In Spring 2019, the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists, led by John Eliot Gardiner, presented a tour of Handel’s dramatic oratorio, Semele. In a concert-staging directed by Thomas Guthrie, a glamorous team of young soloists joined the Monteverdi ensembles to bring the story of Semele to life.
This performance was filmed in London's Alexandra Palace Theatre on 2 May 2019.

This is the difference between beeing a singer and beeing an artist.
Fantastic vocal and physical delivery.
This is EXTREMELY interesting. An approach you'd expect to hear in Purcell but not Handel. Still, it somehow works and brings the music to life in a very unique way. I'm all for it.
Controversial? Sure. But personally I'm loving the sheer drama of Richardot's performance - just as much as I love her unique timbre.
I love this! Why not give this role a different approach? Her stage presence is exciting and has integrity. Her musicality and vocal technique breathtakingly beautiful. You go, girl! Make it your own.😍
Brava!!!!
Goddamn that G4 in full chest voice. Lucile is a 1000 horsepower truck. This is what happens when you let a contralto take on this role.
she calls herself a mezzo soprano tho ...but i agree i think she is a contralto too
Amazing!!!
This is beautiful!! I love Handel's Semele. Over Covid19 I have been introducing myself to new Handel oratorios and this is one of them; others being "Solomon", and "Belshazzar's Feast". I hope you don't mind me asking; Is there a full concert video somewhere, of this performance? I would love to see the whole thing! :-)
At least she has a great chest voice which is quite seldom nowadays

Sentiment much appreciated... but do you intend John Eliot Gardiner?
I do wonder (?) why a conductor of the 'stature' of JEG should have chosen a singer with so little tone and relying on breathy effects to sing this important part. Go to the ENO version and listen to Susan Bickley for a real account of this number.
I think it’s just fine and is very nice
Maybe he knows better than you do?
@@lalagonegaga Or maybe he and I just have different opinions.
