POV of a Northern Ireland Coastal Gem (and I'd never even heard of it!) Welcome to The Gobbins...

- During my dash around the UK capitals, I had a bit of time in Belfast so ended up booking a last-minute guided walk out on the Antrim coast. And boy am I glad I made the effort. Due to me trying to stay on my feet, I decided to film this as a 'point of view' style video. I hope it'll give you a good idea of what's involved if it's something you're considering yourself. And if you're not, well, enjoy it anyway, it's a beautiful path!
I toured The Gobbins on 30th March 2023

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

Brilliant video Steve. The Gobbins path was constructed as a tourist attraction over 100 years ago before falling into disrepair. I can remember going down to it in the 70's when we stayed at a rented cottage that my grandparents had a few miles away, but you could only go a little way on it. We spent all summer down on Islandmagee and it was the best place to be a kid. Theres a walk from Whitehead station along the seafront to the lighthouse that is a lovely walk too and not that far from the Gobbins. One thing you didnt seem to do was go into the Rinkha and have an ice cream which is a home made recipe and imo the best ice cream going...but im biased lol
Amazing info but sound like I missed a trick with the ice cream! It was well deserved too!
Steve missed out by not getting ice cream in the Rinkha😂. Another great video though👍
Pretty much what I was going to say blackhead path and Rhinka ice cream
Wow! What a spectacular coastal cliff walk. They did an awesome job setting up that trail and it looks well worth the detour to visit.
Aye, very last-minute decision, but a good one!
I noticed the pitons in the rock face all along so they have a backup plan when stuff happens.
Wow - fabulous video. I've lived in NI for eleven years now and honestly thought that tubular bridge was all there was to it - I had no idea! Definitely on the list now. Many thanks.
It's such a cool trail, well worth it (especially on a nice day!)
An awesome walk. The view out to sea is spectacular as long as you can negotiate the twisting and turning pathway. I'd be frightened of having a panic attack so thanks for completing the walk for me Steve.
Cheers Thomas! :)
Another excellent video. You're really making me view Northern Ireland in a different way. It's so much more than just the troubles, and another great place to visit on these fair isles. Must get there at some point and I got a lot of ideas of where to go thanks to you Steve.
I must admit, my first trip outside Belfast when I went to Rathlin was a real eye-opener! NI is STUNNING!!!
Reminds me more of the Dumfries and Ayrshire coast than the Fife Coast. Looks fab - I love these wee trips to N. Ireland.
I am ashamed to say I have never visited any part of Ireland, and considering Northern Ireland is, as at the time of writing, part of the same country as I live in, I am particularly ashamed.
You've shown many wonderful parts of Northern Ireland in various videos, and this one makes me want to go there more than ever.
I am sure I can persuade my wife and kids that it's a great idea.
Thanks.
I hope you make the trip Nigel, I'm sure you'd all love it :)
ferry muchos cheap if foot passenger - JUST DO IT :)
Great video, Steve. I saw this on TV a few years ago, and then promptly forgot about it. I wonder how the walk would have been a century ago before Health & Safety insisted on hard hats, fences and grip bars. Cool stuff.
Haha you're right Scott! I must admit I banged my head a couple of times! :)
Keep meaning to get out to the Goblins. You can avoid the walk to York gate though and just go from the centre of town as it's the same line.
This was very cool! … and you captured with video at the same time 👍🤭😇🍀👍👍👍
The POV style meant less gabbin and more Gobbin... Brilliant video Steve. If you ever venture westward, The Marble Arch Caves in Fermanagh might be of interest to you. You could combine it with Cuilcagh Mountain Boardwalk Trail also nicknamed the Stairway to Heaven Walk. Both of these are must does for visitors to Fermanagh. Might be van job though, public transport is limited "west of the Bann"
And a boat trip on Lough Erne
Oh thanks so much for all of this!!!
If you can give some tentative hours for buses, I might be interested as well (I don't have a driving licence). And some recommendations on where to stay... I have free train travel, but buses are not too expensive, so...
@@barvdw
There are hourly buses from the international airport and I'm pretty sure it's the same from the city, I think it's Ulsterbus number 261. Either would be less than 2 hours travel time.
Belmore court motel in Enniskillen would be a budget friendly base, don't be fooled by the name, I've stayed in worse hotels for 3 times the price. The owner Terry will be extremely welcoming. If you're set on a hotel, the Manor house or Killhevlin. Plenty of Airbnb options too.
Plenty to keep you busy around the county town. Couple of beautiful national trust houses, Florencecourt, Castlecoole and Castle Archdale. Enniskillen castle, Devenish Island and a pint of G in the beautiful Victorian era pub, Blakes of the hollow.
The stairs are a must visit
Wow! That looked exhilarating whilst safe. Thanks for sharing yet another place I'd never heard of. These videos are what make your channel stand out against other travel-type ones.
Challenge for you 2. Jacobs Ladder on St Helena 😂
OMG you are talking dream destinations now!!!
Ah, the Sweet Gobbins! Interesting information on where we were going and how to get there. I loved the play of the light from the sea against the black stones. It was almost like we were fairies flitting about! Wonderful walk and talk! Merry Ann from Minnesota
Haha yes! Well said Merry Ann! :)
Yay! You're back in Northern Ireland and at the lovely north coast, too. 25+ trips to NI and I haven't done The Gobbins Path yet and, I think with my knee issue, it won't be happening for me so I'm super happy you took us along with you. Most of our trips to NI we use public transit and (knock wood!) have found it clean and efficient. We haven't done the Belfast to the Causeway train journey yet which is supposed to be gorgeous. Glad you had a great time. PS we don't talk about PO ferries either, we're Stena people. :) - Sandi & Greg H.
Great to hear it! :) What an awesome coastline NI has eh? I'll never get there 25 times though I fear!
An interesting tourist walk with the bridges etc. I was born in Belfast but never knew much about it. Went to sea at 15 and drifted away, eventually to Oz, nearly 60 years here now. As always, I love your vids. Steve. Cheers.
That's a long drift mate! :D
I'm from Northern Ireland. And i have to say that Scotland and Northern Ireland are very similar. The people, the scenery and of course who could forget, the weather.
Haha too true mate!
Exactly a year ago today I got home from a visit to Scotland and flew home from Aberdeen. Since then I have watched your channel for more vicarious enjoyment of the Scottish breakfast, baked beans from a Heinz can notwithstanding, which I fear would shorten my heretofore unremarkable life. So I think the Scottish Breakfast is best enjoyed when I can watch you taking one for the Team! At the 4:30 mark of this one, I almost got heart palpitations in the expectation I would also experience if there was such a thing as an 'Irish Breakfast'. As I paused the video to pen this comment, I shall now carry on, enjoying it whatever may come. More breakfast cameo's please!
Haha I must admit I'm not even sure what some of the things are in an Irish Breakfast :D
Amazing. I’ve never done the Gobbins and now it’s on my to do list. Oh and you should have gone into the Rhinka for an ice cream!!
Oh a few folks have said that - missed opportunity! :(
That’s the most Belfast voice I’ve heard in my life and I live in Belfast
WOW!👍🏼
Fit,how you made all this way!Great video!
Big Respect!
Keep on…🙋🏻♂️
That is an amazing path! The setting is just breathtaking. Thanks for showing it to us! Great video!
My old joints are aching watching your ups and downs.😂👍
I need a rest!
Great video , Northern Ireland is firmly on my bucket list. Was intrigued by your comment about P and O ferries though. Maybe I missed previous comments about them or a bad experience you had with them but I’m suspecting it maybe to do with the appalling way they treated their employees recently
They sacked their employees without any notice. I'll never use then.
@@clareclark6535 well said! Me too
@@grandadontour1963 stena for me for NI :)
Yeah, they lost me as a customer!
@steve-marsh exactly. Glad last time I used them was 5 years ago. I'm going across the Irish sea again in September, stena to Belfast.
Oh wow Steve, ah sorry Lord Marsh the Gobbins are beautiful!!
Thank you for the correction! :D
Well Done Steve! I was rhythm guitar for a local 'Irish' band in Peterborough, Ontario and couldn't help notice the brilliant soundtrack in this video.....Who are these guys? Brings back old memories of really fast chording and keeping up with some blazing fiddles! BTW our old band was called.......Fyd-L-Styx......!
I’m so glad you took us along. Seeing your POV is going to have to be it for me…all those stairs would be impossible with my creaky knees!
I do love how you pack in everything you can during a stopover. Thanks, and ATB
Cheers Erin! Glad I had time to pop out here, but it made for a tiring continuation of the 'UK Capitals Tour' afterwards :D
Been waiting for this one, Steve and delighted you enjoyed it...I used to fish lobsters off those cliffs and come from the town just before you got off at Ballycarry. But can't believe you didn't stop for the BEST ice-cream in the world at The Rinkha!! PS to save the walk out to Yorkgate, just walk to Lanyon Place station from the City...the trains go straight through to Larne from there too. Bring on the next vid :)
Cheers Richard! I have NO IDEA why google maps decided to take me to Yorkgate! I was right back into Lanyon on the return journey! And yes, I see I made a massive mistake walking past that ice cream, oh well, I guess I need to go back...
That was brilliant Steve. What an amazing place and thank you for showing us another incredible walk that would be otherwise off the beaten track for many of us. Great stuff 👍
Cheers Davey! Love finding places like this !
Great a midweek video and an awesome walk, thanks Steve. Sadly it's beyond me now so cheers for taking us along with you.
Cheers for accompanying me :)
I couldn't even attempt this hike, I'm too old and out of shape. So thank you for the next best thing, I really enjoyed it! Also, the music was quite good! Thanks again!
Cheers for coming along Patti!
AHH the old Rinkha dance hall where many big names would have played.
It's nowadays a very popular shop and ice cream vendor.
Used to work as driving instructor in Carrickfergus, Whitehead and Larne.
Ohhh good bit of history there, cheers!
I LOVE THE GOBBINS
Things like this are little nuggets of youtube gold. And to think it only came about by having a few hours to spare between journeys. This is the glory of travel and exploration.
So true! I've been guilty in the past of maybe just sitting around bored waiting for the next connection, but this is the way to spend a few spare hours eh! :)
I actually did the Elie Chainwalk after seeing your vid a couple of years ago. Can't believe I didn't think to suggest the Gobbins to you then! Interesting to see they've still not opened up the whole thing - we turned around at the same spot a few years back too. Well worth the trip though 🙂
Well done on the chain walk, but this is another level eh!
Steve, thanks so much for sharing this amazing POV video! I live a little bit up the coast from The Gobbins in Carrickfergus and it's a place I always wanted to visit. Unfortunately as I have MS I would not be able to do the walk but this morning I was able to take the journey through your eyes and it was awesome 🙏
So glad you came along with me Elaine! I have many more adventures to do on your wonderful coastline!
Amazing video mate! Definitely trying this in the summer when we’re over in NI after seeing this.
Islandmagee is a little gem of a place, Browns Bay (on the sign at 3:44) is a lovely sandy bay and Ballylumford close by is a great place to watch Larne Port!
Oh cheers for the info! I hear I missed a cracking ice cream though :(
That trail was definitely an engineering marvel! What a beauty! Thanks for taking us with you.
An absolute pleasure Doug!
What a lovely walk that would have been quite a challenge to build that I would think
Aye especially back in the day!
Loved it. A bit hairy scary in parts. Thanks for taking us. I don’t think I’d have much chance of doing it in real life!
Interesting spot, but looked like a bit of a Tough Trail. Thanks for another informative Adventure!
I was so tired after this :D
Great video, we did it last week but because of the waves only got as far as 10.40 on your timeline. The rest was closed due to elf n safety! We had the same guide as you. A few days before we did the Stairway to Heaven in Fermanagh, clocked about 7 and a half miles in just over 4 hours.
I've been living here in NI for allmost 15 years and you could not have chosen a better day for your video. Brilliantly done
definitely this was a "better you than me, mate" experience, especially when you had to re-do the whole thing without a loop! But fun to see!
Aye a loop would really improve it no end!
Good'un or should I say another good'un. Thank you for that insight into somewhere I have never been to.
Cheers Ray! I'd never even heard of it!
Great stuff! I lived in Larne for a couple of years in the early 2000s. I had no idea this existed 😂 I stopped in Whitehead on the stop before yours often though - nice chip shop and a railway museum (and I see both still exist)!
Excellent Steve, you made me feel as if I was walking with you. It was lovely to see what the Gobbins was really like, must admit I have never heard of before. Thank you for your hard work and I really did enjoy❤
Hey thanks so much for coming along! This was a tricky one to film!
So grateful for this channels videos. 🙏🏼
Hey really appreciate it!
Awesome video!
Thank you bringing me along, while on my sofa.
Love the engineering and construction of this trail , the catwalks, bridges and tunnels are just amazing !
The music is awesome also, Gabriella Quevedo?
Myself also, I was looking at the construction and the ingenuity of the catwalks and bridges. Yes the tunnel was incredible looking! Really interesting and scenic video, well worth a visit by all accounts 👍🌀🐾
Amazing trail!😊
I'd never heard of it either, Steve. A fascinating place and a real challenge for the legs.
Aye these wee tours keep the legs working :)
Nice one Steve, like the Camino del Ray, only in Northern Ireland and by the sea. Unlike the Camino del Ray, I reckon I’d give this a go. Thought about it last time I was over there but never got round to it. Thanks for reminding me 😊👍
Cheers Mark! And well done on the subs!
Found you a few weeks ago and I've been addicted to watching. First time I've commented. The Gobbins are amazing ! I live in a small tourist town in SW Colorado, USA and don't get out of the mountains too often. Watching your travels has been a breath of fresh air and good way for me to arm chair travel during the winter months ! Thank you for all the work that goes into what you do. Much appreciated ~
Gave me some vibes of your Camino del Rey video, and that is one of my favourite videos of yours. Cheers!
Aye! I just wish Alicja had been there with me!
Wow! Scary!!! With a roooooler coaster ride back. As I said to my little dog, "Nico, I guess we aren't in Denmark anymore." Thanks again, Steve, for taking me places I would have never found/dared otherwise! Whew!!!!
Haha thanks Marti!
Great video! Used to live in Ballycarry but moved away not long after the visitor centre had opened so never did (or fancied) the Gobbins. You missed out getting an ice cream from the Rinkha though - lovely stuff!
Aye I hear this! :(
Wow, that was epic! What a masterpiece of engineering - just enough danger to give it a bit of spice, but totally safe. One thing I have learned is that you can either look at the view, or watch where you put your feet, to try to do both at the same time is disaster.
YES! It's always a tough choice :D
Hi Steve, yet another interesting blog, it so happens this is where our great grandfather lived, he use to steal sea gulls eggs from the cliffs, thankyou for showing us this area, cheers
Cheers James!
@SteveMarsh ,was speaking to my mother, history go's, that they use to throw witch's off the cliffs there as well, got a full run down of her as a child there , I sometimes wonder what my childhood would be like if my parents never emigrated to Australia,
Anyway enjoying all your blogs from a past, cheers
Blimey! I thought I'd done the N.I coast but never heard of that place. I don't actually think I could do it...I can't got thru the Wookey Hole caves! Thanks for that Steve cos not somewhere I will ever go now. Another brilliant vid. I tried to watch another vlogger visit a Scottish Island & was not a patch on yours! Your photography & editing is really very good.
a beautiful walk
Brilliant video Steve. I'd never heard of this so will definitely do next time I'm over. Looks excellent.
It was a fun tour, great guides, but tricky to film and do at the same time!
Great video, well worth a visit. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
Thanks Margaret!
WOW that was an incredible walk. Better you than me. I’m too old now for such things. Take care. Cheers
Thanks Beth, a lovely coastline!
A very interesting and different location.
Well done for all the variety of places you go to.
Cheers Dougie!
Awesome walk! I did this years ago (so many years ago), love it. Good to see it's there and in good fettle.
Aye it's a fun wee walk eh!?
I thought I was reasonably well travelled but had never heard of this walk!! Outstanding... Not sure it's somewhere I could manage at the moment.... but imagine it back in the day when there were no railings !! Glad you don't P& O ferries (!) So wrong..
Cheers Richard! Aye, P&O won't be seeing me as a passenger anytime soon!
That was simply magnificent! I was worn out at the end of it - had to go for a lie down!
Cheers Peter! You could see by my face at the end how tired I was, so Im glad I had a ferry cabin that night!
Fab video Steve! I love seeing this kind of thing as I'd never be able to do it myself! I enjoyed the POV, although I missed your commentary throughout!
Thanks Bets! I had other things on my mind like staying upright :D
Great film, and looks an awesome place.
Brilliant, I loved that thanks Steve
wowee, fantastic Steve, I had a left side stroke 5 yrs ago and I probably wouldn't manage the way back as I'd fall over but the way ther I might mange, great video.
Thanks for coming along Kevin!
That was amazing and beautiful scenery 🤗
Wow what a bonus treat that was, don’t get too down on your self, safety first. Beautiful and tranquil sea views with relaxing sound of the waves.
Cheers John :)
LOVE this video! Thank you for sharing this hidden gem in Northern Ireland. This will most definitely be on my small-group tour to Ireland!
WOW Steve, I had no idea where you were taking us today! That was some walk.
Thank you for sharing. Fascinating and what a feat of engineering
👌
Cheers Lynn! I had no idea either :D
@@steve-marsh 😄
Brilliant video cheers Steve fancy doing that might be over there in a couple of weeks.
I loved this so much! As I watched I wondered about the engineering and labor effort put into build and then rebuild this!
Never been to Northern but I'm definitely thinking about it this year thanks to your video.
Such a great video 📸 keep them coming
You’ll get there mate I know it and I look forward to seeing the videos!
Splendid walk.
Nothing like starting your trip in the ugly end of town!
Steve you make videos, love them. My mother was from Ireland
Thanks Patrick!
This was very entertaining to watch. 😀
Glad I found your channel, ty for the content!
Hey thanks so much for watching :)
Booked some tickets a few years ago but a storm put paid to it. Thw Northern Ireland coastline is stunning and loved my trip there
Aye that whole coastline is stunning! Hard lines! It would be cool in stormy weather as well!
Another masterpiece here Steve, don’t know why I’d expect anything less 🤣🤣. Again NI is somewhere I’ve never been but always wanted to go, albeit with a little trepidation (for obvious reasons). The weekend just gone I was offered free accommodation in Belfast by a friend of mine who couldn’t believe I’ve never been over… with an offer like that and having just viewed this superb video, I’m officially out of excuses for not making the trip over I think!! 😂😂. Cheers 🍻 Steve.
Go for it! Fantastic city :)
Journey continuous and I will see you again somewhere soon. I luke this final phrase
Thanks so much!
Awesome walk and amazing video. A definate addition to the to do list. Cheers for taking us along with you!
Thanks Colin! I'd never even heard of it before, just a chance visit, so glad it came off!
So love your vids can never get enough 😊
Thanks so much Richard!
Nice one Steve, you did well to find it, we did that last year and plenty of locals didn't know where it was, we also did the "Carrick o Reed" rope bridge, with your head for heights, that would be a challenge.
Oh the rope bridge is high on the list :)
Loved the video, my wife and I are hoping to visit the next few weeks,. Thanks for the review cant wait for our trip there.
So glad you're going! I had so many people saying I should have stopped off for ice cream at the red shop on the way - apparently it's not to be missed ;)
that was fabulous!
Thanks Ann!
FAB Video of a very cool place Steve. Ive never been to Northern Ireland but have visired Soutgern Ireland a few times. Wow what a cool chain walk that was..I loved the way you filmed it .Thanks for sharing.😊😊😊
Wow, what a hike, it was amazing. Thanks for showing that to us.
My absolute pleasure :)
I would have to think about this path. It looks "ify" in some spots and you definitely have to be sure footed. The coastline was beautiful however I would be concentrating on the path I would miss alot. Safe trip.
Your videos are getting better and better. I love the POV style. Thanks Steve.
Thanks so much Mike!
Another excellent video - Northern Ireland is really a marvellous place to visit- you have highlighted this attraction in a really professional way - as always !
Thanks John! This whole coastline deserves so much more time than I could give!
Beautiful Steve!!!
Thanks Jon!
That looked so fun.
So glad I booked this wee tour :)
Another amazing video.
Thanks for the adventure. 💯
Aww thanks so much Monica! :)
Wowsers…that’s looked amazing
It was pretty spectacular Jen!
WOW! that's incredible!! Putting it on my bucket list for if I ever get back to your side of the pond!
Cheers Jeff! NI coastline is incredible!
First of all was glad to find out what a gobbbins was for sure as I had no idea, lol! What a lucky find and I'm beyond glad you shared the experience. I was born and raised on the prairies in Canada and there are parts that I love but the coast is a place I find true peace and it seems all coasts give that same feeling. Absolutely breath taking and thank you once again!!! Side note, thank you for the side notes, love to read them every time. Have a great week!!!
Thanks Cheri! The coast is always where I am happiest :)
