  • Today we're having a look at why it can sometimes be helpful to not sit down to write music, but just to create sounds. With this more modest goal in mind your gonna be more likely to do more interesting experimentation in your sound design with the added benefit of improving your workflow the next time you actually sit down with the aim of creating music.

    days for sound design, days for making music, days for recording your music, days for practicing your instruments. and the occasional days for doing nothing too.

    Reminds me of ideas posted few years ago by Ill Gates, who talks about separating "night time sessions" from "day time sessions": it's not so much about when that happens (day vs. night), but about how much time / potential distraction you have in front of you.
    If you have only a couple of hours and risk being interrupted, then go for a sound design session - like we see in this video. In this kind of session, your only goal is to find and capture sounds that are interesting to you at that particular moment. You're not thinking about composition or even music theory - you're just trying to capture the moment "on tape".
    But when you have more time in front of you (four hours and beyond) AND don't risk being interrupted (typically when other people sleep or when you can turn off your smartphone and cutoff the internet without setting your social or day-job opportunities in jeopardy), then you can have a real music-making session: sequencing, mixing, arrangement. Your focus here is about generating / creating not sounds but songs - or whatever is the equivalent in electronic music :)
    It's a very simple and productive way to work. It's an important part of my workflow and I have Ill Gates to thank for that tip (never met the guy, but I have to thank his videos for inspiring me as Felix did here).

    I totally get the point of this separation, because I experience the sound design vs. Composition dilemma all the time... but still my problem with this approach is that you're sort of limited to a certain kind of crafted sounds, if you want to ensure the compatibility with any tempo & rhythmical structure. Any advice? ✌

    • @annother3350
      @annother3350 Před rokem +1

      Just keep tweaking and saving snapshots/presets. Only worry about the sound being interesing. Worry about anything else later and you may find you come up with something very different to your normal way of working

    • @i-never-look-at-replies-lol
      @i-never-look-at-replies-lol Před rokem +4

      that's the best part: you just don't care. you record your sounds and try to shoehorn them into something else later. fun things happen once you have to start manipulating audio to get it to fit into something and it gives it character that wouldn't otherwise be there

      @Ann Other Thats totally true aswell and I love the sampling thing an it's unexpected results a lot, but if you look at it that way it's not quite an alternative to crafting the sound you need, the moment you need it in composition...

    hey !! i really want to get one of the Nord drum series, but I don't know the difference between this nord drum 2 and the new nord 3p
    Isn't the nord 3p same machine but with extra pads to play on ?

    • @pdm67
      @pdm67 Před rokem

      3p has pads and effects, stereo outs and 6 note polyphony. 2 has four note polyphony and individual outs.

    • @ukbloke28
      @ukbloke28 Před měsícem

      @@pdm67 Not quite correct. The 2 also has 6 poly - I think it's the first ND you're thinking of.
      The 2 has extra synthesis options and does have some FX but lacks the reverb on the 3 (which a lot of people don't like). It doesnt have the built in pads but they can be added as a separate device.
      The 2 is widely regarded as the best not least because it's so compact considering how powerful it is. But I really like them both. Highly underrated.

    • @dynho_b
      @dynho_b Před rokem +1

      Depends on your workflow. If you like to spend your time in front of a computer monitor, use Ableton or any other daw. That’s the cheaper way to start anyway. But if you are like me who prefers to get his hands on hardware then go that way. Just keep in mind it will be way more expensive and you need more space to set up your gear.
      If you just want to try out what fits you better get for example Akai Beats for free. You only need a MIDI-keyboard/controller to get started. Speaking of MIDI-keyboards, most of them provide you a free Ableton Live Lite license, too.

    • @ThomannSynthesizers
      @ThomannSynthesizers  Před rokem

      Depends on what you aim for. Ableton + Push is gonna give you a much wider set of tools. Doing with hardware, what Ableton can do would cost you millions.
      However maybe you might be the kind of person thats more inspired by hardware and it‘s more tactile workflow. But to figure that out takes time and experimentation.
