Queen - A - Thon - THE SHOW MUST GO ON - Freddie Mercury - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Tutorial
In “The Show Must Go On” Freddie Mercury was able to muster the strength to put together one last unforgettable, spot-on performance before he passed.
What other legendary performances can you think of that were pulled off in the most unlikely of circumstances? Share with me in the comments.
Brian May was apparently concerned that Freddie would still be able take on the song in his condition but Freddie would put out what I think was one of his better high range vocal performances.
As we look at his isolated vocals we’ll break down the straightforward approach he used for the song and how he literally gave his all for the performance.
Be sure to check out the versions of the tune from Sara Loera and Dino Jelusick here:

For me, the real genius of this song is the way it just keeps building and building to a crescendo.
It's a great one!
He’s one of the best vocalist of all time in any genre.....
Yes indeed!
@@kentamplin I really appreciate your breakdowns and honesty!

Freddie will always have a place in our hearts. ❤️💔
Indeed.
The way Freddie sings the line "I can fly my friend..." always shakes me to my core
👍😊
The actual last recording of Freddie singing is the beautiful, heartbreaking "Mother Love" which, after the first 2 verses, Freddie said he wasn't feeling well and would come back and finish it. He never could. So Brian sings the last verse and you can hear the pain and sorrow in his voice. If you've not done that one, check it out. And, btw, I LOVE the long list of Freddie's isolated vocals-- "Under Pressure" being one where there's no other recording of it that showcases Freddie's tremendous power and range. I've suggested some isolated vocals to other reactors and not one has paid any attention. Their loss, but it's a loss for a lot of viewers, too. So thank you for doing this. Love it! And love your videos, Ken.
😊👍
'Made In Heaven' is an amazing album when considering how far Freddie's health had deteriorated. Some fantastic material on there.
That is true. Mother love is his last song. I don't know how he does it in his condition
@@kentamplin Ken I'm impressed you could hit those B4s on the spot like that for a Baritone! Also I never thought about the interpretation of the lyrics "heart is breaking but wanting to break free" as his way of embracing his fate, very inciteful, a philosopher and an artist 👍👍 I wished you talked more about Freddy hitting the C# & D5 though
The fact that Freddy accomplished such an amazing feat with his last strength only made him even more iconic. He was one of the greatest.
Legendary.
When he sang the line "the show must go on" in the first chorus I got goosebumps. Incredible power and emotion
Agreed!
🎉🎉
@@kentamplin
My favourite lyrics: "Outside the dawn is breaking, but inside in the dark I'm aching to be free".
Chills.
Freddie Mercury still gave it his all despite being terminally ill. His powerful voice will never be forgotten.
Absolutely!
@9:18 "My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies. Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die" is also a genius reference to a very, very early Queen song, My Fairy King: "Someone has drained the colour from my wings
, Broken my fairy circle ring", about an imaginary world he created with his younger sister when a child.
The book-ends of his life.
He wanted to leave while gave his best work to the world... Legend..
Thanks for listening!
What’s more amazing to me about this song isn’t just Freddy’s ability to sing like that from his deathbed but the mental fortitude it took. How many people could sing about their own impending death like that without getting emotional and choking up? He was a true artist and professional to the end. ❤
The man was sick still kicking ass
The ending of this song never fails to give me goosebumps! He really gives it all he had still in him! A masterpiece
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
Freddie-the best EVER 🤍
I don't think he was human.
For me, the best part of the song is when he sings " I'll face it with a grin, I'm never giving innnn...." just spine chilling stuff!
👍
Just like a true artist, he brought us into his life in a way we could comprehend, feels like a close friend, I hold him in my heart and the love is what connects everything. What a gift. Thank you Freddie.
Well said, Judie!
@@kentamplin Amen.
😔😣so beautifully written 💜
I always looked at this song as Freddie giving us permission to enjoy the new incarnations of Queen after his passing so his sings and legacy could live on.... Such a powerful song that brings tears to my eyes everytime.
Freddie was very sick while recording this.
Thank god for stoly in his words
Thanks for listening!
Such power and passion even mid 1991, when he was horribly ill.
Loved your analysis, I think you are absolutely spot on, on everything.
This song always makes me so emotional.. You can tell he's basically saying, yeah I'm dying and it's becoming more visible, but the show must go on. The fact he could still sing like this so close to the end is insane.
What gets me most is though, it's obvious music was in his soul. Been so sick, most artists would stop singing, but not Freddie and continued until the very end. I remember reading an article with Brian may saying a lot of his last songs he had to have long breaks and lay on the floor because of how sick he was, truly is heart breaking.
Very poignant.
I think he became music after leaving us physically ....
Loved your analysis. Yes, he's one of the best vocalist of all time. LEGEND
Legend indeed.
One of the most honest, sincere, moving & haunting vocal performances of all time.
It’s like I know I’m sick & dying, but I am also Freddie Mercury!!!
If this is truly my final vocal performance, I’m going out with guns/vocals blazing!!!💪💯
Thank you, Shannon!
It's really remarkable Freddie was able to continue singing the way he did. Drs have said AIDS really attack the throat, so it was kind of miracle. Great reaction.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I personally think this was his best recorded vocal performance.
It's great!
U are rite. Best vocals in the universe
I was just going to say the same thing!
Perfect for the song. A man fighting for his life. Power and vulnerability. Everytime I listen to the song Im on the edge of my seat, if he hits the High d in the end. He sounds a little restrained in the two phrases just before and Then boom he hits it. Gives me chills everytime. Autotune and perfect relaxed technique Cant get you thoose emotions. Thats why its a perfect vocal.
Another very heavy song of his that relates to him knowing his fortune is ‘who want’s to live forever’.
OMG, Freddie was an incredibly talented musician and singer, someone that you probably experience once in a lifetime.....
Absolutely!
Thank you for showing this fantastic song! Impossible to understand what went on in the studio while recording this song and Freddie laying down the vocals!
Thanks Ken!
My pleasure!
Get goosebumps every time I hear this song . Freddie was truly one of a kind , otherworldly , we will never see the likes of someone like him ever again. I knew this was his swan song but thank you for this breakdown Ken!
Thanks for listening, derek!
Real Superman Freddie was, this perfomance is beyond amazing. He gave all he had to let his final message. And, God, this song for me is just so hard to sing! God bless his soul
Well said, Rafa!
Wow 🥰 beautiful Freddie Mercury ❤️
Never be another like him, bitter sweet, yes he does not sound sick, what a professional.
Yes indeed!
Its a wow the heart hes showing when he was so ill, such a sad story but man he could move people. Hes also saying fight and never give up
Well said!
Do more of the Innuendo/Miracle album stuff, his voice and singing was always spectacular, but in the last few years, after quiting tour and such, his voice got rest, and his technique just got even better, due to also his sickness, he probably didnt just shout every song his lungs out, he probably did sing it more lighter on purpose due to his sickness and also to keep his voice in shape the more he can.
Thanks for the suggestion, Ostone!
@@kentamplin whaat do you think about Innuendo? for me its probably the best song of Queen .. also one of the underrated /best songs of aall time
He got nodules in the mid 80's too, that also affected his switch to more technical singing.
Depressing to know Freddie sung this epic song during his last days😞
Indeed.
Mother love was the last of the lasts songs
This Song is just amazing. The dying mans last words and song. Queen, one of the best bands ever. What a way to go .... 👏👏👏 Yes EPIC
Thanks for watching, Erik!
Loved these are the days of our lives.
I heard in a documentary that he wasn't able to stand anymore the last times he was recording. So he did it while sitting. As a result, he probably lost some volume. It was a first take after he drank a lot of vodka. Unbelievable when you consider how sick he was already.
One of my favorite Queen songs despite it being very emotionally painful to listen to. A lot of bravery to be able to approach death like that.
Thanks for watching, Ryan!
One of a kind Voice
Absolutely!

@@kentamplin Adam Lambert said that this is the most difficult song out of Queen's catalouge for him to sing.
I agree that his vocal performance is stunning here despite his condition. I feel so deprived to miss the great Queen live. R I P Freddie.
Gone too soon.
It's insane to think that this song was recorded as he was dying but still he delivered those vocals better than some singers in their prime.
I agree.
It's only one thing to say: "Freddie is Freddie! Congrats. Ken!!!
Rock on, Plinio!
Freddie rock
Freddie was amazing on this album
Just spine chilling for someone weakend by that kind of desease... And still pushing himself to get everything spot on... Says a lot about his determination and work ethic as an artist. A true genius. Thanks for posting this.
😊👍
11:19 your concern for our souls is hilariously warm lol --- thanks Ken XD lollll
Epic song. Saw them in 80'. Phenomenal individual, talent & life story. Hard to believe it's been 30 years. I hope he found his Valhalla. Very cool shirt Ken !
Thanks for listening!
This is my favourite queen song. I came across this song through the most indirect of path. The first song of queen I ever heard and it has captured me ever since.
It's a great one!
Great job! I've always kind of been..distantly *aware* of Queen, mostly from Wayne's World and A Knight's Tale, but I only recently starting paying attention and really *appreciating* them. They're all so great but Freddie is just so easy to fall in love with. His energy is magical. And now, any time I watch or hear anything related to the time leading up to his passing, I get teared up, and I'm not one to cry easily! This was no different. His strength and passion, even at the end of his life, is nothing short of amazing. RIP legend
Thanks Ken for your expert analysis of one of the greatest songs ever written!!!
I know there have been a slew of covers but nothing compares to a dying man’s declaration that “the show must go on”. Love Freddie’s vocals … chilling!! 🥺
My pleasure!
Fantastic song!
Absolutely!
One of the greatest vocalists of all time. PERIOD!!!
Indeed!
definitely a unique voice. An immortal composition. Thank you, Ken, for the pleasure.
My pleasure!
This analysis brought me to tears. We are so blessed to have lived in the same time period as this amazing artist.
Rock on!
Almost everytime, I'm listening to this song, I tear up.. Such a masterpiece, Freddie was a beast even when he was so close to death! I hope he's watching us! :-)
Indeed!
Ken, you did a fantastic job explaining this last beauty ! Til this day Ken when watching this video I still cry . Death has no empathy! Blessings..🙏🏻🖤🤘
It is sad, kelly. Thanks for listening!
One of my favorite queen songs. It's a powerful song on it's own but when you put it in the context of what Freddy was going through while recording it...heartbreaking.
I agree, Brett.
I really like your points, notes, and thoughts in this song.
It's quite a poetic work!
One of the things I like about this song is the vulnerable position he takes by asking, "does anybody know...?"
Thank you, Steve!
@@kentamplin thank YOU, good sir!
This song is so powerful and Beautiful ❤️
Sure is!
Every time I listen to this song I get chills and emotional. It is absolutely amazing of how awesome his voice sounds and he was literally dying. Shows you how strong his heart and passion was. I think this is his best performance. Man, Freddie will always be the best, no one could ever top this in my opinion. What an incredible preference!! MISS FREDDIE SO MUCH!!!
Gone too soon.!
This is truly an iconic performance by a master singer / performer also a great song - thanks for this video
My pleasure.
This song gives me goosebumps. Maybe my favorite one from Queen. The way Freddy sings is just amazing: the lyrics, the melody, the orchestrations, everything is awesome ! I can't help but cry everytime i hear it
😊👍
Freddie had a lot of friends , even very good friends as band members but unfortunately he was lonely as a soul , yes such a great artist , feeling all feelings so deep maybe that made him so creative , so unique 💖
I'm sure that is possible, Aleph!
Legend. ❤ R.I.P.
👍😊
Literally had goosebumps. How poignant that someone else wrote the words to reflect Freddie Mercury’s thoughts about the end of his career and life.
Thanks for watching, Joy!
Great analysis Ken & superb to hear the vocals isolated. Incredible. I never really fully appreciated the "magic" of Freddie Mercury, aside from Bohemian Rhapsody, but here it is very apparent. Thanks for what you do Ken. Love to Freddie's family & loved ones.💖🤘💖✌💜🙏
Thank you, Christian!
Hearing that song play after the movie, it crushed me. I asked my friend to stop and wait until the song ends and it haunted the entire cinema.
Incredibly moving. Bittersweet.
I first heard this song about 2 months ago and i cant stop listening to it since
Unbelievable performance! RIP Fred

@@kentamplin Yes :( But great to hear again with your insights!
Love to hear your analysis
Freddie asked Bryan for a farewell song !!
And Bryan wrote the best song, imagining what Freddie was feeling when the end was near.
Wonderful vocals !!
Thanks for the visit, Fabio!
This isnt the last song freddie sang lol. Sang many more
Ken Ken Ken! I loved this analysis of one of the greatest rock singers ever. The isolated vocal was amazing as Freddy did not need his voice to be enhanced by instruments or dubbing. He was all natural, all talent. He can’t be replicated nor forgotten. I bought a home months before his passing and got a second male cat from a shelter. I named it Freddie in honor of Freddie Mercury. Than Freddie died and my new cat turned out to be female. ( fitting given Freddie’s life style ) Anyway. You do him justice. You have an excellent voice yourself. Aside from being a vocal coach, do you have a band? I would love to hear it if you do
I had to revisit this vid. Seriously having re-listened to this I realize with his astounding performance, this song really doesn’t need instrumentation. I could listen to just Freddie sing this A cappella all day long. It is actually… perfect. And I must say your vocals in this video are also quite good. Dare I say amazing.
... and not to forget to mention, that it was told, that Freddie sang it all in one take.
Diving into those lyrics, can make you cry.
👍😊
Super cool ! Great video !
Thank you! Cheers!
It’s amazing how well he sang even as sick as he was - iconic artists seem to pull out the reserves and find a way to still perform - part of what makes him truly great . I recently watched a video of Elvis performing “Unchained Melody “ very close to his death - he could barely speak but when he got to the piano somehow he sang great and nailed the song - soon after he died . The greats always seem to find a way to nail the performance regardless of what is happening in their lives - they go to a place where the music is all that matters
Well said, Drew!
You’re the best Ken!!
You are, Max!
This song always makes me a bit teary eyed. It makes u take a look at your own life. Live Aid cemented him as the best frontman.
Indeed!
I'm really enjoying your Queen A Thon. So much good analysis. Freddie's singing and performance lives on!
Glad you are enjoying it, Janetjrfan!
Some performances are so inspirational that it's hard to find any words for it and you have to sit in silence for a good while afterwards to absorb its powerful effect.

👍
Amazing singer. I love the songs from the Highlander movies, but such a body of work.......dang.
👍👍👍
Listening to this on Studio headphones, to appreciate the mix, Freddie was a very unique talent.
He surely was.
This song is not from this world. 🌹
I agree.
Definitely not
Man this song has so much meaning..
Freddie was unique and insanely talented. BTW: I want your shirt...badly!
Agreed!
One of my favorite song from Queen. 👍
Awesome!
Wonderful vocal. I remember an interview with producer, David Richards, who said Freddie was singing so effortlessly during these sessions having stopped touring and all of the excess. He said it was like recording/watching a choir boy.
Rock on!
I thought the voice got thinner too, as time wore on for him. Imo, there is evidence of this on 'the miracle' album.
He prob just didn't have the breath and stamina of years gone by. The man was a machine though. In the face of adversity, he produced some of his best performances. Brings tears to my eyes listening to this track. I don't shy away from it though coz, well.....life goes on. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when it was announced on the radio in 1991. Sad day but, by most accounts, he lived a lifetime 😉
Thank you for the beautiful thoughts, Tony!
this and These Are the Days of our Lives are my fav "modern" Queen songs. they are so powerful, especially in the context of what was going on with Freddie at that time
Thanks for listening!
Just being himself and telling a story of life. There's more to life. Powerful singing. Love this series! Thanks sir Ken!
My pleasure, Joshua!
I love that song
😊👍
Once again, Ken, thank you for another insightful video. This song has always sent shivers down my spine and it represents a time when the band were really focused on recording as much material with Freddie as possible. He told them that he needed something to do more than ever during those last moments. Also, your choice of t-shirts haven't gone unnoticed lately! This one seems particularly appropriate as it shows the hope and promise of eternal life through Jesus defeating and rising above the pain and imperfection of our world below. Art is very subjective though, but that's what I see.
Rock on!
Thank you for analyzing this
Freddie was so very I'll and he pulled it off in one try, amazing .
Glad you enjoyed it, Carla!
I've always had Freddie Mercury as one of my favorite singers and still is, but getting into your work made me add you to that group, Ken. Not because just your amazing skills and knowledge about singing, but also as being a great teacher. Most of all, by the love for music that you show going deep in every detail: lyrics, vocals, instrumental parts, production... the whole package. You're such an inspiration for me, a former guitarist now going towards the vocal stuff. Thanks for your videos. God bless you!
I appreciate that, Leonardo!
One of my favorites. Haunting, heart breaking, and powerful. Lovin the Queen-A-Thon!
Thanks for listening, Vince!
One of Brian’s best songs.
It's great!
An epic performance considering what he went through at the time/the circumstances
Absolutely, Tyler!
You take my breath away really highlights Freddie's vocal ability (studio version is a total eargasm, the live at Hyde Park is also special)
Thank you.
Amazing analysis!
This video was sincerely amazing, i just loved your deep analysis of the lyrics. Now, thinking about what you said in "my soul is painted" part, the music video kinda shows that, Freddie happily shaking people's hands in a white suit.
I'd he happy if you did Who Wants To Live Forever too.
Thanks for the visit, Sheriff!
Amazing analysis Ken, one of the most emotional and arguably one of the hardest songs to sing. I'd say the only sadder song in Queens catalogue is Mother Love which Freddie never got to finish, the last verse is sung by Brian. It has a very emotional guitar solo as well
Glad you enjoyed it, Philip!
Freddie ´s last song is Mother Love, which was finished by Brian May after his death, heartbreaking. Innuendo album is one of my favorite, great songs, great vocals. I love Don´t Try So Hard from this album, beautiful
Thank you. That's mentioned in previous comments. 😊
