  • Taraji P. Henson & Sam Rockwell The Best of Enemies Interview
With STXfilms releasing writer-director Robin Bissell’s true story drama, The Best of Enemies, this weekend in theaters, I recently sat down with stars Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell to talk about the film. During the interview, they talked about balancing fact and fiction when making a movie based on true-life events, why Henson was willing to surrender her vanity for the role, if they like the pressure of having limited time to make a movie, if they get nervous working with a first time filmmaker, how Rockwell likes to listen to people to learn accents, and more.
If you haven’t seen the trailer, The Best of Enemies centers on the unlikely relationship between Ann Atwater (Henson), an outspoken civil rights activist, and C.P. Ellis (Rockwell), a local Ku Klux Klan leader who reluctantly co-chaired a community summit, battling over the desegregation of schools in Durham, North Carolina during the racially-charged summer of 1971. The film also stars Babou Ceesay, Anne Heche, Wes Bentley, Nick Searcy, John Gallagher Jr., and Bruce McGill.

Superb movie . Way better than I expected. Let this be a lesson , Hollywood . You don’t need extreme graphic violence, nudity, sex and a hundred F bombs to make a good movie. This one had NONE of that and it was the best movie I’ve seen this year.

I really like Taraji, one of my favorite actresses out there. But wouldn’t Octavia Spencer (another one of my favorites) of been perfect for this part? She has both the physicality and voice of the character naturally without the need for props and she’s an Oscar winner to boot.

David that is a fair opinion and good look, they were be many parts for ALL and TP just like to stretch her wings and do the unexpected; please don't fault her for that range.

I agree- I wonder if maybe because of Spencer's part in The Help was something of iconic, maybe she just didn't want the role, to avoid being typecast in the minds of the viewers. Of course, I have no idea- just a thought. I think because of the "unexpectedness" of Henson in the role, it was probably even more attractive to Henson.

Heyspeakfromheartwithlove yeah, you might be onto something there. Similar thoughts crossed my mind too after I posted the comment.

Such a great movie. I had not seen the trailer or heard about it. I was impressed when I saw it. The gas station scene was so powerful that I couldn't hold my tears at all. I saw it twice more after. God bless.

Why is this interviewer eating a snoopy shirt? So casual for a serious movie and professionals.
