- Welcome to another Character Ballad- and a wildly ambitious one at that! Few people exist on an echelon of calibur more impressive than this man. Discarded by fate, shunned by a society he protects, and forgotten by the annals of history. An unsung hero. God among men. I am referring to none other than Paper Luigi. A paragon of the Paper Mario universe, and one of my favorite characters to watch evolve across the original three entries of the Paper Mario series, and I’m not kidding. Y’see, Paper Luigi might, in fact, be the origin of the modern characterization of Luigi in general. If he isn’t, then he certainly steered it into the loveable soft-hearted gentleman we see today. Most of the Paper versions of long-standing Mario characters were given more personality than they ever previously had. Paper Peach plays an active role in her own rescues. Paper Bowser is a rough-and-tough goofball, who constantly fumbles his plans due to his incompetent subordinates when he isn’t completely barking up the wrong tree. Paper Mario himself is a Mickey Mouse-esque interpretation of the character: energetic, out-spoken, but unlike Mickey, a little too polite sometimes. Yet none of them have as huge of a glow-up as Paper Luigi. A character who begins the series as a background element, to a background element, and steadily earns his place as a central party member, making mistakes all along the way. Whereas your Luigi Mansions will play up the cowardice of our subject today, Paper Mario aims to create a self-made bad-ass out of his early easter egg origins. This is the first explanation I've heard for why final boss Mr. L acts so differently from his personification in the rest of the game and I love it. I was literally muttering "that's so fucking cool" to myself before you even had to spell it out verbally, bravo.

They gave him a way better role in origami king, finding keys we need exactly when we need them. He was the perfect plot convience!

Ah! I had always felt a little weird about Luigi being in the SPM final boss, but you tied it all together in a very satisfying way. Been thinking about that game a lot in general lately...Great little video, love to see the writing of the first few paper marios get the respect they deserve!

Ahh I was looking forward to this. I remember being sad during the entire recording and now I'm sad all over again 😭. Seriously, someone give Luigi a hug! Also, I'm not too familiar with the franchise. I've only played the original Super Mario game. Even then, I did have a preference for Luigi. I remember once mom and dad were playing together. Mom controlled Mario and dad Luigi. When mom's Mario would die, dad would get to take Luigi on an adventure. But then mom would be upset cause she didn't get to play. So eventually dad gave up and let Luigi die. And you know what? That actually made me inexplicably sad. Even remembering it now makes me tear up. It's true that Luigi was just a palette swap back then, a copy of Mario for the dual play option. But even as a child, I never viewed him that way. He was always Luigi to me. Hearing how sad and lonely he felt in the Paper Mario series breaks my heart. I imagine that many must relate to these feelings with regards to their siblings. I love how a game seemingly targeted at a younger audience can tell such a complex story, provided you look beneath the surface.

Also there is the theory that the compass pieces Luigi collected in TTYD, which are approximately 1000 years old, are connected to the also 1000 years old prognosticons in SPM, as the compass pieces cursed Luigi to “bear the burden of the future” which only he can do. The prognosticons also give Luigi the burden of deciding the future.

Shit like this is why classic Paper Mario will always be a trilogy to me. One day we will get a fourth game. Hopefully the TTYD remake paves the way for that.

Holy crap I'm so glad I sat down to listen to this. I'm currently writing a fan sequel to Super Paper Mario called Paper Luigi and the Return of Dimentio where Luigi is obviously the main character, and had I kept my knowledge of his character down to just his SPM appearence, my continuation would have felt like it was retreading old ground. With this information you've given me from 64 and TTYD, I'm gonna rework how he's protrayed for the better.
Solid video, never realized some of the subtlties in SPM that you mentioned, like how the hollowness of the final Mr. L battle(Super Dimentio). Good job!

I remember back then there as a rumor that if you beat TTYD, then you can play the Luigi story. I was so sad when I learned that it was fake lol. I still want to play the Luigi story. 😅

Man, Nintendo did the Paper Mario series dirty after Super Paper Mario. Now it's just generic papered copies of the bad guys and good guys, and hardly any new original type characters. They really took a low risk move. Stories like Paper Luigi made the games extra special and charming. And man, glad to hear that you were glad to make that "Princess is in another castle" joke with Luigi, literally emphasizing the L he took

Paper Luigi's story is another nugget of impeccable detail and character that makes the original Paper Mario games such an outstanding addition to the Nintendo world. One thing I love about Paper Mario is the overlooked continuity between games that makes the universe feel real and lived in. To me it's always been most clearly represented in Mario and Bowser's relationship. It's been a long time since I completed Super Paper Mario so I haven't been able to really consider what a phenomenal character Luigi is here. Glad to be able to experience it in this video!
The Paper Mario continuity has so many cool arcs to find inside it. If I wasn't trying to mix it up with who gets a character ballad, I could easily do one for Bowser and Peach too!

When you said the original Paper Mario games I assumed you would be starting with Mario RPG because that's truly where they started.

As someone with a lot of imposter syndrome, Paper Luigi is a very relatable character: The feeling of never living up to an impossible standard no one has set up for you besides yourself, feeling unfulfilled after doing cool and impressive stuff, etc.
Things like him are a reason why the new Paper Mario games (emphasis on the paper part 🙄) will always be my inferior to the original 3 in every way.
