  • The Nintendo Switch is home to some of the best JRPGs from this current generation, and even some of the best JRPGs ever in my opinion. This video takes a look at some of the top JRPGs released for the system yet. They're ranked in no particular order and is more just to showcase some of the console's best. No basic remasters/ports are included, but definitive editions previously never released in the US do count. Hope you all enjoy the video! Feel free to either like, comment, or subscribe. Thanks a bunch everyone.

      Three Houses is a quality game for sure. I’ve played various Fire Emblem games over the years, starting with the first one the west ever got localized for the GBA back in the day, and Three Houses has been the one that’s hooked me in the most. All aspects of the gameplay come together to create a really addicting experience

      @GamingBroductions  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for subscribing! You should definitely bust out those games when you can. I’m not sure which titles you own, but just keep in mind the FF games are all quite a bit different from each other (most of them at least) so just because you don’t like one game a whole lot doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy some others. DQ is quite a bit more consistent across the series, but some of the older titles may be a little too old school for most if you’re not familiar with the games so I would recommend the newer entries first. With FF, I personally think 6-10 are the best in the series and not necessarily the latest ones

    • @GamingBroductions
      @GamingBroductions  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you! Glad to hear you enjoyed it. If you liked Persona 4 and 5 for their story, then I would highly recommend the Trails of Cold Steel games. Very strong focus on the story and there are some similarities to Persona with the bonding mechanic. Just make sure you start with the first game as it’s all one big connecting plot. You might really like Sakura Wars and Tokyo Xanadu as well, they also have a strong focus on the narrative where the gameplay sort of takes a backseat in some regards. For something not in a modern/realistic setting, Final Fantasy X is fantastic. It’s a very cinematic game presentation wise and one of the more immersive stories in the series

    worth a mention but not on this list is Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3 and soon to come Trails of Cold Steel 4 for the switch, same studio as Ys VIII. Although the problem is this game shouldn't be played without at the very least having played the first 2 Trails of Cold Steel games. There are also 5 other games in the series that take place before the Trails of Cold Steel games that add a lot of context to many events but they're not absolutely necessary imo.
    It's the most ambitious JRPG out there in terms of story and characters and definitely the best JRPG at world-building, surpassing any other far and beyond, sitting at 10 games currently released following one continuous story that takes place in the span of 4 years game time and is still not finished yet.

    • @GamingBroductions
      @GamingBroductions  Před 3 lety +4

      I’m a big fan of the Legend of Heroes series actually! I’ve talked about it briefly on the channel before as the Trails in the Sky games topped our JRPG hidden gems list (even though they’re not really ‘hidden’ anymore). The only reason why I didn’t mention Cold Steel 3 on this list is because of the reason you mentioned regarding requiring knowledge of the previous games in order to fully appreciate and understand it. Even though you technically can skip straight to the 3rd Cold Steel game I didn’t really want potential new fans to do that by including it here as I feel it would be doing them some injustice, IMO. But yeah I fully agree with everything you said; the world building in the series is second to none and what always keeps me coming back. The first two Trails games are some of my all time favorites, I plan on doing some retrospectives over them eventually

    • @GamingBroductions
      @GamingBroductions  Před 3 lety

      You don’t need to know anything about previous Final Fantasy games in order to still enjoy FFXII. It’s a great game in its own right, just keep in mind it’s not the best representation of what the series is usually like. If you really enjoyed DQXI then I would recommend DQVIII over DQIII, at least for the next one. The older titles like DQIII are pretty archaic design wise in some aspects so just because you liked the 11th is no guarantee you’ll like the older ones. VIII is the most similar in presentation to XI though and usually regarded as one of the more accessible/better entries in the series to people who aren’t extremely familiar with it. If you enjoy that one too then I would recommend diving into the older games at that point, Dragon Quest is a great series for the right people!

      As weird as it sounds being that JRPGs are a genre usually with a strong focus on the story and characters, the DQ games have never really been about either of those things. People that enjoy the series usually compare it to ‘JRPG comfort food.’ It’s not necessarily the best in any one aspect or offers the most depth and complex story, but you know what you’re getting with each release: turn based gameplay, a bright and colorful world to explore, and a simple narrative to follow along as you visit towns/dungeons and gradually get stronger through leveling up and upgrading your equipment. It’s predictable and cliche but that’s exactly part of its charm and why people love it. Admittedly this doesn’t make it for everyone, but if you go in with these expectations I think they can be real enjoyable and relaxing experiences

      @@HungrySnowBadger No problem. I can see why you feel that way about the story/characters. I have to disagree about the lack of depth in gameplay though, at least for XI (older ones however yes I agree). If playing on normal mode I could see that but I played with the ‘Stronger Monsters’ mode on DQXI and hadn’t had to utilize that much strategy in a turned based system in a long time. It requires you to make full use of buffs/debuffs, status effects, etc. even on bosses. But if you really don’t like the story/characters then it’s probably not worth it to force yourself through it just for that though

    @NexusNine Před 3 lety

    The previous era of consoles, the 7th and 8th generations (PS3, XBox 360, Wii, and Wii U), did not lack JRPGs by any stretch. Yes, the XBox 360 and Wii U were weak in the JRPG department, but not the Wii or the PS3. Especially the PS3. There are a glut of JRPGs on the PS3. And the Wii has a fair share as well, from the FF Crystal Chronicles series to Chocobo Dungeon to Xenoblade Chronicles to The Last Story to Arc Rise Fantasia to the list goes on and on. It feels like there are more out there now simply because the Switch turned into THE destination to play JRPG, frankly, on the level of the PSX. But there is more to the story. Prior to the Wii, in the N64 and GameCube era, Nintendo lost a lot of third party support, and Nintendo's core audience became the fans of Nintendo's first party games. The SNES WAS the console for RPGs in the 1990s, until the PSX came out and the N64 went with cartridges instead of CDs. So JRPGs largely only had the PlayStation consoles to release on since the core JRPG crowd gravitated to those consoles. The Wii started changing that fortune for Nintendo as RPG players started coming back to the Nintendo brand. That gave more companies more options to release JRPG titles. The Wii U didn't catch on, so not many games were released at all for it of any genre. The Switch is huge, and the DS and 3DS had been getting JRPG titles in abundance. The DS and 3DS crowd flocked to the Switch for its portability, and with it came a large number of JRPG fans. So the Switch quickly became a desired destination for gaming companies to put their JRPGs on. And, yes, the PS4 has a lot of JRPGs, but all four PlayStation consoles have a lot of JRPGs. That's never changed. And you can't leave out the DS and 3DS, which were a haven ground for JRPGs. So I don't see where you think JRPGs were fading at any point.

    • @GamingBroductions
      @GamingBroductions  Před 3 lety +2

      We can agree to disagree there. Just because you listed a handful of examples doesn’t mean that generation really compares to how often JRPGs were releasing during the SNES/PS1/PS2 era. They were definitely in a decline during the PS3/Wii days in comparison. But I will say the PS3 started to step it up towards the end of the generation so maybe I was bit over dramatic with my word choice. The beginning of that era was pretty bleak though. And you are right about handhelds always having a fairly strong presence. I was mainly referring to consoles.

    • @GamingBroductions
      @GamingBroductions  Před 3 lety

      @@NexusNine Fair enough, I see your point. I could have chosen my words better. I still stand by the point I was trying to make though which was out of all the PlayStation consoles, the PS3 had the slimmest representation of JRPGs in comparison. I know that’s not what I said in the video but that’s really more what I was trying to get at. Sorry for the confusion and poor word choice on my end.

    • @NexusNine
      @NexusNine Před 3 lety +1

      I see you went back and edited after I edited to include the handhelds, so I deleted my other replay and I'll just say this: I've been a JRPG fan for about 30 years. I was there when only a handful of JRPGs released on the NES in the west in the early 1990s. SNES and Genesis definently picked it up a bit and, as an RPG gamer, that was a good time in gaming for me. I still remember that Chrono Trigger launched at $74.99, which was one of the most expensive SNES releases at that time. Still have my cartridge for it. Still, there weren't a ton of JRPG titles that made it to the west even on those two systems. Sure, more than on the NES and the Master System, but not a gluten of titles. There were still so many more JRPGs that came out in Japan that made us JRPG fans here in the west jealous. The PSX changed that and I still have my PSX and game library, including a complete copy of Suikoden II. I bought the game the day it came out. Nobody can touch the PSX's JRPG lineup as far as consoles are concerned. Anime was booming in the west at this point, too, which helped JRPGs catch on due to the similar aesthetic style of the art. As a gamer, I could not keep up with every JRPG release on the PSX. So I get it. I do see how you're seeing it. But that was an unprecedented time, as the PSX was releasing games at the very beginning of the JRPG explosion in popularity in western markets. Realistically, there was never any way the genre was going to maintain itself at that level without saturating the market. And that's what happened. It didn't lose popularity, just too much was coming out to be reasonably affordable, and there was no way everyone could buy every JRPG title that was coming out. Combine that with Nintendo losing that market on their consoles and JRPG gamers shifting to Nintendo's portable market for their JRPG fixes, and, yeah, it does look like the genre was starting to fade out around the 7th generation. But it wasn't, it was just shifting towards the portable market more so than consoles. And, to be fair, the reason why I feel handhelds need to be included in this conversation is because the Switch is as much a handheld system as it is a console, and it's the portable aspect of the system that drew the DS and 3DS gaming crowd over to the Switch. So all those people who flocked to the DS and 3DS for the JRPGs are now flocking to the Switch, which creates a new market and makes it easy for Nintendo market JRPGs on the Switch. The portable gamers are satisfied because they still have their portable system to play and their JRPGs on the go, and console gamers reap the benefit of having more JRPGs to play because of it. It's kind of brilliant. The Switch is what happens when you take the Wii U and 3DS and combine them. Because the Japanese market loves portable gaming, it meant JRPGs were going to be a big part of the Switch's library. And the more JRPG games released in Japan means more opportunities to port them to the western markets. And because the JRPG genre caught on so well in the west on portable systems, it makes the Switch the perfect place to release them. But that market wouldn't be there right now without the DS, 3DS, PSP, and Vita building the groundwork and a strong fanbase of JRPG gamers prior. And with the PS4 still being a strong brand for the genre, things look better. But all in all, this is why I don't think the genre has ever been in any danger.
