  • The best compliment I can give this lens requires a bit of behind-the-scenes knowledge: Most of the lenses in this series go up for sale shortly after I finish the videos. I don’t need a box full of lenses that I won’t use again as I focus on other lenses. Understanding that, this lens will remain in my kit for a long time. I like this lens a lot. It’s my go-to Pentax telephoto zoom. The light weight and relatively compact size make this an easy lens to carry in a camera case.
Quantaray did a great job in sourcing this lens. It performs well in many settings and, for those of you looking to get into portraits on a budget, it really shines as a portrait lens. This lens handles subjects, especially people, in a flattering manner.
Some reviewers have bemoaned this lens’ “slow” maximum aperture range, compared to f/2.8 lenses. But that sort of misses the point on this lens. The “slow” f/4 aperture, which is a staggering one stop slower than an f/2.8 lens, also drastically reduces the lens’ weight and size. As a general statement with exceptions, you’ll likely use this lens or an f/2.8 lens at around f/8. So what does the added stop of speed buy you except an emptier bank account and more carry weight?
This lens handles very well and takes stunningly sharp images in its ideal focus range. Wider than that range, it still performs very well and would be worth recommending.
The Quantaray 70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD is a film-era, nearly-vintage-now optic that, with some use care, holds up well on both full frame and APS-C digital sensors. As an affordable, light lens for wildlife and portraits, it’s awesome.
Like a mechanic who specializes in 1980s German diesel engines, this lens is a specialist. Sure it can do things outside it’s best range, much like that mechanic could likely fix a somewhat newer Dodge Ram with a Cummins, but that’s not really where they shine.

As a photographer who has way too much gear I can say that the rebranded Tamron lenses by Quantaray and Promaster are some of the best bargains out there on the used market today. I have at least 6 or 7 70-300mm Tamron rebranded lenses and they are great performers. Though it does not have a macro function the older Promaster 70-300mm based on the Tamron model 372D and 472D rival my Nikkor 70-300mm D and G lenses in terms of sharpness and color, I would have to say stay away from anything made by Sigma in the 90s or 00s.

Very well done analysis of this lens. I have the 62mm version in the Canon mount, and I achieved varying results, not understanding the reasons for the results I really liked, which I now see are all around 200-250. The fuzzyness at 300, I blamed on the autofocus, and bad technique on my part. Both of which might still be factors, but your review has removed a great deal of the vagueness with which I used it. The "taping" of the lens, fixing it at F8/200mm instantly resonated with me, and I realized that the shots I liked, were almost all in that range. Thank you, for saving me all the time it would have taken to eventually understand how best to use it. I bought mine, for a bargain, intrigued by the "macro" aspect. I also agree it's not a macro. My Canon 70-300, kills the Quanteray, at 300, or below 180. But in the sweetspot , the Quantaray seems slightly better.

Thank you and I agree. Having used that Canon lens, at this lens' ideal range, it's better.

I had a 24mm and a 70-300 marked Quantaray. The lens finally kept sending error codes to my Canon SL2 camera. I got a 24mm pancake and a Canon 75-300mm lens to replace them.

Yeah, Canon makes their cameras so that third-party lenses can't communicate with them. It's frustrating, to put it mildly.

I recently picked up a 18mm quantaray with a nikon AF mount. Can’t find much else over here (UK) is there an EU equivalent for this brand?

If it's vintage, I have a video on the sigma 18mm, which might be similar.

    Are these lens film only?

Nope. In fact, I think most of the shots in this video were taken on digital cameras.
