Seeing actual videos and photos of these people, simple happy moments caught on camera by family and friends, with the knowledge they were tragically killed, it hits differently than a lot of other PSAs. Definitely among my favorites

    26:38 hi, I worked at an animal shelter for a bit and this PSA does tackle a serious issue, at least in America.
    A lot of shelter pets are returned when people decide they no longer want them, with three big times when pets are returned are Black Cats after Halloween, Rabbits after Easter, and Dogs after Valentine's and Christmas. There's also a really unfortunate habit of people simply leaving their pets to die when they no longer want them. I have worked with animals who were left for dead before. It's very sad.

    • @LMNL_SUPRSTR
      @LMNL_SUPRSTR Před rokem +7

      Never heard of this before. Sounds pretty messed up honestly. Those people dont deserve pets if that's what they're gonna end up doing, pretty much seems like a clout grab. "Look at my cute pet at Halloween" and then they just return it. Fishing for attention on social media. Sad really

    • @cognizant3252
      @cognizant3252 Před rokem

      @@LMNL_SUPRSTR that, and, usually parents buy the pet for a child, realize how much care a pet actually needs (it’s all “look at the cute kitty!” Until you need to clean the litter box, pay vet bills, and vacuum the house more often from all the hair) and decide that returning a pet is somehow less socially acceptable than letting the pet die. I’ve worked with a lot of people who have had genuine reasons for returning a pet. I had to return a pet once. We had adopted a little black kitten when we were poor and the kitten ended up having a rare blood issue that needed monthly medication costing over a thousand dollars each month. We loved the cat but we couldn’t take care of it, so we returned it to the shelter and it found a new home.
      Some people feel their social standing and pride is more important than the life of an animal. And those people, if a hell exists, belong there.

    Correction: The name of the PlayStation commercial was actually called "Mental Wealth" and it was actually meant to promote for the PS1 as the commercial was released in 1999 (a year before the PS2's launched).
    And the name "Chris Cunningham" was actually the name of the director who made this commercial, and he has also made other commercials and a bunch of music videos for Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, and Bjork.
    I recommended to you to watch "Come to Daddy", "Windowlicker", and "Rubber Johnny" by Aphex Twin, you can (almost) understand the style that Chris has.

    • @LordMoldoma
      @LordMoldoma Před rokem +18

      Analog Horror may have contributed a little bit, but more importantly lost episode creepypastas are what did it for me. Vaporwave actually comforted my view of quite a bit of retro media because I enjoyed listening to it.
      But I remember being scared of things as a child for seemingly no good reason, such as the TiVo mascot, who me and my sister referred to as the “colorful character” and were absolutely terrified of.

    • @NostalgiaUnicorn
      @NostalgiaUnicorn Před rokem +3

      @@LordMoldoma Yeah, that too. I think anything that distorts older media has contributed. I will say that back in the 90's, I was listening to old recordings from the 30's and 40's and there wasn't this "oooh spooky old stuff" culture then. Watching the last intact copy of a cartoon or listening to a degraded copy of an old radio show was a lot more sad than scary. Actually, more of a mix of incredibly sad that it was nearly lost but amazed that something remained to even be experienced. It seems weird to me that VHS glitches and static scare people these days.

    • @NostalgiaUnicorn
      @NostalgiaUnicorn Před rokem +1

      I also want to note.. I'm currently encoding old VHS tapes I made in the 80's. They don't look like those analog horror VHS filters at all. There's a video on YT about how those filters were made - basically they mangled the heads of a VCR to do it. VHS should look muted but constant lines, random static, bad sound, loud hissing, etc.. those are signs of a dying VCR, a bad recording, or a damaged tape. It's fun showing an encode to Gen Z friends and getting the reaction of "This looks half way decent. Did you edit it?"

    They also say to "ask you neighbor" because I guess it's easier than saying to ask the adults in houses that your kid will be spending time in. There's stories of children going to a family member's house or a friend's house, finding a gun, and someone getting hurt. 26:37 hard disagree on it not having anything to say, it's about the phenomenon of "Christmas puppies" or sometimes "Easter bunnies" where people buy pets as a gift without any kind of thought as to how much time and effort it is to keep a pet let alone train a puppy. Unfortunately best case scenario is they get given up to a shelter, worst case is that (and I've heard of this happening where I live) the family will want to get rid of the pet without being seen as irresponsible and will either dump the dog in the middle of nowhere (usually at an intersection so they can stop at a stop sign, boot the dog out the door, and then drive off) or as the psa shows just straight up kill the pet. This was especially common with older generations, there's a reason everyone has heard of the bag of kittens in a river.

    I remember seeing beware thin ice every year around the early winter and spring in the Finnish tv channel 2. That’s why the creatures form number 2. Those were the channels children program’s mascots back in early 2000’s.
    The psa wasn’t scary because it was old. To Finnish kids, it was scary because the sounds the bear makes when he falls in the ice and how he says beware the thin ice.
    I’m surprised nobody who talks about that psa says anything about the sounds.
    More facts about the channel this was always aired: the Finnish channel 2 is aired by the Finnish news service called Yle or “yleis radio” in English public radio. The channel is ran with taxpayers money such as their radio channels and has no commercials.
    They air a children show block called “pikku kakkonen” which is little Two in Finnish, every business day at the morning (lasting from 7am to 9/10am) and evening (5pm to 6pm)
    The morning block is showed in weekends too.

    There’s an ad I saw in Italy (I think, possibly Germany) in the early 2000s I’ve never seen anywhere since. There was a person standing on the ledge of a tall building getting ready to jump when someone rushes over to coax them back in. The ad ends with the them then helping the potential jumper out onto the ledge on the other side of the building before cutting to reveal the helper’s car and how the first window would’ve had the jumper land on it. I forget what car was being advertised.
    I’m surprised the list didn’t have the “you wouldn’t do it in public” hot coffee PSA or the “if you do nothing you might as well be helping” baseball bat domestic violence PSA.
