew well that this album will be their last together,so he put all his emotions and his anger in Once album's songs.
So it's a top album for NW,as i called before the Everest.
The ghost love score is above all the songs, together with the beauty of the beast and the poet and the pendulum. Each one of the three great albums century child, ONCE and DPP. My trilogy of big emotional songs who conecte each other!!
Studio version and Tarja's live version it will be always amazing because the ending of the old era but Floor's version will be always great from the beginning of a new era.

That's one way to put in the last part. Dark days becoming clearer. Like I said I will not entertain my thoughts on the situation between Tarja and Tuomas. The poet writes for the music it comes from many places and feelings may come up from the beneath. The pain will follow elsewhere as we shall see in the Fall of 2021. To me DPP is darker than Once for obvious reasons....Healing process can be very long and sometimes the wound never comes back to normal. You can go into another direction. Everest, Olympus I am still torn on this. TPATP will be the first landmark of the new era. DPP had to be done even with the misteps and the problems they had with each other. We will have much to talk about in time. Tarja I am one with the song. Floor I am liberating you and maybe me from a state of paralysis. Like Kierkegaard said : Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards. Like I said many times let the spirit of Athena guide us in these unfortunate moments. Happy New Year to you Anastasia!Hihihi!

Of course the DPP is dark album,i agree to that, for years i believed that it was the most darkness of all, you must believe me but same Tuomas said years after that for him his most darkest album was the century child and i must believe him,he knows better.
For me century child and Once with Tarja and DPP with Annete were dark and more emotional.
In my mind century child was the most personal,he started to loose his love, she is in a new relishionship but he still has hopes.
In Once album he lost her complete and he has thoughts to put her out of the band and in DPP he is free from Tarja but he still suffer from the way who dismissed her and for his bad behaviour also has few revenge for Marcelo most.
So in my opinion those three are his most emotional albums.
It's the peaks of the top mountains 🤣
The once is the Everest, the century child is K2 and DPP is Kanchenjunga.
The three first albums have more romantic atmospheres and the latest three are all about has insite Tuomas's like a person, his feelings for the planet earth and his love for science and imagination.

I think the "ghost" is the idealised imaginary perfect partner that I believe most people have in their dreams (oceans away from wakeful day!), at least in youth or adolescence, not any actual person.
That ghost interferes (or at least, can) with potential real-life relationships as a "siren from the deep", calling people away from others just because they don't match up to that imaginary ideal. If we continue to give in to that siren, we will never heal (bleed forever) but it is always there, trying to call us away from good and loving relationships, and if we allow it to, will be our undoing (my fall will be for you).

Well, songs are very much the one thing that will always outlive the composer. Mozarts classics as much as those of Elvis or the Beatles. And quite often, over time, their bravado overshines the less-than-perfect person who wrote them.
The Child, sung about in this song is also a looking-back to Century Child and End of all Hope from the album Century Child.
And I think the Child is indeed the innocence we had that is carried over into adulthood, when we ourselves look at children, thinking back into those easier days and suddenly find ourselves as parents. We are (re)born again, reinvigorated.
First of them true loves is one of those very intriguing things. Did you know that the ancient Greeks knew of 6 different forms of love? Eros was the love that is both physical and emotional, basically the stereotype of romantic love (from which we have the word erotic). Then there is Ludus, a love-game of conquest and dominance, often with more than one partner. Storge is the affectionate love that grows over time from friendship. Mania is the obsesive, demanding, fanatic love. Pragma is the love driven by the head and not the heart (pragmatism!). And lastly we have Agape, the selfless, spiritual and altruistic love.
So, which of them trues loves shall it be? Which may be the first? By alphabetic-lettering Agape, by intensity Mania, by the starting point most likely Storge..... I think all can be the first....
I like your idea of the Child representing the band itself. It adds another layer to a few songs of them and to this song in particular.
Bridge 1 is really well thought out. To me, the lines have the meaning of being lost due to a sudden breakup, especially the Lost path before me. The line the one behind will lead me reminds me, by the way, to Alice in Wonderland, where the Cheshire Cat says that ti Alice when she is lost after the dog wiped the path away (at least that's what the cat says in German).
Bridge 2 reinforces that view actually. Both lines basically give way to the song Romanticide.
