  • Thick ivy conceals a beautiful church ruin in Southwood Norfolk. Abandoned for 150 years and easily mistaken for a large tree, passersby would likely pass unaware of its existence. It’s bushy exterior completely covers the ruined tower, with the surrounding nave walls held up by the ivy and the elder. When Southwood became a joint parish with Limpenhoe in 1870 St Edmond’s church was abandoned, the thatched roof was removed and the remains are now slowly being reclaimed by nature. Southwood’s church bells have been relocated to nearby Limpenhoe church along with its famous door knocker. Legend tells the story of two men who tried to rescue a treasure chest from deep within nearby Callow Pit. The treasure trove lurked beneath the surface of the water said to be guarded by a fearsome spectre. Not to be deterred two local men placed ladders over the pit to enable them to cross and used large poles to grapple into the gloomy depths in an attempt to retrieve the sunken treasure. After much perseverance they hit a large object and hooked the pole onto an iron ring before hauling the lost treasure to the surface. Their triumph soon turned to torment as a strange mist surrounded them accompanied by the smell of death. Suddenly a giant black arm arose from the depths with claw like fingers to reclaim the treasure. The two men fled and the only reward for their efforts was the iron ring of the treasure chest still attached to the pole. The treasure itself was never seen again. Folklore tells this ring was affixed to the front door handle of Southwood Church as a reminder of their efforts. After St Edmonds abandonment in the late 1800s the ring was relocated to St Botolph’s Church in Limpenhoe. It is still there today on the north facing door. In medieval times north facing doors were often referred to as the Devil’s door. Folklore tells the area around Callow Pit is still patrolled by a headless horseman continuing to ensure the treasure is never recovered.
