Koduri Kousalyadevi garu was one year senior to me in Government Arts College, Rajahmundry (RJY). Telugu short stories written by her and me were accepted for publication in the College Year Book (1955). Her story titled, ‘Abala kaadu sabala’ won a prize, and thus, winning a prize for her work started for Kousalya from her student days itself. And the author assigns these qualities to her heroine Savitri garu (S) in Dr. Chakravarthy. Adurthi garu was from RJY, and whenever there was a movie from Adurthi, we felt as though it was an RJY movie! S and I were of about the same age group, she was just two years older to me. When she became a full star with Pelli Chesi Choodu (1952), her picture was published on the title page of Andhra Patrika weekly, she was so pretty! As the movies of S rolled into the theaters one by one, our love, admiration, regard and affection for her grew enormously, we developed a sibling feeling for her! Even though S performed in umpteen stellar roles and gained the title Mahanati, sadly, her real life ended in tragedy, which does not make sense. As a major actress, S was supposed to have a personal physician checking her health frequently and continuously and for her diabetes and any other conditions she should have been taking daily medications which would have ensured her normal life. The doctor would have provided advice on how to be safe on other aspects too (e.g., mental health). By the mid to late 1950s it became clear that she was destined to become ‘The greatest South Actress,’ and so she should have hired a couple of great brains from the country to manage her affairs. There would have been a Savitri Studios, a Savitri multiplex and so on.

The best music given by S. Rajeswara Rao Garu. Kiran Prabha gari talk show super. Most melodious voice. Dukkipati Garu & Adurthi Garu super hit pair!
