I feel this. I planted mine back in late April. I completely failed to remember how large pumpkin plants grow and I have really messed up. I planted two plants about 3 feet apart and it has completely taken up my garden. I beat the vines on each plant are almost 25' or more.

How much do you trim them back? Should the remaining vine(s) be of what length? My vines are 20’ long and growing a foot a day or more, monsters. I trimmed out 30% of the leaves as well but did not know how much of the vine should be left.

I have them growing out of a big container on my pool deck. One of the vines is looking real nice and green with the biggest leafs and the other aren’t far behind that. The bigger one has a lot of the flowers growing out of it while the others only have a few just starting, ( sorry don’t know the exact names for them). Was wondering if there’s any tips to help out because Weather here is only going to stay good for so long. Anything is appreciated
Several things that can be done here 1 you're only about three months into the pumpkins growing pumpkins bass in the variety can take 95 to 150 days. Secondly you want to continually fertilize the container the recommended rate on the back of the package to feed the plants since they are in a container. 3 go online and identify what male and female flowers look like the female will have a small fruit behind the flower the male flower will simply have a stalk with a flower on it. Try to find out how many female flowers are on the plant and then remove all but about three or four of them by cutting them this will give the energy to the flowers that are left however prior to doing that you want to hand-pollinate with the male flower to the female flower to ensure pollination then trim off the unpollinated flowers or even if they are pollinated remove them as a plant like a pumpkin can only successfully handle two maybe three pumpkins at best. It will abort the other pumpkins if left alone but this way you can allow more energy to be focused on what ones you want to grow.

Just fertilized the other day, and seems to be doing better. But now I'm scared my little pumpkins might dye. I just stuck the end of the vine back into the soil. Hoping it develops roots so the fruit will continue to grow. I have several blossoms on other vines, but wonder if they even turn into baby pumpkins, will they mature before the frost? I'm guessing 60 days or so isn't enough. so I need to see what I can do for the ones I got.
Sadly your small pumpkins will most likely not grow and because it was a major vine you may lose the plant. There are if on the ground feeder roots the attach to the ground to help the plant

They are that size, so they are likely close to being mature. They are a nice orange color, no signs of yellowing yet. Any suggestions at this point? I could just cut the fruit off the vine and bring indoors for my wife's fall decor. Any ideas how long the fruit will last indoors until showing signs of spoilage? I'm afraid if I leave outdoors and they have no way of taking in water, then they'll just die in the heat. I'm guessing since it took this plant so long to produce these two pumpkins, I likely have zero chance of anymore between now and frost in November. I have some new blossoms, so it appears the plant is recovering from earlier stress, but this now adds some uncertainty. We bought this on Memorial Day and only noticed the fruit within the last 2-3 weeks. They may have been growing longer but were hidden under some large leaves. Thanks.
This is my 1st year growing pumpkins. All the leaves have either dried out or developed the white powdery mildew on. I've looked up how to avoid this for future but this year the damage is already done. Pumpkins are growing fine but will the whole plant die now there are no healthy leaves left?
most likely yes if you are about to look up a recipe that you can spray on the plant to try to save some of the leaves and break up the mildew you could try that
I'm always nervous about trimming my pumpkins in case I invite microbes into the plant and risk it dying off. Thanks for showing it's not that delicate a plant.

Well pumpkin plants are edible and here in India we eat it as vegetable.In my CZcams channel the way to clean pumpkin plant is available,,,,which is necessary before cooking it as green vegetable soup or curry
Thank you for watching we pick our either when 90% of the pumpkin is ripened if that is orange white blue gray ect or the day before the frost/freeze is going to hit. the best place to store then is out of direct sunlight temp about 50 to 75% 50 to 55°F we stored one we harvested in oct on the floor or the kitchen till mid feb that when it started to go bad but we were able to save it and use it
Hello.. I have a question.. I read some articles in internet "Because they divert nutrients and energy from the main and secondary vines, it’s a good idea to trim tertiaries as soon as you see them. After you make a cut, bury the severed tip an inch or two deep in the soil and cover it with mulch." If there is a yellow leaves, when I cut the yellow leaves do I just let it off or should I cover it with something? as the cutted leaves will leave a hollow part on the stem/tip. Is it dangerous? like letting a disease entering the plant or something?

DO i need to take away the old dead plants for another grow season? Or i can leave them on, since there is no winter here. (2) what are good ways to do with the cut vines and leaves? I do not have space to do composting....
1 Yes you can let them just grow when the plant has got to the end of its life if will die. One growing season as they plants will only grow for up to 150 days then die. If there are not diseases on the plant you can live it where it is at you do want to ad fertilizer to the new are they will be planted next growing season. You can take the cut vine and leaves and just lay them on the soil as a much around the plant you cut them off of.

This article has some pretty good tips. www.almanac.com/pest/squash-vine-borer I, for one, swear by diatomaceous earth for just about anything involving pests. Mites and fleas on animals, ants in your house - I'm pretty sure it's good against spiders too. It's non-toxic as well. Me and my mom put it in our chickens' food every so often to keep the bugs out of it, and it helps to keep them from getting worms and other parasites. Just be mindful of the copious amounts of dust in the air. People who are sensitive to dust tend to hate me when I use it, LOL. Also, if you get trouble with squash bugs, try planting radishes near the pumpkins - I read somewhere that they hate radishes. If they don't avoid the pumpkins then hey, you still get radishes. If you hate radishes like everyone in my family... free compost?
I used to have TERRIBLE problems with the SVB. I gave up growing pumpkin last year because I didn’t want to deal with the constant battle. This year, however, I found a solution that WORKED. It’s called “Diatomaceous earth”. It’s basically finely ground up crustaceans from the ocean floor. You sprinkle the powder along the vine before and during peak SVB season in your area. This is entirely PREVENTATIVE. Once they’re already inside your vines, it can’t help. But I will swear by the stuff and will use it for years to come. It’s cheap and organic! The only downside is that it kills all bugs, including the good ones, such as bees. Just be sure to dodge the flowers and only get the main vine when sprinkling it on. Sorry I’m just now seeing your post, I’m probably too late for this year’s crop. Give it a go next year!
I was always told you should never cut leaves from the vine, as they provide more energy for the Pumpkin itself. AKA, long vines feeding one pumpkin makes a massive pumpkin. Cutting back a vine does not stop it from trying to produce more vine, and you're actually cutting off nutrient pull to your pumpkin... More vine = more nutrients. We always trim useless fruits, and cut the first female flower (allowing your vine to get thick before producing), and guide the vine into a spiral to keep them under control. A thick vine produces thick fruits. I don't doubt you produce good fruits.. However, give my method a try just once. I think you may be pleasantly surprised. Try 1 vine, planted in a fertilized dirt mound, 4 full steps from any other plants. Guide it into a spiral, and cut the first female flowers until your vine thickens up.
The reason for this is to stop the outward growth of the plants vines and to focus the energy of the plant to develop the punkins that are on the Vine to 3 tops based on your variety just like topping brussel sprouts 45 to 50 days before you want to have sprouts at amateur size you want to top the plant to stop vertical growth same thing with tomatoes too stressed the plant out to produce and mature the fruit that is currently being developed
@@davidhaney1394 Don't forget fire. Hammer the slug and the hit it with a huge flame, preferably with a WW II flamethrower if you have one of those laying around. Seriously this is my first year growing pumpkins and I am lost. This video helped me some. I was told to cut every other stalk with a big leaf on it from the main vine but that just seems excessive and I don't want to genocide the entire vine/plant If a tendril, or the skinny curly cue, pig tail looking thingamabob gets detached from the ground will it go back into the ground for water/moisture?

I've done literally everything wrong hah! I've cut leaves when they've had caterpillars, nipped things way too soon. I've got a handful growing at a medium size and one getting big. In south Mississippi, I've got another month before a hard freeze, if we get one at all. Right now it's like 68° and humid. I'm hoping to get at least one. I planted them really late because I didn't know better lol it's our first year of gardening and I thought they were a fall veggie. Ooops

There's just either no female buds. Or the buds Turn yellow before they have a chance to open & fall off or if I do happen to get a female open, I always hand pollinate and it might grow for a couple of days or not at all and then abort. or Sometimes get as big as a tennis ball and then split open.... Instead of vaguely explaining what you're doing. It would be good to recommend growers to cut out tertiary vines and all dead/old/burnt leaves. Thats all wasted energy, given you still have a healthy main vine with a growing pumpkin. And give the plant a healthy dose of potash.
This video is 5 year old and still helping give people the knowledge and confidence needed to cut back those vines. Atleast it has for me.

What part of florida are you in? I am in tampa amd my squash plant lasted through the winter and is still growing.

Whatering is best adding soil around the base will not hurt the plant it will help but also you dont want to invest to much for a pumpkin plant
It is normal for plants like pumpkins to drop fruit it kowns if can not support offent there is not anything that can be done

I mix a slightly heavier honey and cinnamon water together and put it where I cut. It helps keep this from this happening.

It will not grow more you will need to plant more seed. Yes 1 to 2 fruit is normal

I, for one, swear by diatomaceous earth for just about anything involving pests. Mites and fleas on animals, ants in your house - I'm pretty sure it's good against spiders too. It's non-toxic as well. Me and my mom put it in our chickens' food every so often to keep the bugs out of it, and it helps to keep them from getting worms and other parasites. Just be mindful of the copious amounts of dust in the air. People who are sensitive to dust tend to hate me when I use it, LOL.
Also, if you get trouble with squash bugs, try planting radishes near the pumpkins - I read somewhere that they hate radishes. If they don't avoid the pumpkins then hey, you still get radishes. If you hate radishes like everyone in my family... free compost?
I used to have TERRIBLE problems with the SVB. I gave up growing pumpkin last year because I didn’t want to deal with the constant battle. This year, however, I found a solution that WORKED. It’s called “Diatomaceous earth”. It’s basically finely ground up crustaceans from the ocean floor. You sprinkle the powder along the vine before and during peak SVB season in your area. This is entirely PREVENTATIVE. Once they’re already inside your vines, it can’t help. But I will swear by the stuff and will use it for years to come. It’s cheap and organic! The only downside is that it kills all bugs, including the good ones, such as bees. Just be sure to dodge the flowers and only get the main vine when sprinkling it on. Sorry I’m just now seeing your post, I’m probably too late for this year’s crop. Give it a go next year!
I was always told you should never cut leaves from the vine, as they provide more energy for the Pumpkin itself. AKA, long vines feeding one pumpkin makes a massive pumpkin. Cutting back a vine does not stop it from trying to produce more vine, and you're actually cutting off nutrient pull to your pumpkin... More vine = more nutrients. We always trim useless fruits, and cut the first female flower (allowing your vine to get thick before producing), and guide the vine into a spiral to keep them under control. A thick vine produces thick fruits. I don't doubt you produce good fruits.. However, give my method a try just once. I think you may be pleasantly surprised. Try 1 vine, planted in a fertilized dirt mound, 4 full steps from any other plants. Guide it into a spiral, and cut the first female flowers until your vine thickens up.
The reason for this is to stop the outward growth of the plants vines and to focus the energy of the plant to develop the punkins that are on the Vine to 3 tops based on your variety just like topping brussel sprouts 45 to 50 days before you want to have sprouts at amateur size you want to top the plant to stop vertical growth same thing with tomatoes too stressed the plant out to produce and mature the fruit that is currently being developed
hey bro. i have a lovely pumpkin plant but all the young ones fall off. it is pushing out some secondary shoots. Can it bear again?

Don't forget fire. Hammer the slug and the hit it with a huge flame, preferably with a WW II flamethrower if you have one of those laying around.
Seriously this is my first year growing pumpkins and I am lost. This video helped me some. I was told to cut every other stalk with a big leaf on it from the main vine but that just seems excessive and I don't want to genocide the entire vine/plant
If a tendril, or the skinny curly cue, pig tail looking thingamabob gets detached from the ground will it go back into the ground for water/moisture?

I normally eat pumpkin leaves but I do not know is all verities of pumpkin leave are safe, can’t find anything on the Internet about them either, just want to be safe before cooking them up.

Trevor Cole I read that all pumpkin leaves are edible ,... I have tried a couple and the the flowers too.
Pumpkin leaves are a staple diet in parts of Africa, in fact, if you live in the UK you can order pumpkin leaves, you cook them the same way as spinach and callaloo.

I've done literally everything wrong hah! I've cut leaves when they've had caterpillars, nipped things way too soon. I've got a handful growing at a medium size and one getting big. In south Mississippi, I've got another month before a hard freeze, if we get one at all. Right now it's like 68° and humid. I'm hoping to get at least one. I planted them really late because I didn't know better lol it's our first year of gardening and I thought they were a fall veggie. Ooops

Thank you for watching you cut the smaller fruit off the plant that will not get large in our area before the frost kills the plant so we remove the smaller fruit to allow the plant to put all its energy in to grow the large fruit before winter
remove the smaller fruit to get large ones to grow bettter

OOOOOOKKKKKKKKK GUYYYYYSSSSSSSS YOU GOTTTTTTTTTA TELL ME THE EXACT NAME OF THE COMPOST BAG😢😢😢😢 I'm sooo embarrassed to say in 5yrs of trying to grow pumpkins I've gotten maybe 3. There's just either no female buds. Or the buds Turn yellow before they have a chance to open & fall off or if I do happen to get a female open, I always hand pollinate and it might grow for a couple of days or not at all and then abort.
or Sometimes get as big as a tennis ball and then split open.... I'm telling you, I can't win for losing. And when I hear people say they had pumpkins come up. And they didn't even try, and they have pumpkins everywhere it just makes me sick.lololololol 😮😮😅😅😢😢😂❤❤

Instead of vaguely explaining what you're doing. It would be good to recommend growers to cut out tertiary vines and all dead/old/burnt leaves. Thats all wasted energy, given you still have a healthy main vine with a growing pumpkin. And give the plant a healthy dose of potash.
