    To add to the "why aren't the devs doing as much as the modders!1!" thing - game dev is hard like you say, modding is comparatively easy. The basis is already there, as a modder I can effectively just change a few numbers and it'll look like I've done a lot, because all the hard work has already been done by the game devs.

    • @GhostGlitch.
      @GhostGlitch. Před 2 lety +46

      Not only that but often modders let the player choose what is fun, balanced, and sometimes stable. They can let you crank things to 11 and take away any kind of challenge and crash your game like wander did.
      A game dev has to balance things themselves, and that's hard to get right.

    I'd say that topic is maybe more relevant to Minecraft than ever. The devs are always getting questions about why they're so slow at updating the game when modders can bring out new content so quickly. Never mind that a number of the people on the Minecraft dev team are ex-modders. In the end an official Minecraft update has to be acceptable to the majority of the playerbase; support a wider variety of hardware specs and platforms; be supported not just for the current version of the game but future versions; and do a whole bunch of other things that just aren't required of mods.
    There are probably features that the Minecraft devs would be able to release right now if all they had to worry about was Minecraft on the PC, but which can't be released because they don't know of a good way to get them working with touchscreen controls.

    • @dereinzigwahreRahl
      @dereinzigwahreRahl Před 2 lety

      I bet the whole thing is spaghetti-code or at least was at some point, which slows down further development. Also I guess Notch is a lazy fuck, before he sold it, Minecraft could barely be called a game, rather simply just a sandbox.

    • @Yay295
      @Yay295 Před 2 lety +4

      On the other hand, at the start, Minecraft had updates all the time. There were 101 updates in 2010. Minecraft really didn't have much at the start, but because of that, it was able to quickly add lots of small features. I think the constant updates really helped keep things fresh. Peglin on the other hand had 22 updates in 2021, and 44 updates since it came out. I'm not trying to say that's a bad thing since Peglin was obviously a much more full-featured game from the start, but it means there isn't as much room for improvement that can be used to keep people's interest.

    Build idea:
    I feel like you're gravitating towards the end of Peglin series for now, but if you want to do multiball run again, I would propose:
    - Multiball 6 (or so, it's rough estimation)
    - Starting with only 1 orb (i.e splatorb) and not adding more
    - Starting with Eye of Turtle and Mental Mantle
    Basic idea of the run is - you deal no damage with your shots, but you have to use targeting and damage from Mental Mantle.
    Starting with only 1 orb and not many items allows the run to progress and give a little bit of thrill at least at times.

    People complain because:
    A) Their anti-broken-runs approach that lead to them nerfing fun things while the game still has a borderline unbeatable hard mode.
    B) They don't put out "simple" content patches like new orbs/relics.
    C) It costs 20$ while in EA so people expect to see 20$ worth of stuff, there was always the choice of going for 5$ or 10$ and then increasing it on launch.

  • @123r97
    @123r97 Před 2 lety +6

    I think part of the lack of updates for the game is from a lack of what to expect going in. Other content creators had told them that they should only expect a fraction of the people that have wishlisted the game to actually buy it and then to expect sales to go up after about a year or so after the release since they were a new studio. What actually ended up happening was they sold more than the number of wishlisted and panicked a bit to meet expectations since suddenly the game was super popular and they were being flooded with bug reports on their discord with only two people working on the code for the game. They probably thought they had more time to work and flesh it out before more people would buy it. It's also early access, the game isn't even out fully so people should really tame their expectations.

    I honestly believe the moddability of the game is a strong point to me. Mods can be more diverse then a development team might consider worth the risk, they can be super hard or easy depending on what the modder wants, even if it only appeals to a very small group of players. Things that developers could never honestly spend time doing.
    The Devs have given modders a very easy platform to mod. With just Orbs and Pegs, the mob opportunities are very large. I wouldn't be surprised if this game becomes one that is mainly bought to play the mods for it. Plenty of games have fallen into this genre before, and thrive still.

    Run idea: every healing item, but also the item that makes every bomb is the red bombs.

    I think the rough thing about Peglin and early access and yadda yadda is that presently you can see everything the game has to offer in two runs. There's a bomb run and a peg stacking run, and mixes between the two. Likewise, it's easy 'beaten' in an hour or less of play. For a rogue-lite, that's not a lot of replayability.
    EDIT: You mention that at the point you're at, you have 31 hours of gameplay. That's also including modded time, and this is all streamed; the average player isn't getting the streaming value out of it, and the literal profit from it, and will likely move on long before that.
    As profitable as paid early-access is, it's a good way to burn out your players with an incomplete game. Content creators get the game a massive amount of attention, everyone plays it, gets bored, and the spark vanishes.
    MORE EDIT: I'm not mad at the developer or anything, nor do I own Peglin. I'll wait until full release, and I hope for the best. Right now, though, there isn't enough to make me want to join early access and I'll just enjoy it vicariously from people who can warrant buying it now.

    Hey Wander, just wanted to say, I like your feedback on some things! A friend and I are soon going to start making games for real and what you said about having control on roguelikes and wanting to have a certain build on a run made me think of something, we are definitely adding a system that helps with that if we ever make a roguelike! Porbably add a "synergy" system that reads what build you have so far and tries to give at least one option for it while still giving other random options for branching!
    Take backpack hero for instance, I'd add a hidden value to bows that gives them X% of chance to give you arrows when you loot enemies... or something along those lines. That would keep the feeling of randomness but still make the player feel great about their build choice!

      @wanderbots  Před 2 lety +1

      Having a roguelike try to identify what combos/builds/synergies that players are aiming for, and actively weight the drop tables accordingly could be really cool.
      IE: if I'm doing a no armor run in Backpack hero, reducing the frequency of low/mid-tier armor would be super nice for me as a player- especially if it means more arrows/daggers/gems/whatever else I'm building for. And then the few armor pieces that are offered should be wilder, more run-changing ones that can potentially lure me away from my currently established build, which would keep things feeling fresh from run to run.

    • @kogu9676
      @kogu9676 Před 2 lety

      @@wanderbots Exactly! Having that would be extremely healthy for the game's longevity and replayability! I take that kinda as my philosophy when coming up with game designs, it's all about keeping it fresh, interesting and optimizing player experience!
      Having things go your way while also having great pivot points sounds optimal!

    About the Cube World, I would disagree that it's fair to say Wolfram should have communicated more and push more updates, as the slow rate of updates and most of the issues with development of Cube World came from anxiety and depression caused by overwhelming demands of people to give them more updates, combined with basically a trauma after huge DDOS attack at their servers right on the game launch.
    It might be true that game had potential that went hugely unused, but to say Wolfram should have done more, while he couldn't do more exactly because of people demanding of him to do more, is... quite unfair.
    Generally though, I highly agree with your elaboration on game development and so on, I think it's very important topic to talk about as it's so often disregarded (which hurts mostly small indie teams and solo devs)... So seriously, thank you for the discussion!

    "I need to work on my video essays again"
    I can agree though about people being ridiculous with early access games. I'm actually considering doing the game design thing myself (quit work, taking a break to work on a card game, may do the game design thing later) and I know that if I religiously interact with the player base I'll just be dealing with thousands of haters commenting mean things about how I need to fix X now instead of Y which is stupid and nobody will use (which is the counter argument to the other group of players hating on Y because X is superior and should be buffed). If I do go into doing the game design thing, I'll certainly read commentary, but I don't think I'm going to take too much of it to heart. Especially if it isn't constructive (i.e. "X is broken, it should do Y when I Z but doesn't")
